NBC’s A-list matchup of the 49ers and Patriots on Sunday drew 23.2 million viewers, for a 40% rise over last year’s equivalent game, according to Nielsen. That is good enough to rank as the network’s second most-watched SNF game this season. The game’s rating of 13.9/22 was also up 38% from last year’s Week 15 SNF matchup. Through 15 weeks, SNF on NBC is averaging 21.0 million viewers, with a 15-week household rating of 12.6/20.
On the Air
FOX Sports is bringing the world’s oldest soccer competition to live broadcast television, announcing that the FA Cup would soon be hitting the channel. The network will offer both a third-round match next month as well as the final in May 2013. The third-round match is slated for Saturday, Jan. 5 at noon, pitting English Premier League teams West Ham United and 11-time FA Cup champion Manchester United. Meanwhile, the FA Cup Final is set to air live on FOX, Saturday, May 11 at noon live from London’s Wembley Stadium.
ESPN entered a multiyear agreement with the NFL Players Association for the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, a college all-star game highlighting draft-eligible seniors. The 2013 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl will be shown live on ESPN2 on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 6p from The Home Depot Center on the campus of California State University Dominguez Hills in Carson. The deal will also include four hours of live coverage of the Collegiate Bowl practices on ESPNU on Thursday, Jan. 17. The 2013 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl marks the second edition of the all-star series and the first time the event will be carried by an ESPN network.
NBA TV announced that the channel wrapped up 2012 on a high note, with its 96-game regular season schedule and original programming scoring record ratings for the year. 2012 saw the network airing four of its top five most-viewed telecasts of all time, wrapping up its most-viewed regular season ever in 2011-12 with an average of 335,000 total viewers for game telecasts and a bump of 32% over the previous season, according to Nielsen. NBA TV also posted double-digit increases across all key demos including a 43% rise among Adults 18-34 and a 39% uptick among Men 18-34. Based on the calendar year to date, NBA TV’s primetime viewership is up 55 percent compared to the same period in 2011.
NBC Sports Group and Dial Global wrapped up its lineup of programming for the upcoming launch of NBC Sports Radio Weekends, a 48-hour programming block that will premiere on Saturday, Jan. 5. In addition to the already launched Safety Blitz with Rodney Harrison airing on weekends, NBC Sports Radio is also adding the likes of Brian Webber of NFL Network’s NFL AM morning show,Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated and NBC Sports, and Clay Travis, NBC Sports contributor and owner/contributor of OutKicktheCoverage.com. Other names in the mix include Newy Scruggs, Jason Page, Anita Marks, Jon Stashower, and Rob Simmelkjaer.
HBO Boxing is offering a holiday treat for boxing fans, lining up seven of the year’s best bouts later this month. Among the names in the showcase will be wins by Floyd Mayweather, Andre Ward, Sergio Martinez and Juan Manuel Marquez as well as breakout victories by rising stars Brandon Rios, Adrien Broner and Robert Guerrero. The action begins Christmas Day, with Floyd Mayweather/Miguel Cotto with all seven contests running over five consecutive nights, each starting at 11p.
Golf Channel is saying thanks to fans via a Viewer’s Choice lineup of shows tonight. Among the series on deck will be Legendary Conversation: Nicklaus, Palmer, Player, Trevino kicking it off at 8p followed by American Triumvirate and War by the Shore.
SPEED announced that Bob Varsha will serve as host of Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series race coverage on the channel beginning with the Rolex 24 at Daytona on Jan. 26 at 3p. Brian Till, Calvin Fish, Dorsey Schroeder, Tommy Kendall and Justin Bell will join Varsha in the booth. In the pits, SPEED will have Chris Neville, Jamie Howe, Matt Yocum and Andrew Marriott.
MSG Network’s Monday night telecast of the Knicks/Rockets game and the return of Jeremy Lin drew a 4.77 Nielsen household rating, to rank as the highest-rated Knicks game of the 2012-13 season for the channel. Spanning 18 Nielsen-measured games on MSG this season, Knicks telecasts are averaging a 3.41 household rating, up 85% over the first 18 games of the 2011-12 season.
Cartoon Network unveiled the first 10 voting categories and nominees for the third annual Hall of Game sports awards show, which returns to the channel in February with hosts Shaquille O’Neal and Nick Cannon. This year’s categories will include: Most Awesome Mascot, Alti-Dude (top alternative sports high flyer), That’s How I Roll (most stylish athlete), He’s Got Game (best male athlete), She’s Got Game (best female athlete), Dynamic Duo (best teammates), Gnarliest Newcomer (top rookie), We Got Game (best team) and more.

The NFL announced four new boot camps/training modules for current and former NFL players that will take place in April and May 2013, bumping the tally for the programs to 10. New programs will include: Franchising Boot Camp, Hospitality & Culinary Management Workshop, Sports Journalism & Communications Boot Camp, as well as a new Business Management & Entrepreneurship Program at Notre Dame. This year’s sessions begin with the NFL-NCAA Coaches Academy beginning Feb. 17 in Charlotte.
The NBA’s five new basketball-themed characters, the NBA Hoop Troop, are hitting the small screen with a new :30 spot that tells the story of the team saving two kids from a “boring, humdrum day.” The spot featured two young boys, Carter and Dylan, who are introduced to NBAHoopTroop.com that allows them to explore NBA content including games, videos, stats, scores and more. The ads will run through June on ESPN, TNT, NBA TV and Cartoon Network.
Georgia Tech Athletics locked in an extension of its current 14-year multimedia rights partnership with IMG College through June, 2021. Through IMG’s groundbreaking national collegiate marketing platform, heavyweight sponsors such as UPS and Lowe’s are now providing support to GT Athletics.
The Marine Corps is pulling out of its sponsorship with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, according to Stars and Stripes. The move comes months after Congress made a push to end all military sports sponsorships. The contract with UFC expired Nov. 30 and the money was assigned elsewhere, according to the report.
MasterCard and the PGA Tour signed off on an extension of their marketing relationship through 2016 that will focus on further offering MasterCard cardholders unique golf experiences, access to top PGA TOUR tournaments and properties, as well as golf-related savings and offers.
The Professional Bull Riders entered into a three-year extension of the sport’s partnership with Lincoln Electric. The partnership includes in-arena and chute signage, PA announcements, video board spots and tickets for Built Ford Tough Series events.
Telemundo announced the launch of its new Deportes Telemundo App 2.0for iOS and Android devices, designed to serve as a one-stop shop for sports news, scores, statistics and analysis. The new mobile app now offers info on leagues such as La Liga Espanola, English Premier League, Italian Serie A, Liga Mexicana, UEFA Champions League and the 2014 World Cup Qualifiers as well as clips of sports-themed shows such as Futbol Estelar, Titulares Telemundo, Titulares y Mas, Boxeo Telemundo, Ritmo Deportivo, and more.
