Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 11, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

CCI Entertainment, in partnership with First Star Studios and Fake Studio, are teaming up with TVO, SRC and the Bell New Media Fund to develop CCI’s new animated comedy/adventure series, Jerry and the Raiders, which features a mix of 3D motion capture and video game technology.  Targeted to K4-8, the series follows the adventures of Jerry and two action figures that come to life and work together to solve ecological mysteries and save Planet Earth from evildoers.  Jerry and the Raiders is created by Mark Shekter and Nancy Trites Botkin of First Star Studios.  Fake Studio will provide special effects and a range of character emotions for the series.


The musical Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark has a new Broadway home and dates, with previews set to begin at Foxwoods Theatre (known until this month as the Hilton Theatre) on November 14, 2010 at 3p and opening night set for December 21, per Playbill.  Directed by Julie Taymor, the musical features a book by Taymor and Glen Berger, and music and lyrics by U2’s Bono and The Edge.  The show stars Reeve Carney (movie version of The Tempest) as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, as well as Jennifer Damiano (Next to Normal) as Mary Jane Watson and Patrick Page (Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas!  The Musical, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King) as Norman Osborn/The Green Goblin.  The creative team also includes Daniel Ezralow as choreographer, George Tsypin as scenic designer, Eiko Ishioka as costume designer, Donald Holder as lighting designer, and Jonathan Deans as sound designer and Teese Gohl as musical supervisor.  Further information can be found at .


Cartoon Network will launch season three of the CG-animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars with a special hour-long premiere event on Friday, September 17, at 9p.  From Lucasfilm Animation, the new season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars is comprised of 22×30 episodes.  The third season will reveal secrets including the destiny of the Chosen One.  Additionally, LucasArts, a unit of Lucasfilm Entertainment, and Sony Online Entertainment will release the virtual world video game Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures, which lets players use customizable lightsabers and custom starfighters and features minigames, daily activities, events, rewards etc., online this September 15.  Clone Wars Adventures is a free-to-play game, but also offers a monthly membership subscription ($5.99) that allows members to purchase items via Station Cash micro-transactions.  Available at retailers in North America this fall, the Clone Wars Adventures Galactic Passport will include a 90-day membership, 500 Station Cash, and will also unlock the Togruta playable character, a Yoda monitor topper, among other things.

The fifth season of Curious George premieres Labor Day, September 6, 2010, on PBS Kids (check local listings).  The new season features a new character, 8-year-old Marco, who plays in his family’s pan-Latin band and will go on adventures with George as well as introduce him to Hispanic culture.  This season’s episodes are designed to help preschoolers learn about different cultures, modes of transportation and bartering.  Based on the Curious George books by Margret and H.A. Rey, the Curious George TV series is a production of Imagine Entertainment, WGBH Boston, and Universal Studios Family Productions.  National Corporate Sponsorship for the series is provided by Chuck E. Cheese’s, Sun-Maid Growers, and Rainforest Cafe.

Radio Disney and Disney Channel are providing fans with exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of the Jonas Brother Live in Concert tour via Radio Disney’s multiplatform short-form program Total Access, beginning this Friday, August 13, on-air, online and for mobile devices.  Several segments (about 90 seconds each) will run multiple times on Disney Channel, Radio Disney, online (including, as well as on Sirius/XM satellite radio, iTunes Radio Tuner, and for mobile devices, and via the Radio Disney iPhone app.  Macy’s and Nestle Juicy Juice Sparkling Fruit Juice Beverage have signed on as sponsors for the multiplatform program.  The concert tour features Jonas Brothers as well as Demi Lovato, who all star together in the upcoming Disney Channel’s Camp Rock TV movie sequel, Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, which premieres Friday, September 3, at 8p.

Decode Enterprises inks two terrestrial TV deals for Kid vs Kat in Latin America.  TV Azteca (Mexico) and ECTV (Ecuador) have picked up the first season of Kid vs Kat (26×22).  Disney XD (US), Disney XD (Europe) and YTV (Canada) recently commissioned a second season  (26×22) of the 2D animated series.  Additionally, Studio B Productions is producing a series of digital shorts (13×2) based on Kid vs Kat.  Decode Enterprises and Studio B Productions are both units of DHX Media.


Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books, publishes its first enhanced e-book, a movie tie-in for Castle Rock Entertainment and Warner Bros. new teen-targeted movie Flipped.  Based on author Wendelin Van Draanen’s book Flipped, the movie is directed by Rob Reiner and opened last week in just a few cities and will open nationwide on August 27.  The Flipped enhanced e-book ($14.99) includes an exclusive video feature about the making of the movie, including behind-the-scenes footage, interviews and eight clips from the movie, as well as three original songs written and recorded by Van Draanen.  Knopf Books for Young Readers will also publish a trade paperback version of the Flipped movie tie-in and a regular e-book edition ($8.99).
