Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 25, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

PepsiCo has locked down the NFL’s Super Bowl Halftime Show in a multi-year sponsorship deal that will see the beverage brand engulf the most watched annual concert in the world. As part of the deal, Pepsi will also have 60 seconds of ad inventory during this season’s Super Bowl XLVII broadcast on CBS and help the league mold the fan viewing experience of the halftime show. 

“Pepsi’s deep-rooted heritage with the Super Bowl and with music truly makes this relationship a natural fit,” said Adam Harter, VP Consumer Engagement, PepsiCo Beverages. “As the most watched and highly-anticipated entertainment event of the year, the Super Bowl Halftime show is right at the heart of sports and music. On the Air

In a 3-2 vote, the FCC upheld an FCC judge’s ruling that Comcast discriminated against Tennis Channel, ordering the company to “provide The Tennis Channel, Inc. with carriage equal to that of its similarly situated affiliates, Golf Channel and Versus (now NBC Sports Network), to the extent described” within 45 days. The ruling, however, stated that Comcast does not have to give the network similar channel positioning as the other outlets. Tennis Channel quickly sent out a statement reading, “Today’s decision underscores that Comcast’s power comes with a concurrent responsibility to see to it that the freedoms of speech and expression of the diverse programmers that serve these communities are not stifled simply because they compete with networks that the sole cable provider in the marketplace happens to own.”

NBC Sports Network will take on the mornings, announcing a new highlights series dubbed The ‘Lights. The series will deliver the major scores and highlights from the previous night and air weekday mornings during a new two-hour programing block. The series begins Monday, August 13 at 7a and launch the channel’s post-Olympics programming schedule. Interestingly, the program will feature no host, and instead showcase video clips, graphics and voiceovers.

FOX Sports Radio is entering a multi-platform partnership with the company’s sports opinion site and blog network Yardbarker that will combine the two platforms’ resources to expand their relationships with sports fans nationwide. As part of the move, FOX Sports Radio’s Loose Cannons will feature a daily segment with co-hosts Pat O’Brien, Steve Hartman and Vic “The Brick” Jacobs as they give listeners scoop from Yardbarker. FOX Sports Radio will soon add similar segments across other network programs. In addition, Yardbarker will feature select content from FOX Sports Radio on their website and social media platforms.

UFC on FOX is set for another edition on Aug. 4, with the channel bringing in Curt Menefee to kick off the night, where he will host pre- as well as post-fight coverage beside Randy Couture and Brian Stann. Once the bouts begin, UFC announcers Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg will call the shots. On July 29 at 2p, the network will host a first-ever UFC on FOX preview special, Road to the Octagon.

TeleFutura’s live broadcast of Liga MX’s Atlante/Pachuca match on Sunday averaged 622,000 total viewers for the channel, with a .34 rating and 388,000 average viewers. The demos saw the game draw 201,000 A18-34, 375,000 A18-49 and 265,000 M18-49.

Scott Van Pelt’s extended stay at ESPN is now official, with the company announcing a multi-year extension which will add several on-site College GameDay appearances throughout the football season. He will also will remain among SportsCenter’s 11p anchors, and continue to host ESPN Radio’s Scott Van Pelt Show.

WWE announced that the company’s Monday Night Raw historic 1,000th episode broke records for television viewership and online engagement, according to Nielsen, drawing a 3.9 rating and accumulating 52 worldwide Twitter trends. The episode marked a move to a three-hour format with a new start time of 8p on USA Network.

Congrats to CBS staple Jim Nantz, who is set to receive the fourth annual Court of Honor Award from the National Association of Basketball Coaches Foundation on Monday, September 17 in NYC.

ESPN Dallas announced that it had agreed to a one-year contract extension with Drew Pearson, who had worked at ESPN Dallas 103.3 for the last two NFL seasons. The former Cowboys’ star will join Ben and Skin co-hosts Ben Rogers & Jeff “Skin” Wade on Mondays, do Friday call-ins to Galloway and Company, and co-host the The 5th Quarter Cowboys post-game show.

The dominos keep falling. State Farm will pull its ads from Penn State football broadcasts, according to the AP, with General Motors mulling a similar move. State Farm said it had been mulling its relationship with the university since Jerry Sandusky’s arrest last November. The company will, however, continue to advertise during Penn State’s away contests.

The Madison Square Garden Company named Justin Johnson to the new position of Senior Vice President, Partnership Strategy for MSG Sports where he will lead the partnership strategy team responsible for managing marketing partnerships for the MSG Sports and MSG Entertainment divisions, as well as working with company-wide Signature Partners Anheuser-Busch, Coca-Cola and Delta Air Lines and JPMorgan Chase.

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association inked a multi-year partnership with SNAP Infusion Supercandy, a sports nutrition brand. As a partner, SNAP Infusion will be provide the for the professional alpine, freestyle, nordic, freeskiing, and snowboarding sports athletes as well as fans and include event sponsorship.
Digital Fields is offering fans, for the first time, coaches’ film of every play from every game in 2012. The footage will be available via the site’s Game Rewind and Game Pass products. The clips will feature two exclusive camera angles, “All-22” and “High End Zone” views, for every play in 2012, as well as every play from the archived 2011 season. In addition, the site is launching a telestrator function the will allow fans to analyze plays by drawing over a still frame with their finger and then share their findings with friends.

The Open Championship saw gains across ESPN digital platforms, according to the company, with an average minute audience of 46,400, up 40% over the previous year. The Golf section averaged 728,000 daily unique visitors and 5.6 million total daily minutes over the four days of the event, up 27% and 5%, respectively. is launching a Twitter chat for its own Olympic team in an event with MSN that will Dominique Dawes, Maurice Greene, Christian Laettner and Amy Van Dyken. The team will discuss great moments in the past, as well as the upcoming 2012 Olympics in London.
