Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 26, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Monday night’s Game 6 clincher of the 2013 Stanley Cup Finals saw 8.16 million viewers tuning in to NBC for the matchup, up 66% over last year’s Game 6 and making it the second-most watched Game 6 since 1994, according to Nielsen. The game drew a 4.7 household rating for a 52% uptick over last year. Those numbers helped propel that Stanley Cup series to rank as the most-watched Stanley Cup Final on record, averaging 5.76 million viewers across NBC and NBC Sports Network. Overall, the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs averaged 1.467 million viewers on NBC, NBC Sports Network and CNBC (84 games), making it the most-watched post-season since 1997 and up 18% vs. last year.
Coverage of the 100th Tour de France gets ready to roll on Saturday at 7:30a on NBC Sports Network. Overall, all 21 stages of the world’s most prestigious cycling race will be covered by NBC and NBCSN as well as online and via mobile on NBC Sports Tour de France Live, with NBC carrying Stage 2 on Sunday, June 30, and live coverage of Stage 8 on Saturday, July 6. For the first time, NBC Sports Group’s coverage will feature reporting from the road via ‘Inside-the-Race’ correspondent Steve Porino, who will report from a motorcycle on the race course. Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen will call the race action for the live shows with reporters Steve Schlanger and Carolyn Manno.
ESPN reports ratings spikes for the 12 group stage matches of the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013 on ESPN and ESPN2. The network nabbed an average audience of 485,000 viewers to mark a rise of 26% compared to the last group stage matches during South Africa 2009, according to Nielsen. Saturday’s Italy/Brazil match was seen by an average of 933,000 viewers to deliver the most-watched Confederations Cup Group Play match on an ESPN network, and bested the previous high of USA/Italy from 2009.
NBA TV’s NBA GameTime pre- and post-game coverage during The Finals rose 28% among total viewers compared to year-ago numbers. This year’s average of 186,000 total viewers for pre- and post-game coverage was a new record for the network.
ONE World Sports landed the rights to carry exclusive coverage of all men’s and women’s soccer matches in the 2013 East Asian Football Federation’s EAFF East Asian Cup next month. All showings will air live or by same-day delay starting July 20 and running through July 28, for a total 12 international matches from the men’s and women’s clashes.
MLB Network unveiled a slate of 26 games in July, including tripleheaders on Independence Day and July 30. The July 4 holiday will see 13 hours of live baseball coverage on the network with Brewers/Nationals at 11a, Orioles/White Sox at 2p and Mariners/Rangers at 8p. July 30 programming includes Pirates/Cardinals at 4p, Mariners/Red Sox at 7p and Reds/Padres at 10p.
HBO brings in The Fight Game with Jim Lampley on Saturday at 12:30a, offering the storylines, newsmakers and issues that are top-of-mind in boxing. The series debuts immediately following the HBO Boxing After Dark tripleheader headlined by the world middleweight title fight between titleholder Gennady Golovkin and Matthew Macklin at 9:45p.
Patrick Kane, MVP of the 2013 Stanley Cup champions the Chicago Blackhawks, hits the stage of Late Night with David Letterman tonight to talk about his team’s championship at 11:35 on CBS.
Speaking of the Stanley Cup, Comcast SportsNet Chicago will replay the Game 6 telecast Thursday night at 7p ct. This special will also include the post-game, on-ice ceremony featuring the hoisting of the Cup by team captain Jonathan Toews and Blackhawks players/coaches/management, along with the Conn Smythe Trophy award presentation to playoff MVP Patrick Kane.

Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment locked in a deal with BlackBerry to serve as the Official Mobile Computing Partner of the Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL), Toronto Raptors (NBA) and Toronto Marlies (AHL). The deal with see the BlackBerry brand featured in and around Air Canada Centre. In addition, BlackBerry will collaborate with MLSE to develop a range of new platforms that will enable teams to connect with fans by sharing information and updates.
Polaroid is building a stable of athletes to promote their new line of mountable hi-definition sports action cameras, inking deals with wakeboarding and wakesurfing athletes Noah and Keenan Flegel to be part of the newly formed Polaroid Action team. The company is also the Official Action Camera of the King of Wake series.
Kansas Athletics and ESPN locked in a seven-year agreement for ESPN3 to carry a minimum of 70 live events distributed nationally. The deal begins with the 2013-14 and supplements the recently announced deal with Time Warner Cable to air 50 KU contests on Metro Sports. The 70 events include one regular-season football game, the football spring game, six men’s basketball games (including two exhibition games) and basketball’s Late Night in the Phog, as well as 16 women’s basketball games. ESPN3 will also deliver the Kansas Relays and multiple volleyball, baseball, softball and women’s soccer games.
The National Federation of State High School Associations and PlayOn! Sports announced the creation of the NFHS Network, an all-digital network devoted to coverage of high school athletic content through the Federation’s state association members. The NFHS Network is expected to launch at the beginning of the 2013-14 school year and will feature coverage of boys and girls sports and activities from across the country, will be a subscription-based digital service available at NFHSnetwork.com. The NFHS Network is designed to become the largest aggregated destination for coverage of high school sports in the country.
NBA.com saw more than 646 million page views during this year’s Finals, up 57% vs. last year. In addition, the site also delivered over 434 million video streams, up 120% when compared with the 2012 Finals.
