Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 19, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

If you are in the fashion industry, eventually you must head to Paris, and that is where True and friends set out for in the one-hour True Jackson, VP TV movie, Trapped in Paris, premiering this Saturday, May 22 at 8p on Nickelodeon.  But, True and friends are not headed for fashion houses  they are headed to Paris, posing as flight attendants, find a lost wedding ring of their eccentric boss.  The special features special guest star DJ Lance Rock (Lance Robertson) and the cast of Nick’s preschool music series Yo Gabba Gabba!, as well as Gage Golightly from the network’s series The Troop.  Immediately following the TV movie, True Jackson, VP star Keke Palmer will offer viewers insights into her life in the 30-minute special, 7 Secrets: Keke Palmer, at 9p.  The premiere and encores of Trapped in Paris will be simulcast on Nick Mobile, and after the premiere, the TV movie will also be available in HD on iTunes.  Additionally, 7 Secrets: Keke Palmer will be available on iTunes for a limited time and portions of the special will be available on mobile video-on-demand.  Additionally, Comcast will also offer a True Jackson, VP dedicated category in June that will feature the TV movie as well as new VOD episodes from the series.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Disney announces the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, will be filmed in 3D and released on May 20, 2011.  The newest chapter of Jerry Bruckheimer’s swashbuckling action/adventure movie franchise will be directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago).

Pterodactyl Productions and producer Mark Canton‘s (300) Atmosphere Entertainment are teaming to bring an updated version Malibu’s diminutive surfer gal Gidget back to the beach for both the big screen and TV, per Variety.  Pterodactyl’s co-founder Barney Cohen, who co-wrote/co-exec. produced Showtime’s Sabrina the Teenage Witch movie, has entered into deal with Gidget Worldwide to develop Gidget movie and TV projects that will focus on the strong young female character and current tween/teen issues.  Gidget Worldwide has grown the brand to include surf, wakeboard, skateboard, snowboard and other sports products as well as events.  Based on the 1957 Gidget novel by Frederick Kohner, there were several Gidget movies, TV series and TV movies, with some eight or so different actresses playing Gidget, including Sandra Dee, Sally Field and Karen Valentine.

Will there be a third The Nutty Professor with Eddie Murphy?  Well, according to a discussion Murphy had with Access Hollywood, he is indeed developing a concept for another The Nutty Professor.  Murphy says whether or not the threequel will move ahead will depend on if Universal thinks the movie is funny.  The first The Nutty Professor movie featuring Eddie Murphy was released in 1996, followed by Nutty Professor II: The Klumps in 2000, which earned domestic box office grosses of $128.8 million and $123.3 million respectively, per Box Office Mojo.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Sesame Street is teaming with kid’ author/artist Todd Parr to feature his distinctive work on the upcoming 41st season of the acclaimed Sesame Street TV series.  Working in collaboration, the Sesame Street creative team and Parr have developed a one-minute segment that is designed to help young kids deal with normal childhood fears.

PBS Kids celebrates summer fun with season-themed episodes of its series, beginning Monday, September 24 with a new episode of Dinosaur Train.  Then every Monday through July, kids can see new episodes of shows including Sid The Science Kid, Super Why, and Wordgirl, as well as a new episode of Cyberchase on Friday, June 25.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Bazooka Candy Brands, a division of The Topps Company, is launching a multiplatform promotion for M. Night Shyamalan’s movie The Last Airbender, a Paramount movie that is based on the Nickelodeon animated series.  Launching this month, the Bazooka Candy Brands promotion will feature characters from the movie in their candy brands, including Baby Bottle Pop candy, Jumbo Push Pop, lollipop, and Juicy Drop Pop candy.  The promotion will reflect the 3D look and feel of the characters.  Additionally, Bazooka Candy Brands will create an online destination with the development of a promotional web site, Candymania.com, which will also offer a multi-level game featuring characters from the movie.  The Last Airbender releases on July 2, 2010.

Copyright Promotions Licensing Group (CPLG), the licensing division of Cookie Jar, is named as the worldwide licensing agent for the Degrassi TV franchise.  CPLG will target teenage girls and young adults with a range of Degrassi consumer products, apparel and publishing.  To that end CPLG has inked an apparel deal with 5th Sun, which will release Degrassi t-shirts exclusively at Hot Topic beginning this summer.  This marks the first time in Degrassi’s 30-year history that apparel and books based on the property will be available.  The Degrassi franchise, which has touched on most every issue possible, made its initial debut in 1980 with The Kids of Degrassi TV series on CBC (Canada).  As many know, that series was followed by three other series, Degrassi Junior High, Degrassi High and Degrassi: The Next Generation, as well as three TV movies, two mini-series, and a documentary.

Target Entertainment Group appoints Kidz Entertainment as the licensing sub-agent for PlayStation brand and select PlayStation software intellectual properties (IPs) across Eastern Europe and Scandinavia.  Under the deal, Kidz Entertainment will manage the merchandise program across all consumer products categories, excluding PlayStation peripherals and specific accessories.  PlayStation IPs licensed to Kidz Entertainment include LittleBigPlanet, God of War, Ratchet and Clank, Wipeout, EyePet and Invizimals.

Ignition Licensing enters into a licensing partnership with The Jim Henson Company to represent Fraggle Rock in the UK, where the series airs regularly on Cartoon Network.  The first Fraggle Rock UK licensees include Manhattan Toy Company (plush and puppets), Rasta Imposta (dress up), Fashion UK (apparel) and Hype (greetings cards).  Ignition is currently in discussions with partners in categories including gifting and collectibles, stationery, apparel and accessories, publishing and homewares.

4Kids Entertainment International has been named to represent the preschool property Penelope around the world, excluding Asia and France.  The animated Penelope series (52 episodes, 2 Christmas specials) is produced by Japan’s Nippon Animation.  Penelope is based on the books by Anne Gutman and Georg Hallensleben, which was first published by licensor France-based Gallimard Jeunesse.  The books include 48 titles (pop-up books, paperback and gift books), and have been translated into 14+ languages with 2+ million copies sold worldwide.  In March of this year a Penelope musical ran in Japan, where there are 700+ licensed products based on the property available.  4Kids will showcase the property at Licensing Expo in Las Vegas next month.

Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) completes a raft of outdoor and summer products deals for a number of Nickelodeon properties:

  • For Germany/Austria/Switzerland, long-term licensing partner Simba Toys renews its deal for a variety of SpongeBob SquarePants summer and outdoor toys (e.g. bodyboards, water squirters and sprinklers, wind-up boats and fishing games).
  • In South Africa: Buzzdi Fashions inks a swimwear deal for Dora the Explorer, featuring swimsuits for K2-6; Style-Eyes of California will create Dora the Explorer outerwear; Style-Eyes also sings a deal for iCarly outerwear.
  • In Turkey, Ataman will produce SpongeBob SquarePants wet wipes, the first time the company has entered into a licensed wet wipes deal.
  • Industrial Juguetera for a range of Dora the Explorer themed battery powered outdoor products including bikes, scooters, tricycles, cars, plus play tents, for Spain and Portugal.
  • Also in for Spain and Portugal, melamine product producer NV Corporacion will produce SpongeBob SquarePants branded travelling and picnic-ware; additionally, for Spain, K-Ractermania will launch summer and beach SpongeBob SquarePants accessories (e.g. beach bags, belts, wallets, isothermal bags, and camera cases).
