Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 26, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

DreamWorks Animation confirms that Gary Oldman, Michelle Yeoh, Jean Claude Van Damme and Victor Garber will lend their voices to its upcoming animated sequel, Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom, and the new release date of Memorial Day, May 27, 2011.  The movie had originally been set to release a week later on June 3, 2011.  The movie already stars Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross and James Hong.  Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom is directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson and produced by Melissa Cobb.  Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger, who wrote and co-produced the original film (2008), also return.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Dominic Cooper (An Education, The Duchess) will play a young version of Howard Stark (Tony Stark’s, aka Iron Man, dad) in Joe Johnston’s upcoming feature film The First Avenger: Captain America, per Salon.com.  Directed by Joe Johnston, the movie is set for release July 22, 2011.  The cast already includes Chris Evans (he’ll play Steve Rogers/Captain America), Hugo Weaving, Sebastian Stan, Haley Atwell and Toby Jones.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Brazil’s TV Globo and Paramount Pictures renew their TV deal to air feature films distributed by Paramount for an additional six years.  Under the deal Rede Globo exclusive rights for Brazilian broadcast TV for movies released between 2010-15.  For 2010 Rede Globo will broadcast Paramount releases including kid/tween/teen and family targeted titles such as The Last Airbender, and DreamWorks Animations’ Shrek Forever After, How To Train Your Dragon, and Marvel’s Iron Man 2.

4Kids Entertainment completes new distribution deals for the most recent version of its animated series Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s.  RTL2 (Germany) and Mediaset (Italy) acquire all 90 episodes of the new Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s: Road to Destiny series.  Additionally, Televix Entertainment picks up the series for distribution in Latin America.  Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s returns to TheCW4Kids Saturday morning block on The CW on May 29th, and continues to air daily on Cartoon Network.  Additionally, the series is also available on VOD via the Comcast, Cox and Bresnan cable systems.

Kids fans can help the most famous meddling kids (and dog) in Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment‘s new action/adventure video game Scooby-Doo! And the Spooky Swamp.  Set for release this fall 2010, in conjunction with the new animated movie Scooby-Doo! Camp Scare, the game will be available for Wii, Nintendo DS and PlayStation 2.  Developed by Torus Games, Scooby-Doo! And the Spooky Swamp, invites kids to play as any of the Mystery, Inc. characters (including Scooby) in the game, and make their way through hidden clues and secret investigations, new brain teasers and fending off enemies, all the while collecting Scooby Snacks to buy character accessories and clothing.  Additionally, each package of the game will include a special Zoinks Points code, redeemable at ZoinksPoints.com ( www.zoinkspoints.com ).

MARKETING/LICENSING

Kids Can Press ( www.kidscanpress.com ), a publishing arm of Corus Entertainment, and Parmalat Canada team up for Black Diamond Funcheez, a new in-pack promotion featuring the first of three sets of three limited edition Franklin The Turtle mini books (total of nine titles) in grocery stores in Canada beginning this summer.  The first mini book in the series, Franklin at School, will be available from Tuesday, June 1, followed later this summer by the other two titles Franklin at Home and Franklin at Play.  Under the agreement the second set of three mini book titles will begin releasing in October, followed by the third set from February 2011.  Franklin celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2011.  The promotion will be supported on air and will also be featured online at www.funcheez.ca , which will offer downloadable bilingual activity sheets featuring Franklin and his pals.

Atlantyca Entertainment inks new translation deals in China, where it recently opened an office, for several of Italian publisher Mondadori‘s kid-targeted books.  Atlantyca serves as Mondadori’s literary agent in China.

  • People’s Literature Publishing House (publisher of the Harry Potter in China), picks up the translation rights for Mainland China for three books by noted kid’s author Bianca Pitzorno, A Special Summer with Violante, Princess Laurentina and King Midas Has Donkey Ears.
  • Qingdao Publishing House secures translation rights to four of Pizorno’s bestselling books, Diana, Cupid and the Commander, Listen to My Heart, Tornatras and The Secret Voice.
  • Tianjin Chinese-World Books takes rights to Licia Troisi’s three-book series Cronache del Mondo Emerso/Chronicles of the Overworld. Film rights have recently been sold to an Italian producer.

Kidz Bop enters into a license deal with confectioner Nairn Entertainment to introduce Kidz Bop-themed PodPops lollipops this summer.  Each lollipop will contain a Kidz Bop “Mini Mag” activity booklet and a code that allows kids to download a free Kidz Bop song when they log onto the PodPops landing page at KidzBop.com/PodPops ( www.kidzbop.com/podpops ).  Kids will be able to choose from 12 different songs, which will be updated regularly, including tracks from the upcoming Kidz Bop 18 CD (releasing July 27).

Chapman Entertainment partners with Memory4Teachers in a new five-year deal to help provide educational content for preschoolers in the UK.  Memory4Teachers is a national campaign that distributes 750,000+ memory drives to teachers that register across the UK.  The password secure USB drives are pre-loaded with an interactive control panel, various educational resources and software applications to assist in their work with young kids, including a diary, timetable and lesson plans.  Under the new deal, additional educational content will include Fifi and the Flowertots and Roary the Racing Car activity materials and learning tools.  The deal will also see content based on all of Chapman’s shows including Little Charley Bear and Rah Rah The Noisy Lion.  Teachers can register for a free USB at www.memory4teachers.co.uk/register.asp .

LeapFrog Enterprises launches its kid 4-9 aimed, education-centric online LeapWorld ( www.leapfrog.com/leapworld), for use with its Leapster2 (no additional cost for Leapster2 owners) via the LeapFrog Connect Application.  Kids can earn LeapWorld tokens on the handheld handset and then use them to create a character, build a home and customize both.  Additionally, exclusive online games/activities adapt, allowing kids to unlock math and literacy learning activities at their specific skill levels.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Jeff Junge is appointed SVP/Online Games and Digital Games Platforms, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.  He will report dually to Martin Tremblay President/Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Thomas Gewecke, President/Warner Bros. Digital Distribution.  Charged with growing Warner Bros.’ digital games business, Junge will also oversee Turbine, a privately-held online gaming studio that he helped the studio acquire, and he will also continue to oversee the integration of TT Games, which the Studio acquired in 2007.  Junge will also work to expand and leverage Turbine’s digital publishing and community platforms across all of the Studio’s home entertainment businesses.  Most recently, Junge served as SVP/Business Management for Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group, where he drove mergers and acquisitions and unifying strategic initiatives across all of the Studio’s home entertainment divisions.  Junge joined the Studio in 200.

RATINGS

Nickelodeon‘s premiere of its new True Jackson, VP TV movie, Trapped in Paris, on Saturday, May 22 (8-9p), was the top Basic Cable program in its time period with Total Viewers 2+ (3.4 million).  The hour-long movie debut was also was the top telecast on all TV in its time period with K2-11 (1.9 million, +41%), K6-11 (1.5 million, +62%) and Tweens 9-14 (1.3 million, +85%).
