Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 15, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Canada’s DHX Media acquires LA-based Wildbrain Entertainment (, producers of Yo Gabba Gabba!, which airs on Nick Jr. and HBO’s The Ricky Gervais Show, with an initial cash payment valued at about US$8 million.  The deal will be paid out with further consideration subject to the financial performance of Yo Gabba Gabba! over the next three years.  Under the deal, Michael Polis will continue to serve as President, Wildbrain Entertainment.  He will also now take on the role of EVP/Branded Entertainment & Consumer Products, DHX Media, heading DHX Media’s international licensing efforts.  Wildbrain also produces Disney Channel’s Higglytown Heroes, and the upcoming short-form series Bubble Guppies, an animated series for Nick Jr., and Team Smithereen, a short-form puppet show from Dan Clark.

Singapore’s August Media Holdings acquires Edinburgh-based kid’s content producer Red Kite Animation.  Under the new deal Red Kite Animation will operate as a subsidiary of august Media with founder Ken Anderson remaining as Creative Director.  Additionally, he will also become a member of August Media’s board and serve as Executive Director of August Media’s other business interests.  Established 10+ years ago, Red Kite has produced kid-targeted programming including The Secret World of Benjamin Bear, Dennis and Gnasher and The Imp, among others.


Writer/director Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) is in talks to direct the feature film adaptation of The Hunger Games, the first book in Suzanne Collins’ young adult science fiction trilogy, per Heat Vision.  There has been much discussion about who will direct the Lionsgate movie, with rumors that included Ron Howard, Sam Mendes, Rupert Sanders and David Slade.  Published by Scholastic, the other books in the trilogy are Catching Fire and Mockingjay.  Stay tuned …

Qubo Channel ( ) debut its 2010-2011 schedule, featuring new animated and live action series and includes some US premieres as well as returning series, from Monday, September 27 at 6a.  Then, Qubo will launch its Night Owl animation programming block at midnight on September 28, which includes the newly acquired animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, She-Ra Princess of power, Brave Star and Ghostbusters.  Additionally, Qubo Channel’s fall lineup will make its premiere on ION Television on Wednesday, October 6, and then on both NBC’s Saturday morning three-hour Qubo block and Telemundo beginning Saturday, October 9.

Qubo Channel  the new 2010 season includes the US premieres of series such as The Mysteries of Alfred Hedgehog and Pearlie, as well as new episodes of returning series including Willa’s Wild Life, Shelldon, and Turbo Dogs, and the broadcast return of The Magic School Bus.

Nickelodeon is encouraging kids to get up and get active as the network hosts its seventh annual Worldwide Day of Play (WWDP), part of the network’s The Big Help, on Saturday, September 25, 12-3p, during which its TV channels and websites will go off air/offline.  During the hours the network is on that air that day, Nickelodeon celebrities will host the network and share health and wellness messaging while also covering activities at the WWDP event in NY, the Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC RBC Race for the Kids.  Kids across the US and in 10 countries are expected to take part in the WWDP this year, with 3,000+ events set to take place worldwide.  Participating channels and their corresponding websites include Nickelodeon ( ), Nicktoons ( ), Nick Jr. ( ), and TeenNick ( ).  More information can be found at .

Teletoon (Canada) hosts the world premiere of its first original live-action movie, My Babysitter’s a Vampire, on Saturday, October 9 at 7p.  Targeted to K6-12, the movie is directed by Bruce McDonald (The Tracey Fragments, Queer as Folk, Degrassi: The Next Generation) and developed by Fresh TV, in association with Teletoon Canada.  The movie revolves around 14-year-old Ethan who wants nothing more than to shed his geeky image.  Those plans are thwarted when Ethan gets in trouble for not looking after his little sister (8) one night when their parents are out  and the punishment is that from now on he and his sister will need a babysitter.  Worse yet is the babysitter turns out to be a girl Ethan’s had a crush on forever, and she’s got her one issues … can you say vampire?  A 13-part TV series of the same name is currently in production and set to air on Teletoon on 2011.  My Babysitter’s a Vampire is produced with the participation of the Canada Media Fund, created by the government of Canada and the Canadian cable industry, and with the assistance of the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit and the Ontario Film and Television Tax Credit Program.

Winnie and Kevin together again!  Yep, Danica McKellar and Fred Savage, who played Winnie and Kevin on The Wonder Years, re-team on a new episode of Cartoon Network‘s Generator Rex.  McKellar will play groovy gal Claire Bowman who surprisingly ends up going to prom with Savage’s character (a regular on the series) Noah.  The episode will air on Friday, September 24 at 8:30p on Cartoon Network.

4Kids Entertainment acquires the worldwide theatrical, TV and home entertainment distribution rights (excluding Asia) for Yu-Gi-Oh! 3D: Bonds Beyond Time, a new 3D animated film.  Bonds Beyond Time marks the 10th anniversary of the Yu-Gi-Oh! animated series, created by Kazuki Takahashi.  4Kids will be offering the film next month at Mipcom 2010.  Set for a 3D movie theater release in early 2011 in select markets, Bonds Beyond Time will then bow on TV and release on DVD.  Yu-Gi-Oh! 3D: Bonds Beyond Time made its initial debut in Japan in a well received limited weekend run at 124 3D theaters in January 2010, earning $3+ million.

The animated action/comedy Kung Fu Dino Posse (40×30) is set to make its UK debut on CITV this fall.  Created by writer/producer Peter M. Lenkov (CSI: NY, Hawaii Five-O, 24), Kung Fu Dino Posse is a co-production between Sunwoo Korea (Republic of Korea), Optix Entertainment (Germany), Cookie Jar Entertainment (Canada), and Sunwoo Singapore (Singapore).  The series revolves around four recently defrosted dinosaurs from the ice age that wind up living in a modern city.  The four heroes meet up with their previous nemesis Skor and his not so bright brother, also living in the same city, where the prehistoric battle between good and evil begins anew.

This week marks Disney Online’s launch of two new original web series featuring The Muppets and celebrity chef Cat Cora.  Targeted to families is the web series The Muppets Kitchen with Cat Cora on (, while Hasty Tasty Cooking Tips with Cat Cora and the Muppets on Disney ( is aimed specifically at mom and providing them with recipes and tips.  Both Muppets Kitchen and Hasty Tasty are both exclusively sponsored by the new Honda Odyssey and the National Milk Mustache “got milk?” campaign.  Muppet characters helping Cora out in the kitchen include quirky chef Angelo, who creates a bit of chaos in his wake, as well as favorites including Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and Gonzo.


Sesame Workshop and indie music and video distributor The Orchard ( partner to make Sesame Street’s catalogue of music available to fans around the world via multiple platforms.  Sesame Street’s catalogue includes songs by celebrities including Steve Wonder, R.E.M., Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Gloria Estefan and Celine Dion, to name a few, as well as classic songs from the series, such as Cookie Monster’s “C is for Cookie”, Ernie singing “Rubber Duckie,” and “People In Your Neighborhood,” and “Ma Na Mah Na.”  Additionally, Orchard clients will offer up remixes of Sesame Street songs, starting with DJ/producer RJD2, and creator of the Mad Men theme music.  The Orchard’s services include digital and mobile distribution, digital marketing, song placement and synchronization, royalty collections, mechanical administration.

DQ Entertainment (DQE) finalizes an exclusive five-year home video distribution pact for its 3D animated series with Thailand-based TIGA Entertainment.  Under the deal, TIGA takes the home video rights for first season of DQE’S new 3D CGI Iron Man  Armored Adventures in English and Thai for release in Thailand.

Walt Disney Records will release Phineas and Ferb: Holiday Favorites, an album that features humorous versions of holiday songs, simultaneously in stores and digitally September 21. The release includes all the song from last year’s digital-EP release Christmas Vacation as well as 10 all new songs.  The album will be supported with five new music videos and Phineas and Ferb Christmas Vacation holiday special that will run on Disney XD, Disney Channel, ABC Family and ABC TV.


Nickelodeon‘s premiere of a new episode of iCarly, iSam’s Mom featuring guest star Jane Lynch as Sam’s previously un-seen kooky mom, on Saturday, September 11 at 8p, was the top basic cable entertainment telecast of the evening with Total Viewers 2+ (5.9 million).  The premiere of iSam’s Mom was also tops on broadcast and basic cable TV for the week among K2-11 (2.7 million), K6-11 (2.2 million) and Tweens 9-14 (2.1 million).
