Cynopsis: Kids!
08.07.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 7, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP HEADLINES

As she steps into her new role as DreamWorks Animation’s first-ever Head of Television, former Nickelodeon exec Marjorie Cohn took some time to outline her vision for CynKids during her very first morning on the job.

What part of your new position are you most excited about?
DreamWorks is a company I’ve admired for a long time. The second I walked into the studio there was an energy that was palpable. Plus, there are massive closets of IP here that I can’t wait to get my hands on.

With so much IP, where do you start?
I’ll start with the movie releases–that gives you some structure. I can’t give any details yet but we have a bunch of projects queued up in various stages of development. There are some properties that feel like they are closest at this point, that just present themselves as ready.

The film Turbo is one such property DreamWorks is developing into episodes, via your distribution deal with Netflix.
The Netflix deal enables us to get the best talent and get into some long-range planning, which always makes for good development and production, because we don’t have to wait for a pick-up. DreamWorks movies are filled with such richness–there is always IP that’s left on the table and the television show enables us to get into the characters very deeply and have a lot of fun without having the arc and giant emotional story.

What’s your view on multiple distribution channels?
Multiple platforms can exist. Viewers want to find shows they like, and they are going to go every place to find them. We have a deal with [Germany’s] Super RTL and we will be looking to expand into non-Netflix territories.

DreamWorks has announced its film slate through 2016. Does this make your job easier or harder?
It gives it some structure, which I love. We’ll be developing cartoons and series around the movies where it’s appropriate and we can fill in with complementary stories.

There are a handful of sequels on the slateKung Fu Panda 3, How To Train Your Dragon 2, Penguins of Madagascar–and some other new opportunities including the Classic Media acquisition and purchase of the Trolls IP.
We are going to dig heavily into the Classic Media library. There will definitely be some things that stand alone as television. And if you look at Penguins of Madagascar these are side characters that are really funny, and Dreamworks developed them in a separate movie. That’s the kind of thing I was referring to when I said there’s a lot of IP lying around that we can build into a different world.

What’s the biggest lesson you took away from your 26 years at Nickelodeon?
Always think of the audience, the kids, first.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

Cartoon Network is revving up the RV for the premiere of Uncle Grandpa on Monday, Sept. 2, at 8p. The new animated series revolves around the wonder and joy everyone’s “magical” uncle/grandpa figure brings as he travels the world in a mystical RV, helping people. Eternally optimistic Uncle Grandpa finds unusual solutions to everyday situations–even if there was never an issue in the first place. The show was created by Pete Browngardt (Secret Mountain Fort Awesome), who also voices the eponymous character, and Audie Harrison (The Golden Compass) serves as creative director. Cartoon is trying out a new format with the new series. Each quarter-hour episode contains a main story, whimsical bumpers and an original short. Uncle Grandpa will also have a strong digital and social media presence including original games on CartoonNetwork.com and shareable GIFs for Facebook and Twitter.

It’s not always all fun and games on Nickelodeon. Nick News with Linda Ellerbee will premiere the half-hour special Family Secrets: When Violence Hits Home at 8p Tuesday, Aug. 13. The special focuses on kids around the country who have witnessed domestic violence in their homes and are speaking up about it. Nick News, produced by Lucky Duck Productions, is now in its 22nd year and is the longest-running kids’ news show in television history.

The half-shell heroes find themselves in their most desperate battle yet in “Showdown,” the season one finale Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, tomorrow (Aug. 8) at 8p., which features Roseanne Barr as the voice of the character Kraang Prime.

LICENSING NEWS

The first-ever Mister Maker apparel line based on the Zodiak Kids brand will launch in the U.K. in spring 2014 through a deal with child’s-wear specialist Paul Dennicci. The line will include t-shirts, hoodies and painting smocks. Zodiak has also renewed its licensing agreement with Dennicci for its Waybuloo line of babywear apparel.

Marvel Entertainment is teaming Mad Engine, Mighty Fine, Junk Food, Jem Hybrid, Bio World, Freeze and C-Life to unveil new styles of T-shirts, accessories, headwear and more to support future films Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor: The Dark World, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier and new animated series Marvel’s Avengers Assemble and Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., as well as the Spider-Man franchise, including upcoming film The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the ongoing Ultimate Spider-Man TV series. For its newest franchise, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (due in theaters this month), the company already has partnered with Hasbro, Disguise and Sideshow Collectibles and is seeking more licensing friends. The company also recently partnered with UnderArmour and Forever 21.

Platinum Films awarded its master toy license for Matt Hatter Chronicles to the Simba Dickie Group across EMEA, CEE, Russia and India. Simba will manufacture and distribute a toy range targeted at boys 510, including action figures, vehicles, role play items, play sets, remote control vehicles and die-cast.

PARTNERSHIPS & PROMOTIONS

All in the Family: Sprout is benefitting from some familial relations via co-marketing and cross-promos with some of its older NBCU siblings, including Bravo, E!, Oxygen, Syfy, USA and iVillage.  “These channels don’t typically have kids programming but they do have strong female, and strong mom audiences,” Sprout president Sandy Wax tells CynKids. The synergies are helping fuel Sprout’s longest active streak of audience growth in the women 18-49 demographic across all broadcast and cable networks at 21 consecutive months. The net kicked off the third quarter with its second best monthly delivery of women 18-49 in its history, with a total day average audience of 38,000 viewers.  Sprout’s July 2013 average was a 15% increase over its year ago July average of 33,000 viewers.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Resort operator Resorts World Genting is developing the first-ever Twentieth Century Fox theme park via a new licensing arrangement with Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products. Set to open in 2016, the new theme park at Resorts World Genting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, will immerse visitors in an entertainment experience featuring Ice Age, Rio, Alien, Night at the Museum and other brands.

Saban Brands and MarVista Entertainment licensed the latest installment of the Power Rangers franchise, Saban’s Power Rangers Megaforce, to Channel 5 in the U.K., where it will debut this summer. The series airs on Nickelodeon and NickToons in the States; the new season will officially debut at MIPJunior.

DHX Media secured a host of new deals across multiple platforms in Canada. The company renewed broadcast rights to animated series George of the Jungle with Teletoon Canada, and signed an agreement for seasons 1-3 of kids’ comedy Johnny Test. Additionally, French-language channel TFO renewed seasons 1-4 of DHX’s Caillou and nabbed exclusive rights for season 5 of the series… Telus Communications has secured SVOD rights to a raft of DHX Media properties including Angela Anaconda, Bo on the Go and Adventures of Paddington Bear for French-speaking Canada and Knowledge West has also picked up a package of DHX Media’s kids’ titles; and Rogers Media has picked up linear rights to air key DHX Media properties on City Saskatchewan for its preschool educational programming block.

U.K.-based Beyond Distribution will launch the Pipsqueaks brand at MIP Junior. Co-produced by Beyond Screen Production and the Seven Network Australia, the new preschool series is hosted by four funny furry puppet friends – Peppy, Sassy, Poppy and Squidge–who encourage kids to sing, dance, laugh and learn.

RESEARCH & DATA

Middle-schoolers are hip to using mobile devices and downloading apps, but 68% of them still need to get permission from their folks before downloading, according to a new study from Grunwald Associates. The study, based on a survey of about 1,000 families, also shows that kids as young as 3 are downloading content onto mobile devices. Additionally: 51% of high schoolers carry a smartphone to school daily, and 25% of all students K-12 carry a smartphone to school daily.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

David Levy has been elevated to president at Turner, one of several new changes at the home of Cartoon Network and Adult Swim as CEO Phil Kent prepares to step down at year’s end, with Time Warner CFO/CAO John Martin succeeding him. Levy previously was Turner’s president of sales, distribution and sports and now adds oversight of the company’s domestic entertainment and animation & young adults networks.

9 Story Entertainment has hired Jennifer Ansley in the new position of VP, marketing & communications. Ansley previously was VP of marketing for Phase 4 Films and director of marketing for Somerset Entertainment.
