Cynopsis: Kids!
03.27.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 27, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Today’s Top Headlines
We’ve got kids news covered for you daily during Upfront season…

Keep it all in the family: That seems to be the thinking behind ABC Family’s decision to green-light the original one-hour drama series Ravenswood, a spinoff of the network’s No. 1 rated series Pretty Little Liars. ABC Fam also picked up Pretty Little Liars for a fifth season. Both series are produced by Warner Horizon Television. Ravenswood, which will debut this October after the annual Pretty Little Liars Halloween special, centers on five strangers who are drawn together to solve a generations-long deadly curse that’s haunted their Pennsylvania town, not too far from PLL’s Rosewood.

Programming Picks

The Jim Henson Co. is scanning the world to find the next big hit. Perhaps in a nod to the global sensation Gangnam Style, the company has acquired the rights outside of Asia for another YouTube sensation, I Love Egg, from Korea’s D&H Inc. Henson will prime the I Love Egg brand, which has also appeared on Cartoon Network Japan, for both global TV distribution and consumer products, the first property Henson has signed for both global consumer products and international media distribution. “This interstitial programming appeals to a vast audience ranging in age from preschool to tweens and has enormous potential for development as a traditional animated series, especially with the support of the merchandising campaign that will be developed around it,” said Richard Goldsmith, EVP, global distribution Henson.

Montreal-based Sardine Productions will develop a children’s television show based on The Mammoth Academy, a book series by British author and illustrator Neal Layton, with TVOKids, a division of Ontario’s public educational media organization TVO.

CBeebies kids block is unveiling a cool new series featuring poetry for children translated entirely into British Sign Language (BSL). Magic Hands will feature the works of poets from Robert Louis Stephenson to Roger Stevens delivered in bite-sized five-minute packages that mix sign language, spoken word, music and animation to engage both deaf and hearing children. A co-commission with BBC Learning, the series is being developed by Remark Ltd., a company owned, staffed and run by people who are hearing-impaired.

Launch update: Nickelodeon will debut a Peter Rabbit primetime special at 7 p.m. on March 29, followed by the series launch of Lalaloopsy. Lalaloopsy, based on the line of rag dolls, will air regularly weekdays at 1:30 p.m.

Digital Update

Canada’s Guru Studio nabbed its first multi-territory deal with Netflix, for its preschool series Justin Time. Netflix acquired subscription VOD (SVOD) rights to begin airing select seasons of the series for the U.S. and U.K. beginning in April, and Latin America beginning in June. The series will be included in Netflix’s Just For Kids package, which the Internet service launched in August 2011. In 2012, Netflix members watched more than 2 billion hours of kids content.

Spanish production company BRB Internacional is showing the world it’s serious about delivering kids content on a global basis. The company this week becomes one of the first global aggregators of animation content on YouTube. BRB has its own channel on YouTube, available in eight languages, as well as several other channels specific to its different series including Bernard, Suckers, Canimals. As a cartoon aggregator, it will also manage other content networks and update delivery across formats including capsules, webisodes and interactive media.

SLR Production has just released its first-ever iPad game. Guess How Much I Love You  The Adventures of Little Nutbrown Hare is now available globally for iPad, after an initial limited release earlier this year in Australia.

Licensing News

Entertainment management and production company The Collective is teaming with HarperCollins Children’s Books to launch a series of joke and picture books inspired web-series-cum-Cartoon-Network show Annoying Orange. The deal was brokered on behalf of The Collective by The Joester Loria Group. The first joke book, Annoying Orange: How to Be Annoying, will debut this fall, followed by Annoying Orange: Halloweenie, in summer 2014 and additional titles. Annoying Orange debuted on YouTube in October 2009 and has racked up more than 1 billion total views with over 2.7 million YouTube channel subscribers

By The Numbers

Not surprisingly, Nickelodeon had a huge ratings week surrounding the 26th annual Kids’ Choice Awards. The Awards were viewed by 12 million total viewers over the weekend, including the Saturday live premiere and two encore Sunday airings. The Saturday premiere drew 5.8 million viewers and ranks as the week’s top telecast with kids and tweens across all demos. To boot, the network posted double-digit gains with its core demo for the week, making the week its highest-rated of the year with kids 2-11 and total viewers.
