Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 10, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Today’s Top Headlines
We’ve got kids news covered for you daily during Upfront season…

Bazooka Bubble Gum is launching its first television ad campaign in five years to support the massive relaunch of the brand. The campaign will air across networks including CW Kids, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Disney XD and will branch into digital territory as well. The TV spots, developed by Flint & Steel, depict kids in otherworldly situations such as spying on teachers wrestling each other in the staffroom, and conclude with the tagline “Absurdly Good.” Besides driving purchase, the spots also direct viewers to the brand’s new content site, Bazooka TV that includes unique entertainment and gaming content.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

Nicktoons has given the thumbs up to the 26-ep season two of Rob Dyrdek’s Wild Grinders, the Home Plate Entertainment animated series that launched last year on the network. Home Plate is also producing a collection of brand new digital shorts to complement the existing library of more than 25 shorts and interactive games for broadcasters to use on-air, on-line, and on the go. Aside from its U.S. support, Nicktoons plans to debut the series in Europe and Latin America later this year. Wild Grinders also launched on Liberty Global’s Chellomedia & Zon Multimedia owned Panda Biggs (Portugal) and Gloob (Brazil). Home Plate appointed Elastic Rights and Mondo TV to handle the property in southern Europe and Middle East, respectively.

Busy day for Moonscoop. Moonscoop and Shemaroo Entertainment are bringing the world’s most renowned cricket player, Sachin Tendulkar, to the small screen in a new 3D CGI actioner called Master Blasters. Tendulkar, the record-breaking Indian player with a career spanning 25 years will be starring as his animated persona in the new kids series… Additionally, Moonscoop will begin working with Australia-based Wandering Eye Pictures to co-produce animated series Southside Shaolin, an animated series about the granddaughter of a Shaolin master who gets thrust into western culture when she’s sent on an education exchange.

Astral Media’s Family Channel is giving the green light to a second season of its original reality-style series The Next Step. Principal photography for the dance show, which follows a troupe of elite dancers and is produced by Temple Street Productions, will begin this summer. The series debuted March 8 to Family’s largest premiere audience for any series with an unprecedented 574,500 viewers tuning in (P2+ AMA).

This week’s You Rule Thursdays (April 11) fan-selected programming block on The Hub will feature favorite plane, train and automobile-themed episodes from shows including Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley and Who’s the Boss?.

LICENSING

American Greetings’ outbound licensing division AG Properties is picking a basketful of new deals for Strawberry Shortcake via its international licensing agent, Copyright Promotions Licensing Group. In Italy, Edizioni Play Press will introduce activity books and coloring books at mass retailers; RCS Libri SPA is planning a line of books; and Multiprint will launch stationery and arts and crafts items under the brand Uva Fragola. Copyright Promotions also secured a deal with Nestle Italiana SPA for Easter and chocolate eggs branded Perugina. This is the first slice for Strawberry Shortcake in Italy for this product category.

Gwyneth Paltrow will deliver the keynote address at Licensing Expo 2013, June 18-20 in Las Vegas. Her presentation, “Brands on the Brink of Global Expansion,” will touch on her work as founder of digital media company Goop.com and co-owner of the Tracy Anderson brand.

CYNKIDS SPOTLIGHT

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, perfect timing for the new “Arrive in Style” campaign from Conde Nast pub Teen Vogue and Toyota. The campaign developed in partnership with Toyota’s ad agency Dentsu America–comprises print, digital and social media elements and will run through February 2014. Its hook? Raising awareness of the dangers of distracted driving among teenage girls and their mothers. The approach is based in part on a recent study by Toyota and the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, which found a significant correlation between teen and parent driving behaviors, suggesting that parents are a major influence on a teen’s driving habits. What are you doing to address this important issue? Let me know at [email protected]!

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Global kids publishing and media company Scholastic is bolstering its U.K. team with two key appointments. Samantha Smith joins as fiction publisher, from her most recent post as editorial director at Little Brown. Rachel Partridge comes aboard in the newly created role of group marketing and publicity director. Partridge most recently was at Universal Pictures.

Michael Lynton has extended his contract as head of global entertainment for Sony Corp. The company declined to disclose the length of the renewal. Lynton, who joined Sony Pictures in 2004, currently serves as CEO of Sony Entertainment Inc., and chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Cox Communications SVP, content acquisition, Bob Wilson will retire at the end of the year after a 34-year run at the company. Wilson, who joined Cox in 1979, said, “I believe cable has a great product and a bright future and I’ve fought to protect the value of it for our customers. Despite some tough negotiations, the thing I will miss most is the relationships with programmers, peers, partners and colleagues.”

Lakeshore Entertainment has hired Todd Olsson as SVP of Lakeshore International. Olsson will help lead the company’s revamped global digital strategy.
