Network stars Raini Rodriguez and Calum Worthy are hosting Disney Channel’s “Monstober” month-long Halloween celebration that includes the season three premiere of Jessie, premiere of new series Wolfblood, new Gravity Falls short-form series Dipper’s Guide to the Unexplained and a special one-hour episode of Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man, guest starring Ross Lynch. A.N.T. Farm, Dog With a Blog, Good Luck Charlie, Liv and Maddie, Phineas and Ferb, Shake It Up, and Wander Over Yonder will feature all-new bone-chilling episodes. The month winds down with a marathon of fan-favorite Halloween movies including Girl Vs. Halloween Bash

The network that delivers “safe-scary” programming year-round will unleash its inaugural Halloween Bash, a two-hour, Kenan Thompson-hosted special featuring musical performances including Cody Simpson, a gaggle of celebrity presenters and a 50-state costume contest judged by a celebrity panel including Martha Stewart. During the month Hub will also present a variety of family-favorite, Halloween-themed movies and episodes, including: The Dog Who Saved Halloween, one-hour special Tiny Toon Adventures: Night Ghoulery, The Haunted Pumpkin of Sleepy Hollow, The Witches, and back-to-back episodes of Goosebumps, including the classic Halloween episode, “The Haunted Mask.”

  • Sabrina Secrets of a Teenage Witch – New animated series starring Ashley Tisdale premiered Oct. 12 and features the iconic teen character re-imagined for a new generation. The series is produced by Moonscoop, Archie Comic Publications, DSK Group India, Laughing Lion and Telegael Teoranta.
  • R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour: The Series – The 2013 Daytime Emmy winner returned Oct. 12 with new tales of suspense inspired by master spooky story-teller Stine. Upcoming this Saturday, 7:30p ET/4:30 PT is the “Detention” ep, in which strange things and people start appearing out of nowhere.
  • Spooksville – premieres Oct. 26, 10p ET/7p PT. A new kid in town discovers that he holds the key to a battle between good and evil. The series, produced by Springville Productions, Front Street Productions and Jane Startz Productions, premieres after the Halloween Bash and will air weekly on Saturdays at 6:30p ET/3:30 PT starting Nov. 2. A special Halloween episode will air Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7:30p ET/4:30p PT.

*NICKELODEON
Classic Halloween eps from iCarly, Big Time Rush, Victorious, SpongeBob SquarePants, Power Rangers Megaforce, Kung Fu Panda and Penguins of Madagascar, will be available for viewing all month long on the Nick website. Here’s a smattering of what’s on TV…

  • Deadtime Stories – New series airs Thursdays at 8 and 8:30p, and is featuring extra-spooky episodes all month, including tomorrow’s “Terror in Tiny Town” and “Revenge of the Goblins,” and the Oct. 31 episode “Little Magic Shop of Horrors.”
  • The Fairly OddParents “Scary GodCouple” – Saturday, Oct. 19, 9:30a. Half-hour special finds mayhem ensuing after Foop becoming Vicky’s anti-fairy godparent.
  • Sanjay and Craig “Blackout/ Family Re-Noodman” – Saturday, Oct. 19, 10:30a. When the lights go out, Sanjay becomes the most powerful kid in town. During “Family Re-Noodman,” the boys infiltrate Noodman’s reunion in hopes of tasting special Frycade wings.
  • Power Rangers Megaforce “Halloween” – Saturday, Oct. 19, 1p. On Halloween, the Rangers have a strange encounter with a mysterious cloaked Medium who conjures “visions” of monsters past.
  • Sam & Cat “#DollSitting” – Saturday, Oct. 19, 8p. On Halloween, Sam and Cat are hired to babysit a doll, with creepy results.
  • The Haunted Hathaways “Haunted Halloween” – Saturday, Oct. 19, 8:30p. When Ray and Miles agree to help Taylor with her first Halloween party in the Hathaway/Preston house, things go awry.
  • PAW Patrol “Pups and the Ghost Pirate” – Wednesday, Oct. 23, 12p. The pups are going trick or treating, but when a decorative ship mysteriously starts to head out to sea captained by a “ghost,” the Patrol must save the day.
  • AwesomenessTV – Monday, Oct. 28, 7:30p. The Halloween episode of Nick’s new sketch comedy series is hosted by Cody Simpson and features pranks and music parodies.

*TEENNICK
TeenNick is rebooting its classic “Nick or Treat” as “Nick or Tweet” promos with Halloween episodes of ’90s classics Hey Arnold, Rugrats and more this month and a “tweet the secret word” giveaway of a ’90s prize pack. 

*NICKTOONS
The net’s HALLOWHAAAAT! promo includes new eps of Wild Grinders on Monday, Oct. 28, leading up to a marathon of episodes on Halloween day.

*SPROUT
Sprout’s Halloween celebration includes a promotion where parents can send video of kids marching in place decked out in their Halloween costumes through the Send to Sprout app, where a user-generated parade will be created. The network also has online treats including the Tricks, Clicks and Treats promo. Here’s what’s on TV…

  • Room on the Broom – Wednesday, Oct. 30, 6p. The U.S. premiere of the movie, based on the children’s book about the adventures of a witch and her cat.
  • The Sunny Side Up Show Halloween theme week Oct. 28-Nov. 1. The Sunshine Barn will have a special Halloween theme all week long.
  • Chica Show Halloween Episode – Thursday, Oct. 31. Chica’s indecision over her costume choice stops her from enjoying all the fun.

Saban is in the spirit: Power Rangers Megaforce is celebrating the season with a Halloween safety video, which can be seen across multiple kids’ platforms. There’s also a Power Rangers Weekend at the Nickelodeon Suites Resort in Orlando October 18-20, featuring a screening of the Halloween special Raising Spirits before it airs on Nickelodeon. Additionally, the Power Rangers have joined forces with Spirit Halloween for a second annual Power Rangers “Spirit of Children Week,” in which the Power Rangers Megaforce will visit 16 hospitals across the country to entertain young patients.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

One of CynKids favorite kids entertainers, Justin Roberts, will stop by Sprout’s Sunnyside Up Show on Oct. 31. The Halloween gig will feature Roberts singing the song “Trick or Treat,” from his Grammy-nominated album Jungle Gym, and “The Princess Wore Pink” from his new, ninth album, Recess.

Hop to it. Nickelodeon greenlighted a second season of preschool series Peter Rabbit, co-produced with Silvergate Media and animated by Brown Bag Films. Launched on Nick in December 2012, the series is based on the Beatrix Potter characters and reached 6.3 million preschoolers in third quarter 2013.

The CW will air the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball concert from NY as a two-hour special, featuring Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, among other performers, on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 8p.

PRODUCTION NOTES

Iconic British animated series Clangers is making a comeback. After 45 years, CBeebies, Coolabi, Smallfilms and Sprout are joining hands to produce the show, which will make its U.S. debut on Sprout in 2015. Previously launched on the BBC in 1969, Clangers is an environmentally aware show that features loveable mouse-shaped creatures that inhabit a planet not far from Earth. Stop-motion company Factory Transmedia will add some cool modern effects.

BRB Internacional and Maya Studio are launching HighSkull, a new animated series based on the popular characters from the brand Calaveritas, created by Javi Molner. Production of the series will be the responsibility of Screen 21, BRB’s creative studio.

Not just for kids… Syfy has greenlit Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge, a competition from The Jim Henson Company featuring contestants vying for $100,000 to build the best fantastical creatures.

MORE KIDS NEWS

Who better than Warren Buffet to introduce young entrepreneurs to the world of finance? The investing guru’s popular TV series Secret Millionaires Club continues to expand with the launch of Business-in-a-Box, a new interactive kids kit from A Squared Entertainment available exclusively at Toys R Us. The kit includes toys, activities and a DVD.

Live shows continue to gain momentum for key kids brands. AG Properties, together with MediaLink and JLB Licensing, have inked several recent deals that will bring Strawberry Shortcake to a series of live shows, special events and mall tours across Southeast Asia, Southeastern Europe and the Middle East. New partners include PT Dufia, Pen2Stag and TNL Organizasyon Hizmetleri.

DIGITAL UPDATE

Bill Nye’s scientific education universe continues to expand. His new series Why With Nye for YouTube channel THNKR revolves around Juno, which is NASA’s mission to Jupiter. The eight episodes are all available on THNKR’s channel… In other YouTube youth-oriented news, its online style guide channel Look TV is dedicating this week to DIY Halloween-themed content. The programming will include costume ideas like Katy Perry’s ‘Roar’ look or Harry Styles from One Direction. The videos will be featured on Look TV’s YouTube channel.

Alloy Digital and Break Media are creating an online video network, Defy Media, to serve up content to the young adult market, 12-34.The combination of the multichannel network and media company will reach 125 million people on YouTube alone with brands like Smosh and MadeMen.

Disney is making it possible to feel an object on a touchscreen with its technology, Tactile Rendering of 3D Features. Small electronic pulses are sent out that trick fingers into perceiving bumps and texture on an otherwise flat surface. The research is being presented at the ACM symposium this week in St. Andrews, Scotland. If it works, it could be revolutionize applications including mobile shopping.

GAMES & APPS

PlaySquare is releasing a new platform and appisodes for the iPad in its “touchable television” format. A new interactive adaptation of PBS Kids series WordWorld, produced in collaboration with partner Curious Pictures, will be available this week with additional apps, including a new holiday appisode, released monthly.

Oceanhouse Media is releasing “Trick or Treat – Little Critter,” available in the app store. The company also last week launched the next book app from the Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library series, “Clam-I-Am!: All About the Beach.”

It’s a brave new book fair world. The Scholastic Book Fair App is debuting to help parents and teachers find the right book for their child. The app contains 4,000-titles in its library and loads of information including reading levels, age range, videos, summary and “similar titles,” plus free podcasts and author interview videos.

LICENSING NEWS

Silvergate Media renewed Fisher-Price as Master Toy partner for its undersea preschool adventure property Octonauts. During the successful first term, Octonauts toys graced territories including the U.K., France, Germany and Australia, with the U.S. joining with the exclusive March launch at Toys R Us.

Joy Tashjian Marketing Group won the bid for licensing agency by Wild Grinders and Home Plate Entertainment to rep their animated series Rob Dyrdek’s Wild Grinders, which will debut its full second season on Nicktoons in 2014.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products EMEA and DC Entertainment are developing a new brand that links Sanrio’s Hello Kitty and DC Comics superheroes. Products targeting girls, women and collectors will launch in 2014 with heroic Hello Kitty appearing on apparel, accessories and footwear, stationery, publishing, personal care, promotional products and food products.

A trio of new licensing deals for Garfield: Bulls Licensing will rep the property in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and UAE, 20too will act on behalf of Garfield, and in Latin America P&L Global Network will serve as licensing agent.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe awarded Barcelona-based IMC Toys the Global Master Toy license for its video game franchise and upcoming TV series Invizimals. Augmented Reality, which is a key feature of the video games and the upcoming Invizimals series, will be integrated into the new range to bring the toys to life.

Vodka’s kids series Bugsted is in a new partnership with Simba Toys for toy lines in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

CBeebies has signed a seven-year broadcast deal for DHX Media’s In the Night Garden, ensuring the series will be on air in the U.K. through 2020.

PGS Entertainment signed an exclusive first-look deal with Zagtoon. First project under the new partnership is global distribution of live-action/animated hybrid series Ghostforce.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Saban Brands is expanding its European operations with the appointment of Gustavo Antonioni as Managing Director of Consumer Products Europe and the opening of a new London office. The international expansion is the first for the LA-based company. Antonioni previously held senior positions at companies including ITV, Warner Bros. and Sony.

AG Properties is promoting Carla Silva to SVP, Global Licensing. Silva previously was VP, Global Licensing.

Melina Gerosa Bellows has been promoted to publisher of National Geographic Books, adding responsibility for sales, marketing and distribution to her current role as National Geographic’s chief creative officer for Books, Kids and Family.

To help bridge the gap in literacy rates between children of high- and low-income families, Sesame Workshop is partnering with nonprofit organization the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation on the new digital destination Every Day is a Reading and Writing Day. The site features video segments that model ways for parents to easily engage their children in activities around vocabulary, reading and writing; plus, materials to use to plan fun literacy-based activities for kids.
