Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 4, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

Gorilla Nation Media, a division of Evolve Media, launches Youthology, a new kid/tween/teen-centric vertical media services business.  Youthology will specifically assist advertisers in reaching and connecting with the youth market.  SodaHead (www.sodahead.com ) has tapped Youthology to exclusively represent its online advertising inventor.  Other recent clients signing on with Youthology include Hit Entertainment for its properties.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Two more join the cast of the movie adaptation of Suzanne Collins young adult novel, The Hunger Games.  Cast as the boy/girl tributes from District 7 are Sam Ly and Leigha Hancock.  If you haven’t read the book(s) yet … a) you should and b) not all the tributes have names.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The Hub honors moms with a Mom-a-thon featuring Mrs. C, Marion Ross of Happy Days, this Sunday, May 8, 2001, Mother’s Day in many countries.  The evening will include six back-to-back episodes of Happy Days featuring Mrs. C, 9p-12a.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Coolabi names Golden Bear as the mater toy partner for its Poppy Cat property.  Set to launch in fall 2012, a new Poppy Cat toy line for the UK and Ireland will include plush, plastics, and arts and crafts products.  The animated Poppy Cat (52×11) preschool series makes its debut this week on Nick Jr in the UK, with recent TV deals including Sprout (US), as well as broadcasters in Australia, Canada, Korea, Poland, and the Middle East.  Based on the Poppy Cat character created by Lara Jones in the Macmillan books, the animated series is co-produced by Coolabi Productions, the TV production arm of Coolabi, and King Rollo Films.

2K Play, Nickelodeon and Major League Baseball Properties team up to introduce Nicktoons MLB for Xbox 360 (with support for Kinect), Wii, and Nintendo DS this summer.  The new game features Nicktoons animated characters going up against players from all 30 MLB teams in baseball games.  The summer debut of Nicktoons MLB will be supported with social media and special events at MLB ballparks.  The game is in development at High Voltage Software for consoles and Black Lantern Studios for Nintendo DS.

Amtrak and Ludorum partner to include Chuggington as part of Amtrak’s 40th anniversary nationwide tour, which kicks off this Saturday, May 7 at the National Tran Day event at Washington union Square in Washington DC.  Under the deal, a Chuggington play area for preschoolers/kids, Chuggington Depot, will be featured at select stops on Amtrak’s 40th anniversary Exhibit Train tour that will run through spring 2012.  Chuggington, a CGI animated series, airs daily on Disney Channel’s Disney Junior programming block.  More information about the Exhibit Tour and Chuggington Depot can be found at www.amtrak40th.com .

American Girl, a subsidiary of Mattel, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, and during its first quarter century reports having sold 20+ million dolls and 135 million books to date.  To mark this milestone anniversary year, American Girl is launching a cruise for fans (which has already sold out, in three days), special in-store events, and limited-edition merchandise.  Anniversary products and activities for 2011 include:

  • Collectible Mini Dolls – the line will continue to debut a limited edition historical mini doll each month throughout 2011.
  • Deluxe-Edition Historical DVDs – American Girl movie DVD re-releases including special features.
  • In-Store Celebration Events – fans can visit American Girl stores where special birthday festivities featuring popular characters, crafts, activities and other events will be available.
  • Share Your American Girl Memories – beginning this week, fans can share their favorite American Girl moments/stories – about their dolls, books, and in-store experiences at

  • 25th Birthday Cruise – the American Girl-themed vacation cruise sets sail from Miami on November 19, 2011 on the Celebrity Eclipse via Celebrity Cruises.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

BBC Worldwide appoints Jacek Koskowski as GM/CEE, BBC Worldwide Channels.  Koskowski is the first to hold the role of GM, CEE for the EMEA business, which is a first step in BBC Worldwide Channels’ long-term strategy to set up a local office in the region.  Based in Warsaw, Koskowski will oversee daily management of BBC Worldwide’s channels operations and head up distribution for its portfolio of six BBC channels in the market.  He will report to Ian McDonough, SVP and GM/BBC Worldwide Channels EMEA.  For a transitional period, Koskowski will work alongside Program Sp z.o.o to manage relationships with current partners and seek new distribution opportunities for the BBC channels until in-house support is established.  Most recently, Koskowski was Director/Thematic Channels, TV Polsat SA (Poland), responsible for the distribution and marketing of Polsat’s channel portfolio and the introduction of its new thematic channels into Poland.  A former TV host and news editor for Radio Zet and NTW, he previously toiled for Zone Vision (now Chello), and later co-founded Program Sp. z.o.o.

Turner CN Enterprises (TCNE) names Dorota Pawlowska as the new Territory Manager, Central Eastern Europe (excluding Russia and CIS).  Based in Warsaw, Pawlowska will be part of the team charged with growing TCNE consumer products business in the emerging markets.  She will work closely with the channel team in the region and the European Licensing Company (ELC), TCNE’s licensing agent in Central Eastern Europe. Pawlowska will also manage strategic brand development and maximize commercial opportunities for properties, including Ben 10, Bakugan and Generator Rex.

Imperial Toy names Genna Rosenberg as EVP/Strategic Marketing, Communications and Business Development.  Rosenberg joins Imperial from Jakks Pacific, where she spent 11 years most recently as SVP/Communications, Investor Relations and Philanthropy.  Prior to that Rosenberg was with Sharpe PR & Marketing, and also ran her own firm GennaRation Public Relations and Marketing, where she represented a range of toy, consumer and entertainment companies.

THQ names public relations veteran executive Angela Emery, as VP/Corporate Communications.  She will report to President and CEO, Brian Farrell.  Emery joins THQ following eight years with Disney Interactive Studios, where she served as VP/Global Communications for the interactive division.  She has previously toiled for Fox Interactive, Saga of America, and managed PR strategies for Microsoft Game Studios while with Edelman Public Relations Worldwide.  Additionally, Julie MacMedan, VP/Investor Relations and Corporate Communications is exiting THQ to pursue a new opportunity.  THQ is searching for someone to take over the PR investor relations responsibilities.
