Disney teams with Tencent, China’s largest internet service provider, and the Ministry of Culture’s China Animation Group, to form a new partnership, The National Animation Creative Research and Development Cooperation, which aims to advance the China’s animation industry. The partnership unveiled in Beijing yesterday, will train local talent and develop original and local animated content for both China and the rest of the world. As part of the initiative, Disney will provide its expertise in storytelling from concept creation and story development to market research. Disney will work with the China Animation Group and Tencent to foster local content across mediums, including TV, motion pictures and digital platforms, for distribution in China and internationally. Tencent will provide online marketing support.

Cookie Jar Entertainment and Comcast Cable finalize a new licensing deal that provides kid-targeted programming from Cookie Jar’s library for instant streaming on Xfinity Streampix, Comcast’s new subscription video service that allows Xfinity video customers to instantly view movies/TV content in and out of the home to multiple screens and devices. Programming form Cookie Jar’s library available under the new pact includes Adventures of Paddington Bear, Archies Weird Mysteries, Busy World of Richard Scarry, Busytown Mysteries, The Doodlebops, Heathcliff, Inspector Gadget, Madeline, Sabrina, the Animated Series, Strawberry Shortcake, Super Mario Super Show, and Wimzie’s House. Later this year, the Streampix service will also make Cookie Ja’s content available on additional devices such as Xbox 360 and Android units.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Montreal-based Sardine Productions and co-production partner Gamerizon Studio, ink a deal with Teletoon Canada to develop a TV series based on the Chop Chop Ninja game universe. The Chop Chop Ninja game has been downloaded 5+ million times worldwide.  A second game, Chop Chop Ninja World, is in production and set for release in 2012. The series follows super ninja Iro who defends his town from evil overlords and their minions, while attempting to win the coveted title of Chop Chop Ninja. To create a transmedia experience the Chop Chop Ninja TV series and new game title will be linked in numerous. The project includes 52X11 episodes, 52X1 minute episodes as well as original web based material.

LICENSING

Wildbrain Entertainment, a producer and a DHX Media company, appoints Jazwares as the master toy licensee for its preschool property Yo Gabba Gabba! Under the deal, Jazwares will help expand the Yo Gabba Gabba! toy line by manufacturing, marketing and distributing a line of preschool toys based on the TV series, including figures and accessories, plush, playsets, vehicles and musical toys. Products will be available at mass and online retailers nationwide by early spring 2013. Yo Gabba Gabba! already counts 40+ licensees on its team in the US. Yo Gabba Gabba!, created by Christian Jacobs and Scott Schultz, is produced by The Magic Store and Wildbrain Entertainment, and airs daily on Nick Jr.

Atlantyca Entertainment names its first licensee in Korea for Geronimo Stilton the Animated Series. Asiana Licensing Inc. (ALI), the licensing agent for Geronimo Stilton in the territory, signs Bezzangi to manufacture and distribute a line of bed linens (duvets, mattress pads and covers, bedclothes, pillows, sitting mats, foot mats, cushions and aprons) based on the series throughout South Korea beginning in spring 2012.

Hallmark has launched its Hallmark Justin Bieber greeting cards at Wal-Mart stores nationwide and, beginning this May 2012, the Bieber card line will be available at Hallmark Gold Crown Stores and other retailers. The collection includes more than 48 Hallmark cards (cards com in various sizes and are priced $2.57-$9.99), some of which feature the singers songs (e.g. U Smile, Baby) or things such as lights, motion and pop-up displays. A number of cards double as collectors’ items with door hangers, photos inserts and the like. The Hallmark Justin Bieber line of greeting cards was developed by Hallmark and Bravado, a merchandise company that is part of the Universal Music Group.

Turner Broadcasting acquires a second season of Spain-based Vodka Capital‘s preschool 3D animated series Jelly Jamm (26×11) for its Cartoonito channel in EMEA. Jelly Jamm (season one, 52×11) premiered in 2011 for the rollout of Turner’s preschool channel Cartoonito across EMEA, which reaches 125 million homes in 112 countries.

Seven Network (Australia) acquires the mixed 2D/3D animated series The Woodlies (26×24), which it will air Saturdays at 10a from May 5  November 24, 2012. Targeted to K6-11, The Woodlies is based on the popular novel No Cookies for Trolls by noted author Cornelia Funke (The Inkworld Trilogy including Inkheart, Inkspell and Inkdeath; The Thief Lord, and others) and published by S. Fischer Verlag. Produced by The Woodlies Pty with the assistance of Australia’s Flying Bark Productions and in association with Ireland’s Telegael Teoranta. The series is produced with the support of the investment incentives for the Irish Film Industry provided by the Government of Ireland. Financed in association with Screen NSW.

Teletoon (Canada) will premiere the second season of the kid-targeted animated quiz show Skatoony on Sunday, April 22 at 11:30a.  Produced by marblemedia, the new season of Skatoony will also get a sneak peek with a special episode airing Thursday, April 19 at 7:30p, during Teletoon’s Can’t Miss Thursdays programming block. Online, the first phase of a multiplatform launch for season two of Skatoony features new updates to Skatoony Home Game on Teletoon.com, including a new look, new downloads and upgraded elements including social features, new game levels, among other things.

In its ongoing effort to nurture Southeast Asian animators and identify and develop new original ideas, Cartoon Network Asia‘s Snaptoons, a program designed to identify the next generation of cartoon heroes, today announced three finalists from Singapore and the completion of two animated shorts from Malaysia. The three short-form program finalists from Singapore were selected based on the originality and creativity of the concept and the key criteria of being character, are 101 Ways: The World by Sabreena Shanu, Maxine Starr Last Vanguard of the Zodiac by Kane Wheatley-Holder, and DNA  Definitely Not Animals by Dreamforest Animation. Production on the three shorts expected to be completed by 2014. The completed shorts from Malaysia are Blox Brigade (1×4) by Unizaru and Ziro The Wizard…In Training (1×10) by Tomato Animation. Snaptoons is supported by Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA) and MD3C from Malaysia.

Writer/director/producer Chris Weitz (The Twilight Saga: New Moon, The Golden Compass, About A Boy) has set his sights on writing a post-apocalyptic young adult book trilogy for Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, which is a unit of Hachette Book Group, per Entertainment Weekly.  The first title in the trilogy, The Young World, is slated for a spring 2014 release.
