Cynopsis: Kids!
06/20/12

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 20, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

DQ Entertainment Ireland Limited (DQE) is getting into the feature film business with the creation of a dedicated division that will begin production with an adaption of The Jungle Book, aiming for a theatrical release in 2014. The film is based on the Rudyard Kipling classic story and is budgeted as a $45 million 3D animated film. DQE has lined up animation talent including screenwriter Billy Frolick, who penned Madagascar, and co-directors Jun Falkenstein, whose credits include The Smurfs and Despicable Me, and Kevin Johnson, who worked on Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked and Harry Potter & The Sorcerer’s Stone. The Jungle Book adaptation is the the first in what DQE expects to be a regular slate of films, including two additional titles based on classic literature. Animation production for the first flick will be based at DQE’s headquarters in Hyderabad, India with pre- and post-production in Los Angeles.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Disney Television Animation starts production on new animated series The 7D, based on the Seven Dwarfs of fairytale legend and set in a contemporary world. The show is geared for the 2 to 7 audience with a 2014 debut on Disney Junior channels and programming blocks around the world.

The Hub renews its popular live-action series Family Game Night for a third season that will premiere in fall 2012, the network said. The series is hosted by Todd Newton, who was recently nominated for his second Daytime Emmy for best host.

9 Story Entertainment’s preschool animated series Wibbly Pig joins the lineup on the Sprout network, the Canadian entertainment company said. Sprout is available in 50 million homes and also runs on-demand and online. Wibbly Pig is based on the Wibbly Pig book and features the title character engaging in daily activities in a fantastical way.

Canada-based film production group Bron Studios starts an animation division called Bron Animation, with plans to produce kids animated series for film and TV. The first project in the pipeline is Mighty Mighty Monsters, based on a book series featuring classic movie monster “kids” in Frankenstein, Dracula and Wolfman as they are expelled from monster school and sent to a  regular  i.e. human  middle school.

LICENSING

Cartoon Network Enterprises inks a licensing partnership with flash drive maker Mimoco to bring several characters from the network’s comedy Adventure Time to a collection of designer flash drives. Characters Finn, Jake, Princess Bubblegum, and Fionna will grace the flash drives that will also come with Adventure Time episodes and sound bytes starting this summer at Comic-Con.

For its inaugural event in July, the Toronto Animation Arts Festival International will hold an animation-centric pitch opportunity dubbed Pitch-a-Palooza as part of the festival’s effort to support Canada’s animation community. The inaugural three-day festival runs July 6 to 8, with the pitch events preceding the opening. Pitch Lab runs on July 4 and includes industry veterans and development executives helping new animators by sharing insight on what they do and don’t want in a pitch, and The MonkeyWorks takes place on July 5 and gives those animators a chance to workshop and finetune their pitches before they present them in the Pitch-A-Palooza, slated for July 7.
