This week marks the launch of PBS Kids Go! Digital Citizenship Initiative, which features a suite of new resources designed to help kids and parents steer their way through the digital world. The initiative includes the debut of the new interactive game Webonauts Internet Academy ( www.pbskidsgo.org/webonauts), which is free, aims to educate kids about online privacy, how to deal with bullying and identify credible online sources. Supporting information for parents can be found at PBSParents.org ( www.pbsparents.org ), which includes Common Sense Media‘s tips for kids’ internet use. The debut of Digital Citizenship Initiative coincides with National Cyber Security Month and National Bullying Prevention Month, both in October.
Time Warner’s CNN, People Magazine and Cartoon Network are partnering to combat bullying with a special multiplatform report in October, coinciding with Bullying Prevention Month. CNN will air an Anderson Cooper one-hour town hall special, Bullying: No Escape; an AC 360 Special Report with People Magazine and Cartoon Network, Friday, October 8 at 10p. Leading up to Cooper’s town hall, Anderson Cooler 360, in conjunction with People Magazine will feature a weeklong series on bullying, from Monday, October 4 at 10p. People Magazine will feature a bullying package in its October 18 issue, available on newsstands on October 8. Cartoon Network has pledged its long-term commitment to the initiative Stop Bullying: Speak Up, which launches Monday, October 4. Additionally, Service Administration’s Stop Bullying Now campaign features on-air PSA that direct kids and parents to CartoonNetwork.com for online resources from the network’s new Bullying Prevention Advisory Board. NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Director/Producer Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth) selects DreamWorks Animation as the new home for his animated feature films. DreamWorks Animation has acquired del Toro’s Trollhunters (working title), an original project that will be produced in 3D, and which del Toro will write and direct. Del Toro will now serve as an Executive Producer on Puss In Boots, along with Andrew Adamson and Michelle Raimo, which is slated for a November 4, 2011 release. Additionally, del Toro will consult on various DreamWorks Animation feature films, which according to THR include Kung Fu Panda 2, Megamind, and an unnamed project.
CCI Entertainment enters into a co-production deal with Australia’s Galaxy Pop for the animated series Get Ace (26×30). CCI will handle worldwide distribution and licensing for Get Ace. Created by Galaxy Pop, Get Ace is a comedy that follows the adventures of Ace McDougal, a 12-year-old nerd who goes to get her brace and is accidentally fitted with a set of high-tech spy braces. Network Ten (Australia) recently picked up the series. The series will be featured at Mipcom.
MORE KIDS STUFF
The Pokemon Company International unveiled further plans for Pokemon. The company revealed that 2011 will include the worldwide debut of the 14th season of the Pokemon animated TV series (title TBA) as well as the release of the 13th Pokemon movie (title also TBA). The new Pokemon movie will feature two new characters from the new Pokemon Black Version and Pokemon White Version video games for the Nintendo DS systems, which are set to release in spring 2011. The games have already been released in Japan where they became the fastest selling DS games ever in the country. The Pokemon Company will attend to discuss opportunities for the new series with existing and potential partners.
Following reports that the BBC had canceled the popular CBeebies series In the Night Garden, a co-production between BBC and Ragdoll Productions, BBC Worldwide issued a statement saying that the “rumors of its [In the Night Garden’s] demise are premature.” Neil Ross Russell, MD/Children’s Global Brands and Licensed Consumer Products, BBC Worldwide explained, “BBC Worldwide and Ragdoll, with the full support of Kay Benbow, Controller of CBeebies, are actually in the process of developing exclusive new content which will se the characters continue in a variety of different formats.”
Portfolio International‘s series The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That has been acquired by Zebra TV Channels’ preschool-aimed Hop! Channel in Israel. Based on Random House’s Beginner Book collection The Cat in the Hat Learning Library, the series features Martin Short as the voice of The Cat. The series is produced by Collingwood O’Hare Productions and Portfolio Entertainment in association with Dr. Seuss Enterprises, Random House Children’s Entertainment, Treehouse and PBS Kids. The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That is already airing on Treehouse (Canada) and PBS (US) and is set to debut on CITV (UK) and on various Playhouse Disney channels worldwide.
Little Airplane Productions completes further deals for The Olive Branch (26×1), a short-form film preschool series produced by Little Airplane’s new non-profit Little Light Foundation ( www.littlelightfoundation.org ). Picking up The Olive Branch is Disney Australia, British Forces Broadcasting Service Television, Canal+ Multithematiques (France), SVT (Sweden), OXO (Macedonia), NRK (Norway), and WorldKids Foundation (India). The series focuses on two characters that live in the same olive tree and each episode must find ways to resolve their differences and get along. The Olive Branch debuted on June 1, 2010 on Nick Jr. in the US, with an exclusive six-month window for the first three episodes, as well as on a non-exclusive on Nickelodeon networks globally. The series has also been acquired by KidsCo Worldwide. Little Airplane is offering the series broadcasters for one unit of their own currency per episode, though broadcasters are invited to make tax-deductible contributions to help cover production costs. The series is endorsed by Deepak Chopra, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the Simon Wiesenthal Center and UNICEF.

The PBS Kids series Curious George ( www.pbskids.org/curiousgeorge) partners with Time For Kids magazine to bring content from the educational magazine to kindergarten and first grade classrooms nationwide. Each month beginning October 2010, Curious George will be featured on the cover of a Time For Kids Edition K-1 magazine. Inside the issues will include an activity page base don the month’s educational theme, hosted by Curious George. For example, the October issue features George’s exploration of “Transportation and Maps.” The remaining six monthly issues for the 2010-2011 school year will cover sorting (math), shadows (physical science), ramps and rolling (physics), wind (earth/space science), cooking (math), and games around the world (social studies). Additionally, the teachers guide for each issue will include a reproducible worksheet featuring Curious George, which teachers can send home with students and is also available at www.timeforkids.com/tfk/teachers/bp .
Turner CN Enterprises acquires the licensing and merchandising rights for the new preschool HD TV series Puppy in My Pocket (52×11). Under the deal, Turner CN Enterprises becomes the licensing agent for the property in Europe, Middle East & Africa (excluding Italy, Spain and Greece). The first licensed products will be available at retail in 2012. The Puppy in My Pocket TV series is a co-production between Mondo TV, MEG, which created the property, and Giochi Preziosi. Puppy in My Pocket will debut in 130+ countries across EMEA beginning next year.
Cartoon Network and Hasbro are teaming up for a Star Wars: The Clone Wars content and toy promotion for holiday 2010. Customers that purchase Hasbro’s specially-marked Star Wars: The Clone Wars toys, with on-pack codes, and will be directed to CartoonNetwork.com/secretcode ( www.cartoonnetwork.com/secretcode ), where they unlock bonus show content from the season three launch, printables and other digital downloads. The promotion will run through March 2011.
DQ Entertainment (DQE) appoints Sweden-based Plus Licens AB as the licensing merchandising agent for The Jungle Book in a three-year deal across Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Russia and several other countries in Eastern Europe. Plus Licens plans to market The Jungle Book merchandise and books simultaneous to the TV broadcast of The Jungle Book series beginning in early 2011, broadcast and distributed by ZDF TV and ZDF Enterprises.
Atlantyca Entertainment attends Brand Licensing Show 2010 this week where it will showcase its Geronimo Stilton as well as other properties. Atlantyca is seeking licensing partners for a number of key properties including Geronimo Stilton Animated series, Geronimo Stilton Classic, Tea Sisters, Le Petit Prince, and Funny Face.
The Topps Company names Staci Weiss as Head of Entertainment. Based in LA, Weiss will work to expand Topps into the entertainment and media business including the company’s brands Bazooka Joe, Garbage Pail Kids, Wacky Packs, Dinosaur Attacks, MechWarrior, Shadowrun and Attax. Additionally, she will also be responsible for identifying and building new properties. Weiss will report to Topps’s CEO Ryan O’Hara. Weiss was previously SVP, 19 Television. Prior to that she toiled for Fox for six years.
