Cynopsis: Kids!

06/09/10

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 9, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Fitz Roy Media (FRM) inks a licensing deal with Brothers Entertainment Merchandising (BEM) and Odd Rods Productions to develop Odd Rods ( www.oddrods.com ), the popular 1970s monster/muscle vehicle trading card/sticker series, for animation, games, trading cards and merchandising.  Under the long-term licensing deal, FRM will develop, produce and distribute Odd Rods animated content based on the 300+ Odd Rods characters, as well as creating a digital trading card library, gaming content and consumer products.  The animation and gaming content will feature original rock music.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Disney Channel has begun production on its new original TV movie Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure.  Directed by Michael Lembeck (Tooth Fairy, Santa Clause 2 and 3), the movie stars Ashley Tisdale reprising her High School Musical (TV movie and feature film) role as Sharpay Evans.  Robert Horn (the Broadway show 13, writer/producer Designing Women) wrote the movie. The movie also stars Austin Butler (Life Unexpected, Ruby and the Rockits) and Bradley Steven Perry (Good Luck Charlie), and will feature Cameron Goodman (Phineas and Ferb), Alec Mapa (Ugly Betty), and Jack Plotnick (The Mentalist).  Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure will include four original songs by the songwriting teams of Randy Petersen and Kevin Quinn (I’m Gonna Shine), Matthew Tishler and Amy Powers (My Boy and Me and The Rest of My Life), David Lawrence and Faye Greenberg (New York’s Best Kept Secret).  Tisdale will also serve as executive producer of the movie, along with Barry Rosenbush and Bill Borden (both of the High School Musical).

MORE KIDS STUFF

RDF Rights inks two new Italian broadcast deals for the TV series Waybuloo.  Picking up 100 episodes of the preschool series are Italy’s Rai Yoyo and DeAKids.  Waybuloo is produced by The Foundation, part of the RDF Media Group, and Decode Entertainment for CBeebies.  RDF Rights holds worldwide rights (excluding Canada) in all media for the property.  In Canada Decode Enterprises handles broadcast and home entertainment rights, and DHX Licensing represents consumer products rights.

Kids will get a sneak peek at Skechers Entertainment‘s new animated TV series Zevo-3 (26×22) by way of a promotional DVD insert in 1-million Skechers shoe boxes for back-t0-school.  Slated to premiere on Nicktoons this fall, Zevo-3 is a comedy-action/adventures series that features a mix of 2D animation and 3D CGI effects.  Created by John Masse, Zevo-3 is a Skechers Entertainment production in association with Moonscoop.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Emily the Strange signs with Virgin Records for a “secret” music project slated to bow in early 2011.  While shrouded in secrecy, the project is said to feature noted musicians and collaborators, as well as a full merchandising program across multiple categories.  The new music deal was brokered by the Emily the Strange licensing agency, Gator Group.

Discovery Communications launches two new baby/toddler/parent-centric brand extensions this week at Licensing Expo, Animal Planet Baby with licensing agent Joester Loria Group (JLG) and TLC Baby with licensing agent Big Tent Entertainment.

  • Animal Planet Baby is Discovery’s new infant and toddler product brand for North America that will include products across a range of categories.  Discovery and JLG are seeking partners for Animal Planet Baby in the infant bedding, home decor and plush categories.  Animal Planet began expanding into the toddler category earlier this year, signing several new licensing deals for toddler products and apparel that will be available under the Animal Planet brand, but will feature the Animal Planet Baby color palette and design scheme.  JLG is handling all deals for Animal Planet Baby.
  • TLC Baby, an extension of TLC’s baby programming, is a brand of products designed to help new and expecting parents as their babies develop and grow.  Big Tent Entertainment will oversee all licensing for the new brand and will focus on partners in key categories such as learning and development, health and safety, bath, feeding, electronics, furniture, room decor, bedding/blankets, layette, and apparel.

Chorion unveils a new fashion line based on Little Miss Sunshine, which is part of its Mr. Men and Little Miss brand, this week at International Licensing Expo in Las Vegas.  Set to launch in the US in spring 2011, the Little Miss Sunshine apparel and accessories collection is targeted to teens and young adults.  Chorion developed the new line with kid apparel designer Watermelon Europe (Hello Kitty, Miffy, Forever Friends).  The line is expected to expand to additional territories including UK, France, Australia and Japan.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) and Sears announce the North America launch of the popular Japanese character Rebecca Bonbon, a fashionable French bulldog character, created by Yuk0 Shimizu (creator of Hello Kitty).  Some 320+ Rebecca Bonbon products will rollout Sears and Kmart stores and online across the US and Canada beginning August 1, 2010.  FME and sears are currently developing new products for holiday 2010 and spring 2011.  The new US Rebecca Bonbon website ( www.usarebeccabonbon.com) launched here earlier this month and features character information, games, wallpaper, post cards, photos and contests.

CPLG Canada signs further licensing deals for Caillou and Pink Cookie Design.

  • New and extended deals for Cookie Jar Entertainment’s Caillou property include: Calego (a new line of bags); Deco Pac (cake decorations); Gertex (socks and headwear); Brighter Minds Media (software); and Koba Entertainment launches a new live show, Caillou’s Greatest Skate of All, in Canada this winter.
  • For the fashion lifestyle brand Pink Cookie Design: Stoneridge Cycle is creating a line of branded bikes that will be available at retail in Canada.

Marvel completes two new housewares licensing deals with Tupperware Brands and Tervis Tumbler.

  • Tupperware Brands will produce a line featuring Marvel’s character including Spider Sense Spider-Man, Marvel Heroes and Super Hero Squad for products such as cereal bowls, sandwich containers, tumblers, lunch bags, snack cups, ice pop molds, utensils, water bottles, lunch containers and food canisters.  The new Marvel collection will be distributed via catalog and Tupperware sales people in the US, Canada, Venezuela, Mexico and Brazil beginning this July.
  • Tervis Tumbler will produce a range of tumblers and ice buckets also featuring Marvel characters and brands including Spider Sense Spider-Man, Marvel Heroes, Super Hero Squad and Marvel Retro.  These new products can also be personalized with names, initials or words.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

E1 Entertainment appoints Olivier Dumont as Managing Director, E1 Kids.  He will oversee the commercial and creative efforts of E1 Kids, including development, production, sales, licensing and merchandising across its UK, US and Canadian operations.  Dumont will report to John Morayniss, CEO, E1 Television.  Dumont will also continue to oversee development and production at Frog Box, a company he founded that now has an exclusive distribution deal with E1.  For the last five years, Dumont has toiled as MD of Paris-based TV Loonland.

Discovery Channel executive Tom Cosgrove is named President and GM of the Sony Corporation, Discovery Communications and IMAX Corporation joint venture set up to develop the first 24/7 dedicated 3D TV network.  He will report to the joint venture’s board of directors.  Cosgrove most recently served as EVP and COO for Discovery Channel, where he was also responsible for the formation of the Discovery Times Square Exhibitions, as well as windowing strategies for all Discovery digital platforms.  Rebecca Glashow, SVP/Digital Distribution, Discovery Communications, will oversee distribution for the channel.  Amy Carney, President/Advertiser Sales, Sony Pictures Television, will lead advertising/promotion sales, and Sony Pictures Television will provide all related advertising sales-related services for the joint venture.  The network will feature content from a range of genres that are appealing in 3D, including natural history, space, exploration, adventure, engineering, science and technology and motion pictures from Discovery, Sony Pictures Entertainment, IMAX and other third-party providers.

Tricon Films & Television names Toronto-based PR firm, Holmes Creative Communications (HCC), as its agency of record.  Tricon and HCC have previously worked together on projects including the kid/tween-targeted YTV series The Next Star.
