Cynopsis: Kids!
12/07/11

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, December 7, 2011, and this your first early morning briefing.

Amazon Publishing expands its publishing efforts in the kid’s arena with the announcement yesterday that Amazon.com inked a deal with Marshall Cavendish, a publisher of educational and consumer books and provider of classroom digital solutions, to acquire the 450+ titles of its US kid’s books business (picture books, chapter books and Young Adult novels), Marshall Cavendish Children’s Books (MCCB).  In addition to bolstering Amazon Publishing kid book foundation, the acquisition will also see the release of some of Marshall Cavendish Children’s Books titles as eBooks and other digital formats for the first time, as well as continuing to publish the books in print.  The list from Marshall Cavendish Children’s Books features a range of titles including The Night Before Christmas illustrated by Gennady Spirin, Three Little Tamales by Eric A. Kimmel, Chalk by Bill Thomson and Yellow Star by Jennifer Roy, as well as My Name is Not Easy by Debby Dahl Edwardson.  Amazon will publish the acquired titles under an imprint of Amazon’s New York publishing unit.

Japan’s Sanrio, which owns Hello Kitty, is on the verge of acquiring the Mr. Men and Little Miss brands from Chorion, per The Guardian.  The deal, should it be completed, is reportedly valued in the tens of millions of dollars, according to Sky News.  Chorion has been selling off its assets since earlier this year after the company’s failed efforts to renegotiate the entertainment rights company’s debt, which is estimated to be US $109+ million, and the resignation of Lord Waheed Alli and William Astor, the Chairman and deputy chairman, respectively.  The sale of Chorion and its individual assets is being run by DC Advisory Partners.   Following his exit from the Chorion, Lord Waheed Alli and his new company Silvergate Media, acquired the rights to Chorion’s properties The World of Beatrix Potter and The Octonauts.  The 51-year-old Sanrio said earlier this year that it would spend upwards of $380 million acquiring new properties in an effort to expand its portfolio.

LICENSING

Warner Bros. Entertainment and Universal Parks and Resorts confirm their new partnership to bring The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to Universal Studios Hollywood, as well as unveiling plans to significantly expand The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort, the latter of which opened in Orlando in June 2010.  No financial details or opening dates for the new attraction in Hollywood or expanded attraction in Orlando were announced.

The Collective, a management and production company, enters into a licensing deal with Rubies Costume Company for a line of costumes and accessories based on the popular web series The Annoying Orange.  The Joester Loria Group, the licensing agent for The Annoying Orange brand, brokered the deal on behalf of The Collective.  The Annoying Orange is the ninth-most-subscribed YouTube channel ever, with 2+ million subscribers.

Toronto’s Studio Licensing and New Jersey-based DOT Licensing have entered into a new partnership to represent and develop licensing programs throughout the North American market.  Studio will manage the properties in Canada and DOT in the US under single North American agency agreements.  Studio and DOT will share representation for Studio Licensing’s existing North American properties, Angel Cat Sugar, Lolligag, and Mix Master Final Force, while seeking additional kid and adult aimed properties to add to their portfolio.
