Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 31, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Canadian-based TV and multiplatform creator/producer/distributor Shaftesbury ( ) grows its business with the launch of Shaftesbury US, a new division that will focus its efforts on developing content for the US.  Based in LA, Shaftesbury US will be co-helmed by veterans Tom Mazza and Maggie Murphy, both most recently from Cookie Jar Entertainment, who will report directly to Christina Jennings, Chairman and CEO, Shaftesbury.  Mazza joins Shaftesbury US from Cookie Jar Entertainment where he was EVP and Head/Worldwide Television.  He previously co-founded Madison Road Entertainment (MRE), and prior to that was President/Columbia TriStar Network Television, and was with Paramount Network Television for 12 years, ultimately serving as EVP/Creative Affairs.  Murphy was most recently SVP/Development, Cookie Jar Entertainment.  She was previously President of Kiefer Sutherland’s Eastside Entertainment, part of Fox.  Prior to that Murphy was SVP/Drama, UPN, where she worked on a range of series, and before that she was SVP during the start-up of Regency TV, and Director/Creative Affairs for David E. Kelley Productions.  Founded in 1987, Shaftesbury’s kid/tween/family productions include Life with Derek and the TV movie Vacation with Derek.  The company’s divisions include Shaftesbury Factual (non-fiction content), its digital media unit Smokebomb Entertainment (original online series and websites), and Shaftesbury Sales Company (international sales and distribution).


Neil Patrick Harris stars in a special episode of Cartoon Network‘s animated series Adventure Time, which is set to premiere this Labor Day, Monday, September 5, at 8p.  In the special episode, Harris lends his voice to Prince Bubblegum  and yes he sings.

CBBC (UK) will debut the new season of Live ‘n’ Deadly with hosts naturalist/adventurer Steve Backshall and kid’s TV host Naomi Wilkinson on Saturday mornings this September 2011.  The new season of Live ‘n’ Deadly (13×60 and three special episodes), which airs live, will follow Backshall and Wilkinson as they travel the UK and take part in adventures, challenges, dares and interactions with animals.  At the Live ‘n’ Deadly ( ) website, during the show and throughout the week, viewers will be able take part in unique interactive content and the popular Deadly Dash game.  Fans will also be able to play the new Deadly Dash 2, Deadly Scramble and Deadly Planet games, the latter where fans can track and film deadly animals and then spot a secret code on TV, online and the real world to unlock bonus levels and power-ups in the game.  Fans will also be able to attend the weekly Deadly Day Out educational event each Sunday, where they can meet the hosts and see various animals (free tickets will be available at and via phone).

Avrill Stark Entertainment and Flying Bark Productions‘ animated feature film, Santa’s Apprentice, will get a theatrical release in Australia on November 10, 2011.  The family-aimed movie revolves around the adventure of Nicolas, a 7-year-old Australian boy as he deals with the ups, downs and responsibility of being the next Santa Claus.  Directed by Luc Vinciguerra from a script by Alexandre Reverend, the movie is based on an original idea, characters and designed by Jan Van Rijsselberge.  Santa’s Apprentice is a co-production between Gaumont-Alphanim and Avrill Stark Entertainment, with the participation of Flying Bark Productions, Gaumont, Cartoon Saloon and, Orange Cinema Series, Centre National de la Cinematographie et de l’Image Animee, Bord Scannan na hEireann/Irish Film Board.  With the support of Departement de la Charente, de la Region Poitou-Charentes & la Region Ile-de-France.  Developed with the support of The Media Programme of the European Union.  Becker Entertainment distributes the movie, which debuted in France last year.

Tilapia SAS, an Italian producer of kids programming, and Germany’s Your Family Entertainment (YFE) ink a long-term worldwide distribution deal for a number of series.  Under the new arrangement, YFE will handle distribution for Tilapia’s series including Docucartoon, Giga & Sick, Healthy Living means Happy Living, and their new K6-12 targeted TV project The Little Edo (26×26).  The pilot of The Little Edo, currently in production, will broadcast this holiday season on RAI Uno (Italy).  The Little Edo revolves around Edoardo di Sansereno, who lives in 18th century Naples, and his fascination with European legends (many of the science related) that he reads about in his dads books that inspire him to set out on his own adventures with his friends to trace the story.  YFE will showcase the trailer for the new property at MipJunior this October 2011.

Disney’s Princesses are the stars of THQ‘s new Disney Princess: Enchanting Storybooks video game releasing November 1, 2011 for Nintendo DS/DSi and the uDraw GameTablet for Wii.  The new girl-targeted title features a range of stylus-based activities, such as number-painting stages, tilt-painting games, and coloring book pages that narrate the classic stories of the Princesses out loud, as well as sticker book activity mode, musical tune-up activities, and six unlockable magical tools.  Enchanting Storybooks debuts the new fairy character Opal, who is charged with coloring magical kingdoms every year  but when something goes wrong and she accidentally takes all the color away players must help her restore the color using the UDraw and Nintendo Ds stylus.  Appearing with the Disney Princess squad for the first time in a video game is Rapunzel from Tangled.

Majesco Entertainment and Hasbro are partnering to release Twister Mania for Kinect for Xbox 360 for holiday 2011.  A re-imagining of Hasbro’s classic Twister game, the Twister Mania digital game will also, like the original game, be a physical game for up to eight players at a time, with across three game modes and 16 variations and 1800+ shapes to play.

Cartoon Network teams with Hasbro to support the season four of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars with the launch of a special Fan Sweepstakes.  Currently underway, the sweepstakes (which has daily winners) will also include a sneak peek at the new season beginning Monday, September 5 on its web page at .  Season four of Star Wars: The Clone Wars premieres Friday, September 16 at 8p.
