Cynopsis: Kids!
04/04/12

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 4, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

CBeebies (UK) commissions The Foundation, a Zodiak Kids production company, to produce the new preschool series Let’s Play (26×11). Hosted by Sid Sloane (CBeebies’ Get Set Go and Big Fun Time) and a new female host (to be announced), Let’s Play is designed to encourage young viewers to explore and discover the world through creative role playing and dressing up. Each episode will see the hosts set out on a new adventure in an animated world where they take on the role of a colorful character and dressed up for the part, during which they will play and learn all sorts of things before heading back home. Let’s Play will be filmed in summer 2012 and will air on CBeebies later this year.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Vancouver-based Thunderbird Films teams up with New Zealand’s Flux Animation Studios and Ireland’s Telegael to co-produce the new CGI preschool series, Wiki The Kiwi (78×7). The series revolves around two very different friends, Wiki, a bird who cannot fly, and his best friend Brian the Bat, who can fly. The two take viewers on imaginative journeys to a place where being different makes you the same and everything the same can seem to be very different, and where nothing stays the same  unless you want it to!

Zodiak Kids signs a three-pronged international co-production deal for the 3D animated educational preschool series Quick, Quack, Duck! (52×11). Quick, Quack, Duck! will be created and produced by Zodiak Kids’ production company The Foundation in partnership with Korean animation studio High 1 Entertainment and Tel Aviv based QQD Limited, the creators of the original concept. A pop-up world that encourages imaginative creative play, Quick, Quack, Duck! features the adventures of an inquisitive seven-year-old boy named Remi and his loyal duck, Quack. In each episode, Remi and Quack use tabs, pulls and other devices to trigger pop-ups that create a surprising and interactive story. Based on a short film called The Happy Duckling, the Quick, Quack, Duck! series is been co-created by Yvette Kaplan (Ice Age, Beavis & Butthead) and Gili Dolev (The Happy Duckling). Zodiak Kids retains worldwide rights to the property.

DQ Entertainment (DQE) welcomes new production partners onto two of its new animated productions.

  • Signing on as co-production partners with DQE for the new 3D animated series Robin Hood are broadcaster TF1 (France) and Method Animation, as well as Minika TV (Turkey), ATV’s new kid-targeted network. TF1 will hold the broadcast rights for the Robin Hood series for France and French speaking territories.
  • DQE enters into a co-production deal with Gaumont Alphanim (Alphanim), France, the principal rights holders for the new 3D animated CGI TV series Lanfeust. Alphanim has acquired the rights for Lanfeust of Troy, a long running French language comic series written by Christophe Arleston, drawn by Didier Tarquin, and published by Editions Delcourt. Alphanim is producing the series and will handle all of the creative aspects. As co-producer, DQE will be responsible for animation production. Under their deal, Alphanim and DQE will share global territories, including France and other French speaking territories and backend revenues from all lines of income. French broadcasters M6 and Canal j are backing the series.

LICENSING

The European Licensing Company (ELC) releases a new line of Scooby-Doo books across Romania from new Romanian licensing partner kid’s book publisher Gama Publishing House. The new publishing line features a range of titles, including coloring books, activity books and reading books, as well as an educational series that focus subjects such as the animal kingdom, unusual occupations, great inventions, geography, and the universe. Gama plans to add to the line with new titles later this year. Scooby-Doo is hugely popular in Romania, where Scooby and those meddling kids can be seen on Cartoon Network.

American Greetings Properties, the intellectual property and licensing division of American Greetings Corporation, and CPLG France, Cookie Jar Entertainment’s European licensing arm, will showcase the iconic Strawberry Shortcake brand at the Kazachok Licensing Forum this month. American Greetings Properties, marking its first time at the Kazachok Licensing Forum, will introduce Strawberry Shortcake’s new best friend and musical star Cherry Jam, into the French marketplace. Further plans for the Strawberry Shortcake brand in France include a promotion with the Association d’Organisations de Production Nationale de Fraise (National Association of Production of Strawberries). Beginning this month through June 2012, a Strawberry Shortcake costume character will appear at strawberry farms throughout France to promote the berries, share recipes and interact with kids. The brand will also provide continued support to the nonprofit organization Toutes a l’ecole (All to School) to help raise funding for a new all-girls school in Cambodia through various Strawberry Shortcake-themed events. Additionally, all new content will be featured on the Strawberry Shortcake France website at www.charlotteauxfraises.fr. Since CPLG launched the Strawberry Shortcake licensing program in France, a wide range of licensing partners have signed on to the property across key categories including: Hasbro (toys); Hachette Jeunesse, Hemma, and Turbulences Press (publishing); D’Arpeje (outdoor toys, arts & crafts); Evasion (costume appearances); FOX and M6 (DVDs); Beautifair (back-to-school); Belltex (bedding); and Calego (bags, umbrellas); Corep (lighting).
