Cynopsis: Sports

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 8, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Burger King Corp. locked in a three-year partnership with CBS Sports and Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. that will make the Burger King brand the official quick service restaurant partner of the NCAA. As an Official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, the restaurant brand will look to connect with fans via a year-round marketing program with sponsorships of all 89 college sports championships, including the NCAA Men’s Final Four. The corporate partnership includes media, merchandising and on-site event opportunities, and allows the chain to utilize all NCAA trademarks and logos. The partnership will kick off this fall with local franchisees gearing up to activate programs across the nation. The deal was brokered by Starcom USA.

On the Air

While the Broncos/Cowboys game proved to be a doozy on the field, the ratings packed a punch as well. CBS Sports’ Week 5 coverage of The NFL on CBS on Sunday, which was anchored by the Denver game, earned the highest rating of the NFL season-to-date on any network with an average overnight household rating/share of 18.6/34 in the metered markets, according to Nielsen. That also marks an 18% increase over last year’s window. The game’s rating/share also ranks as the highest-rated program on television in the metered markets since the 2013 Academy Awards.

Through 11 telecasts as of Sunday, TBS’ coverage of the 2013 MLB Postseason is averaging a 2.3 household rating, according to Nielsen, up 5% compared with a 2.2 score in 2012.  The network’s average of 3,482,000 total viewers is up 2% over last year. Sunday’s doubleheader averaged 3,174,000 total viewers and a 2.0, up 19% and 18% over the comparable Sunday telecasts a year ago.

CBS Sports and CBS Sports Network revealed their 2013-14 college basketball season broadcast schedule, with 240 total games in the mix, including six men’s Conference Championships, and match-ups from 20 different conferences. CBS Sports Network will carry over 200 games, starting Friday, Nov. 8 at 9p with USC at Utah State. CBS Sports hits the court on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 12:30p with UCLA/Missouri. Championship Weekend on CBS Sports tips off on Saturday, March 15 and Sunday, March 16, 2014, featuring the Big Ten, Conference USA, Mountain West and Atlantic 10 conference tournament championships.

HBO, Sports Illustrated and Endgame Entertainment are producing Sport in America: Our Defining Stories, a documentary that will run on Thanksgiving Day, Nov., 28 at 6p. The special will look at how the “universal thread of sport unites us as a people and has shaped America’s character.” The presentation includes interviews with Billy Bob Thornton, Mike Tyson, Steve Kerr, Frank Deford, David Maraniss, Ron Shelton, Curt Menefee, Michele Beadle, Summer Sanders, Jerry Reinsdorf and others.

Golf Channel tees up for Long Drive Month starting tomorrow at 9p with four straight weeks of Wednesday primetime coverage of the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship. The network will dedicate more than 20 hours of programming to the art of hitting it long and showcasing the personalities that compete in a sport where the golf ball regularly travels in excess of 400 yards. Golf Channel’s coverage will showcase the men and women who compete in long drive, beginning with grassroots local and regional qualifying, and culminating with the finals where eight finalists will compete for a winner-take-all $250,000 prize. In addition, NBC will air a 60-minute recap show of the entire event in December.

CBS Sports announced its selections for its SEC on CBS doubleheader games for Saturday, Oct. 19. The opener will feature Georgia and Vanderbilt at noon, while the later game will see Auburn visit Texas A&M at 3:30p..

Universal Sports Network entered a multi-year agreement with Verizon that will make the network’s Olympic, endurance and adventure sports programming available to Verizon FiOS TV subscribers across the country. Verizon now offers Universal Sports HD on channel 596. Universal Sports HD is available to all customers as part of Sports Pass, and available in all FiOS TV markets, including metro New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Boston, Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia.

NBC Olympics will slated to offer a record 34.5 hours of live coverage of the 2014 U.S. Olympic Trials across NBC, NBCSN and NBC Sports Live Extra in the months leading up to the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Coverage will center around six sports  speed skating, short track, hockey, ski jumping, Nordic combined and curling. Trials coverage begins on Friday, November 15 at 3:30p on NBCSN with curling from Fargo, N.D., and wraps up on Sunday, January 5 at 4p on NBC with short track from the Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns, Utah.

The UFC is hitting movie theaters nationwide for its PPV on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 10p. UFC 167: St-Pierre vs. Hendricks marks the promotion’s 20th Anniversary event. Sponsorship & Promotion

NBC Sports is out of next year’s Shooting Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show, according to multiple reports, after sponsoring the show for multiple years. An NBC Sports rep told Variety that “Our level of sponsorship has varied each year, and this January we will not be sponsoring the show because it does not make business sense for us at this time.”

WWE is partnering with Totino’s for an integrated partnership around the brand’s pizza rolls. The alliance will give fans a chance to win prizes, including a trip to a WWE event, a meet and greet with a WWE star, copies of the WWE 2K14 video game and more.

ESPN Radio’s Mike & Mike launched a contest encouraging listeners to tune in for a daily “winning word or phrase” that could lead to exclusive prizes – including an all-expenses paid trip to Hawaii. The six-week campaign kicked off yesterday and encourages listeners to call, text, tweet or visit espnradio.com, registering with the winning word of the day. The promotion runs through Friday, Nov. 15.

Leigh Steinberg announced the formation of Steinberg Sports & Entertainment with an eye to represent present and future NFL, NBA and MLB players and coaches, as well as entertainers and other public figures. Steinberg has negotiated more than $2 billion in player contracts, and helped to generate over $600 million for local and national charities. The agency is backed by a Texas-based investment group and will look to include athlete and entertainment client representation as well as sports and entertainment marketing, media consulting and special projects.

Digital & Technology

The USA TODAY Sports Media Group is teaming with CineSport for a content and technology partnership that will see CineSport provide its video technology platform-the VaMP video platform-and create custom sports video content for properties within the USA TODAY Sports Media Group. Through the agreement, CineSport and USA TODAY Sports will also co-produce original programming for distribution through CineSport’s VaMP platform with the ability to distribute across hundreds of destinations within both the CineSport and USA TODAY Sports universes.

Learfield Sports introduced LiveU as its newest Preferred Solutions Provider and will now provide the company with access to the more than 50 institutions and associations Learfield Sports represents. According to the release, the pairing also “paves the way for volume discounting for Learfield partner schools and an unprecedented opportunity for them to stream more live content via the schools’ official digital platforms including websites and mobile applications.”
