Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 10, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Hasbro Studios, Hasbro’s production and distribution division, and Canadian broadcaster Corus Entertainment enter into programming and marketing partnership.  The deal includes Hasbro Studios-produced animated and live-action series to air on Corus Entertainment’s kid-targeted Services, including YTV, Treehouse, Nickelodeon (Canada), and Canada’s Corus and Astral’s co-owned Teletoon and Teletoon Retro.  Hasbro Studios-produced series that are planned to head to Canada include Transformers Prime, My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, G.I. Joe Renegades, The Adventures of Chuck and Friends and pound Puppies.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Disney is in discussions to acquire Tiki, a family-targeted script from Ahmet Zappa and Michael Wilson, per THR.  While when the Polynesian mythology-themed Tiki family adventure first surfaced it was assumed that it was based on the Disneyland’s Enchanted Tiki Room attraction, but that is apparently not the case though THR says the writing duo may have been inspired by the attraction.  Zappa’s Monsterfoot Productions will produce the movie in partnership with Scott Sanders Productions.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Fox acquires the distribution rights for the US and major international territories to the mixed CGI and live-action 3D family-targeted feature film Walking with Dinosaurs at AFM, per Coming Soon.  Produced by Reliance Big Pictures, Evergreen Films and BBC Earth, Walking with Dinosaurs feature film is co-directed by Neil Nightengale and Pierre De Lespinois and penned by John Collee (Happy Feet).  In addition to US distribution rights, Fox picked up rights for international markets, including the U.K., France, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Italy, and Latin America among others.  During the market Reliance subsidiary IM Global has also inked distribution deals for the movie with Constantin (Germany), Alliance (Canada), Aurum (Spain) and Dutch Filmworks (Benelux).  The movie is based on the six-part TV series Walking with Dinosaurs, which debuted on the BBC in 1999, which was followed by a 2007 live arena show tour.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Paramount Home Entertainment will mark Paramount and Nickelodeon Movies‘ Blu-ray/DVD release of The Last Airbender, on November 16, 2010, by partnering with the American Taekwondo Association (ATA) for a series of nationwide events.  The ATA and its affiliates, which have 1,500+ licensed schools, will be able to participate in the movie themed parties.  Noah Ringer, who played Aang in the movie and who is proficient in martial arts, will take part in a special streaming video event during which ATA students at select school can interact with him via Ustream.  For more information about the event go to www.ustream.tv/lastairbender .  Additionally, the ATA will post the event at www.ataondemand.com, and viewers can connect via www.facebook.com/paramounthomeent .

Lego Systems, the North American division of Lego, launches its first official Lego-branded app for iPad/iPhone/iPad, which is free.  The new app is based on Lego’s board game Creationary, which tests how quickly players can guess what is being built with bricks.  Info about Lego Games can be found at http://games.lego.com .

Disney‘s kid/family-targeted Imagination Movers launch their In a Big Warehouse concert tour on February 4, 2011 in Lafayette, Louisiana, the group’s home state, and then make its way across the country.  More information about the tour can be found at www.imaginationmovers.com .  The group is currently filming the third season of their Imagination Movers series, as well as a concert special, which will air on Disney Channel’s Playhouse Disney block.  This February the Playhouse Disney block will be rebranded as Disney Junior.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Marvel Television builds its animation team by appointing Eric Radomski as SVP/Production and Creative Director/Animation and Tracy McAndrew as VP/Programming & Distribution Strategy.  At the same time Cort Lane is upped to VP/Development & Production, Marvel Animation.  All three will report to Jeph Loeb, EVP/Head, Marvel Television.  Lane, who had been Director/Development, Marvel, will oversee development of all animated series and direct-to-video movies for the division.  Lane was previously with Mattel where he produced programming and interactive projects across its brands.  McAndrew will be responsible for developing and global distribution objectives and strategies for the division, including marketing, program planning, and Marvel’s relationships with broadcasters, distribution partners, and key licensees.  Most recently, she served as Disney Channels Worldwide’s Director/Acquisitions & Co-Productions in Worldwide Programming Strategy Group.  Radomski is responsible for all aspects of Marvel’s animation productions.  He is well known for his work on the comic based titles Batman the Animated Series and Spawn, among other projects, including the new preschool series Iconicles, which is currently in production at his production company, phuuz entertainment.

Karina Graversen, Head of Sales, Nordic region is set to exit Kidz Entertainment/EEMC on November 30.  The company has named Soren Buhl to take over as Head of Sales Nordic, following Graversen’s departure.  Graversen was with Kidz Entertainment for six years, serving first as Brand Manager and eventually as Head of Sales, Nordic.

Zula International appoints Dana Garies as VP/Educational Sales.  A veteran of the education market, Garies is responsible for building and managing the Zula’s national sales team and key channel distributors, as well as for growing its revenue through its Pre-K and early elementary science content.  Garies most recently served as Regional VP, Award Publishing Company (f/k/a Sunshine Books).  Prior to that she was Western District Manager, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Company.  Zula is the creator the science-based animated series The Zula Patrol, among other properties.
