Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 6, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
That’s gonna be one big bunny! Production has begun on the new stop-motion animated, preschool/family aimed feature film Miffy the Movie, which is based on Dutch author/illustrator Dick Bruna’s popular white rabbit Miffy character and the puppet animated TV series Miffy and Friends. Telescreen Filmproductions, a division of Telescreen B.V., which in turn is a subsidiary of the Germany’s m4e AG, and Mercis, which manages the rights Bruna’s work, have teamed for the movie with Warner Bros. Netherlands and Dutch pubcaster KRO Television. Production of the movie is supported by the Netherlands Film Fund and CoBO Fonds. Media Programme of the European Community supported the development of the film. Produced in collaboration with Denmark’s A.Film Production and a team of stop motion animators in Latvia, Miffy the Movie is being directed by Hans Perk, from a screenplay by James Still. Production on the movie is slated to be completed in 2012, with plans for its worldwide theatrical release in 2013.
Paramount‘s Transformers: Dark of the Moon 3D, the third movie in the Michael Bay directed Transformers franchise, sets new Imax worldwide record, earning $23.1 million since the movie’s release on June 28. Transformers: Dark of the Moon opened in 146 domestic/North American Imax theaters earning $14 million ($88,500/per screen). Internationally, the movie showed on 105 Imax screens grossing $9.1 million ($87,000/per screen). The movie is set to run on approximately 148 Imax screens overseas with several key markets, such as China and Japan, still to open.
Adam Sandler will lend his voice to Dracula in Sony Pictures Animation‘s 3D family comedy Hotel Transylvania. Directed by Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars, Dexter’s Laboratory, among other work), the movie is set for release on September 21, 2012, by Columbia Pictures. The film is produced by Michelle Murdocca (Open Season, Stuart Little 1 & 2) and the animation is by Sony Pictures Imageworks. The voiceover cast for Hotel Transylvania also includes Kevin James (as Frank, aka Frankenstein), Fran Drescher (Frank’s in-your-face bride), David Spade (a gourmet Quasimodo), Steve Buscemi and Molly Shannon (was a married werewolf couple and parents), Cee Lo Green (Murray the boisterous Mummy), and Andy Samberg (as Jonathan, a regular young adult guy staying at the hotel).

Family Channel (Canada) will premiere the new animated Disney Channel Original Movie Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension on Friday, August 5 at 8p, the same day and date as Disney Channel US. The TV movie will then make its Disney XD debut on August 20. To support the premiere of Across the 2nd Dimension, Disney XD OnDemand will feature episodes from season one of Phineas and Ferb beginning July 19, while season two episodes are already available on Family OnDemand. Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension will also be available via Disney XD OnDemand from August 23 and Family OnDemand from August 26. Additionally, Family.ca ( www.family.ca ) and DisneyXD.ca ( www.disneyxd.ca ) will debut movie-based supersites, which leading up to its debut will feature new games including The Movie Game: The Dimension of Doooom!, new activities, behind-the-scenes footage from the movie and a contest.
Cartoon Network channels in the US and Canada will premiere the new animated series Redakai: Conquer the Kairu simultaneously on Saturday, July 23 at 10a. From Spin Master and Zodiak Kids/Marathon Media, Redakai: Conquer the Kairu will air regularly on Saturdays at 10a. The series follows the adventures of teens Ky, a student of ancient martial arts, Maya and Boomer as they set out on a quest around the globe to find the Kairu, an alien energy source, in order to save the universe. Already available at hobby stores across North America, the Redakai trading card game will be available at mass retailers beginning this August 2011.
Penguin Children’s Books acquires the worldwide publishing rights to Herotainment‘s Herotopia ( www.herotopia.com ), the new virtual world and massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) filled with superheroes and supervillains. The Herotopia-based books will be published under Penguin’s pop culture imprint Sunbird. Sunbird also publishes books based on other digital properties including Moshi Monsters and Club Penguin.
A number of Studio100 characters, including those from Maya the Bee, Vicky the Viking, House of Anubis and Tabalgua & Co., will be featured in new rides at the theme park Holiday Park in Hassloch, Germany, which was acquired last year by Plopsa, a division of Studio 100. Plopsa plans to develop and re-organize Holiday Park over the next three years, and has already invested about US$4.4 million and seen an increase in park attendance of +60% over the previous year. Over the next five years Plopsa plans to invest an additional $143.3 million into the German theme park market. Plopsa also owns three parks in Belgium (De Panne, Plopsa Indoor Hasselt, and Plopsa Coo), and one in the Netherlands (Plopsa Indoor Coevorden). In addition to the new character themed rides, the Holiday Park’s existing rides will be integrated into the plans for the park.
Big Idea Entertainment enters into an exclusive licensing deal with Wacky Wallscapes to feature the VeggieTales characters on its kid’s wall coverings. Under the new pact, Wacky Wallscapes will create full size VeggieTales characters along with its library of themed background scenes, which can be custom sized.

Ben Richardson is appointed VP and GM, Nickelodeon Australia. Richardson, who will oversee the Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. channels, takes over the reins from Katrina Southon who earlier this year was upped to SVP and MD, Viacom International Media Networks Australia and New Zealand. For the last six years Richardson has held various roles at Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) operations in India, Indonesia, Japan and most recently Korea where he served as VP and GM/MTV Networks Korea. Richardson is credited with leading Nickelodeon to its best ratings in Korea, as well as leading MTV Korea to new ratings and revenue records. Nickelodeon Australia is a joint venture between VIMN and XYZnetworks. Prior to joining MTV Networks, Richardson was Executive Producer/XYZnetworks, where he executive produced subscription TV events including Big Day Out and Band in a Bubble.
Scholastic Media promotes Lynne Karppi to Director/Creative and Production Development, Consumer Productions. Karppi, who joined the company in 2004, works with licensees and partners worldwide on the development and design of Scholastic Media’s portfolios of products, packaging and merchandising.

- Ruta Rimas is named Associate Editor of the Atheneum and Margaret K. McElderry imprints. She will report to Justin Chanda. Rimas joins the publisher from HarperCollins where she worked with Donna Bray of the Balzer and Bray imprint. Prior to kid’s publishing Rimas was a teacher.
- Simon Pulse, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing Division, finds a new Editorial Assistant in Michael Strother.
