Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 22, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

The Hunger Games continues to pay dividends for Lionsgate, which sold 3.8 million DVD and Blu-ray units of the film this weekend, in its first weekend of DVD release. More than one-third of the discs were in the Blu-ray format, which affords studios a higher margin. The film also racked up the most digital and on-demand buys in the studio’s history, Lionsgate said. It had the biggest first day sales for Lionsgate of any film on Zune Video on Xbox and more on-demand buys on Comcast in the past four years. The flick also set a record for Lionsgate on iTunes, the studio said. Those sales are in addition to the $407 million the film earned at the North American box office, as part of its nearly $700 million worldwide haul.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Cartoon Network nabs Matthew Broderick to voice a character in an episode of Adventure Time. He’ll play a new character dubbed “The Dream Warrior” in the Monday, Sept. 3 airing of the network’s animated series. The Dream Warrior is a used car salesman who advises the protagonists on defeating a rival. Broderick has said his son watches Adventure Time.

ABC Family launches a weekly Web series Pretty Dirty Secrets Tuesday August 28. The digital series is a companion to the network’s Pretty Little Liars and will run for eight episodes with new installments every Tuesday on ABCFamily.com at 8 p. The Web series will serve as a companion to the show and delve into the time between the summer finale and a Halloween episode of the show airing in October. The network will also introduce a new character in the Web series named Shana who will appear in on-air episodes in 2013.

Canadian kids network Teletoon introduces a hosted block for kids on Thursday nights for two hours starting at 6 p. Actress Andrea Jenna will host, starting with the premiere week Sept. 6 and each week that follows.

LICENSING

American Greetings Properties strikes a new licensing pact for the Strawberry Shortcake brand for a kids’ meal promotion in Asia with Jollibee. This month, Strawberry Shortcake premiums will be included in each Jollibee Kids Meal sold in all Jollibee stores in the Philippines and in Vietnam.

Programming producer and distributor Lawless Entertainment inks a deal to serve as worldwide representative for Constellation, a one-hour action adventure series. The show is set in 2031 on a drastically changed planet.

MARKETING

Kids and parents are still watching TV together, according to a new study conducted by Nickelodeon. The programmer surveyed parents and kids in 11 countries on family dynamics and purchasing decisions and found that 94% of kids and parents share the same taste in TV, 98% watch TV together, 79% share music taste, and 67% share clothing and shoes. About two-thirds of kids learn about brands from friends, while 63% hear about them online, and 57% from ads on TV. Interestingly, the ads on TV generate the most requests to buy the products advertised, Nickelodeon said.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney-ABC Television Group launches a puzzle game for iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches based on the Disney Channel Fish Hooks series. The game is free and available in more than 70 countries. The game features Milo the Fish and many of his friends from Freshwater High, Disney said. The characters will have to complete obstacle courses and make their way through mazes and other puzzles.

STONE SOUP

Toy company Nukotoys rolls out two new games with Animal Planet Wildlands and Monsterology. The toys are trading cards that are activated when tapped to the screen of an iPad, iPod touch or iPhone. The apps are free in iTunes, with packs of cards available to purchase at Apple stores as well as Toys “R” Us, Target, and Walmart.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Children’s consumer products company The Wish Factory Inc. names David Scher as Executive Vice President of Sales for the company. He has worked with brands including Hit Clips, Talkboy, Furby, WWE action figures, and Paper Jamz music toys.

RATINGS

Disney Channel said it’s on track to finish the summer ranking tops in total day in total viewers with 1.96 million and in kids 2-11 with 1.23 million. The network has won both demos for the past 11 weeks, Disney Channel said in its announcement.
