Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 12, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

WNET’s Thirteen and the team behind the PBS kid-targeted series Cyberchase are set to launch Get the Math, a new math-centric multimedia project that aims to bolster tween/teen interest and understanding, thus success, in algebra.  Premiering on Thirteen, Sunday, February 20, from 11:30a and airing nationwide on public TV (check local listings), Get the Math combines reality-style TV and online challenges to help middle and high school students see the relevance of math in real careers and encourage them to be interested in algebra and.  The website, GetTheMath.org ( www.getthemath.org ), includes streaming video, interactive activities, and content for educators. Get the Math (on-air and online) features hip-hop duo DobleFlo (Manny Dominguez and Luis Lopez), season two Project Runway winner Chloe Dao, and Julia Detar, developer of video games played on Facebook, showing how they use algebra in their work and then pose challenges relating to their work to two teams of teens.  Get the Math is a production of Thirteen in association with WNET.org, with funding by the Moody’s Foundation.  Get the Math is distributed by American Public Television.

4Kids Entertainment‘s long time Chairman and CEO, Alfred R. Kahn officially stepped down from his positions at the company and retired yesterday.  4Kids’ Board of Directors has appointed Director Michael Goldstein as the interim Chairman of 4Kids, while they search for a new CEO.  Under Kahn’s leadership 4Kids guided the licensing for properties including Nintendo, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Cabbage Pact Kids.  Explaining the move Kahn said, “After almost 25 years, I have reached the point in my career where I want to relinquish my responsibilities at 4Kids. The last several years have been particularly difficult and demanding with the business of 4Kids being buffeted by the financial crisis. After helping steer the company through challenging times, I have decided that it is the right moment for me to retire.”  Goldstein (69), who has been a Director of 4Kids since 2003, previously served as Toys “R” Us’ Chairman of the Board of Directors, (1997-2001), and as its Vice Chairman and CEO (1994-98).  Set to release the feature film Yu-Gi-Oh! 3D movie in the US next month, 4Kids currently has a kid-targeted Saturday morning programming block, Toonzai on CW 4Kids, on The CW, and operates 4Kids.tv and its new video portal Toonzaki.  Goldstein says that 4Kids is currently working on new licensing rights and TV right for several properties.  Meanwhile, the company continues to explore strategic alternatives, which could include a review of the capital structure of the business and the possible sale of all or a portion of its stock or business.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Director Debra Granik (Winter’s Bone) is set to make a new feature film based Swedish author Astrid Lindgren’s popular kid’s book series Pippi Longstocking, per LA Times.  The first Pippi book was published in 1945.  Over the years Pippi Longstocking has been adapted into a number of movies and TV specials.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Astra’s Family Channel (Canada) debuts its new on-air and online look, which features an always moving Family logo that bounces, floats and pops and an overall look designed to reflect the “energy” and the interests of the network’s K8-14 targeted audience.  The brand refresh comes simultaneous to the launch of Family Channel HD, a new free network now available to eligible customers of Bell Satellite TV and Rogers Communications who already subscribe to the Family Channel standard definition service. Family Channel HD is set to launch on Bell Fibe TV and MTS over the next few weeks.

Amberwood Entertainment inks a broadcast rights deal with SVT (Sweden) for its new 3D preschool series Rob the Robot (52×11).  Currently in production, Rob the Robot is commissioned by TVOKids (Canada).  SRC, Knowledge Kids, and Access are also onboard for the series, which has already received a second season pick up an additional 52 episodes.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Italy’s Atlantyca Entertainment inks a new licensing deal for its Geronimo Stilton property with De Agostini Editori.  Under the agreement De Agostini Editori will publish Geostilton Partworks featuring Geronimo Stilton and his family helping kids learn about geography through fun adventures and explorations.  Launched this month, Geostilton Partworks is comprised of 60 books, each focusing on a single country as Geronimo introduces them to important things about each country and its capital or a major town.

Beauty retailer, Sephora introduces two new lines at stores, one inspired by Fox’s series Glee and other based on Sanrio’s Hello Kitty.

  • Fox Consumer Products has teamed up with Sephora Americas to develop Sephora by OPI goes Gleek Chic, an exclusive collection of nail colors and based on Glee.  Set to be available from February 3 exclusively at Sephora stores in the US and Canada, the new collection will feature a limited edition range of 10 new nail color shades and three print nail design appliques.  Its debut of Sephora by OPI goes Gleek Chic will coincide with the special episode of Glee that will air following Super Bowl XLV on Fox.  The collection will include individual full sized colors and a six-piece mini-set collection that will feature exclusive colors only available through purchase of the set.
  • Sanrio enters into a deal with Sephora for the launch of Hello Kitty Beauty, which will be offered exclusively at Sephora beginning later this month.  The Hello Kitty Beauty collection presented by Sephora features a range of colors for lips, eyes and face, as well as nail polish, fragrance and an accessory collection including brushes, compacts and clutches, among other products.  Hello Kitty Beauty debuts with launch events and in-store promotions, windows and displays scheduled for March.  Also available will be a limited edition Swarovski crystal encrusted hand mirror and a molded Hello Kitty body-shaped case with brush set, only 100 of each item will be produced and will go for $350.00 and $495.00, respectively.  Additionally, Sephora and Sanrio are partnering with eBay to host an auction (live January 17-27) for fans to bid on trips to collection launch events three cities this year.  Proceeds from the auction will benefit Starlight Children’s Foundation.

The Pokemon Company International will support the debut of its two new games, Pokemon Black Version and Pokemon White Version, for Nintendo DS with a 14-city US tour.  The tour launches February 5, 2011 (running through March 20), a month before games the games will release on March 6.  Each two-day stop on the Pokemon tour invites kids/families to come and play the new games, attend a free screening of the new Pokemon feature-length film, Pokemon-Zoroark: Master of Illusions, a scavenger hunt, meet and greets with Pokemon characters, as well as other activities, contests, and a special Celebi character distribution at GameStop stores.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Cartoon Network Enterprises promotes Erik Resnick to VP/Home Entertainment and Peter Yoder to VP/Consumer Products for North America.  Both Resnick and Yoder will continue to report to Christina Miller, SVP/CNE.  Resnick, who joined CNE in 2001 and will remain based in Atlanta, will continue to mange the home entertainment content business for CNE, while also seeking new business opportunities for its brands.  In his new role, Yoder will continue to oversee CNE’s licensing business, with the expanded responsibility to include oversight of its internal retail development team. He joined CNE in 2006 as Director Hard Lines, and will continue to be based in NY.

Spearmark International, a UK manufacturer of kid-targeted licensed products, names Nikki Tompkins as its new Head of Product and Marketing.  Tompkins joins from Disney where she was Manager across a range of categories including melamine and lunch, gifting and home decor and accessories. She previously was a toy buyer at Mothercare.
