In an effort to reach a combined audience of 100 million viewers per month, Yahoo! and ABC News announced yesterday that ABC News will become the primary news content provider for Yahoo!. As part of the agreement, the editorial teams from ABC News and Yahoo! News will work together to create original web series and other branded premium news content. Furthermore, the two companies will look into offering advertising solutions. The alliance begins with the debut of GoodMorningAmerica.com, an online hub of information for fans of the program, and three new online video series, including Newsmakers, an interview series that also debuted yesterday with Good Morning America host George Stephanopoulos’ interview of President Barack Obama, which was streamed live on Yahoo.com and ABCNews.com.
As part of its upcoming connected TV app launch, Swiss-based HDTV and VOD live concert channel iConcerts has announced distribution deals with Samsung, Toshiba Europe, LG Electronics, Philips and Panasonic. The manufacturers will bring the iConcert VOD service to multiple platforms including TV, BD/DVD players, set-top boxes and tablets. The iConcerts connected TV app will be available in Europe, Middle East and Asia upon release.
The Associated Press will stream its AP Television News Direct service on digital platforms for the first time through a new partnership with Streamworks. Previously only available via satellite, the live breaking news streaming solution is now available as of yesterday on customizable desktop, online and mobile apps.
NBC is expanding its current agreement with LiveU, a portable video-over-cellular solutions provider, to include coverage of the 2012 U.S. presidential race. LiveU’s technology, which has been previously used by NBC to cover the Beijing Olympics, uses multiple cellular links in order to allow for the transmission of live video from any location.
Cable & Wireless Communications has chosen Avail-TVN, a digital media services company, to use its AnyView multiplatform video service for LIME, CWC’s Caribbean subsidiary that provides telecommunication services for 14 Caribbean countries. As part of the deal, Avail-TVN will offer 130 live TV channels, along with VOD content, for customers to access via set-top boxes and connected devices.
SocialSamba, a new social networking platform for scripted characters, has launched with three initial customers, USA Networks’ Psych and Covert Affairs, and Warner Bros. feature film, Dolphin Tale. SocialSamba gives its clients the opportunity to create interactive stories that directly engage fans with characters from TV shows and movies. An example of the platform is the recent #HashTagKiller web story arc for Psych.
Crowd Science‘s CITRUS, an integrated audience measurement, segmentation, targeting and ad effectiveness tool, launched yesterday at the 2011 IAB MIXX Conference and Expo in New York. The platform has already secured partnerships with Scripps Networks, the NHL, Cox Media Group, Investing Channel and Martini Media to be its first users.
USA Today and Facebook have announced a joint partnership to launch the “USA Today – Facebook Super Bowl Ad Meter” online and mobile application. The app will allow users to view, rate and share Super Bowl Ads on Facebook and the results will be made public after the game. The app will complement the Super Bowl Ad Meter real-time focus group program that has been hosted by USA Today since 1982.
Hulu Ad Swap is a new digital offering from the video site that allows users to essentially trade the ad that they are watching for one that they find more relevant to their interests.
During the IAB MIXX Conference and Expo yesterday, the IAB Mobile Marketing Center of Excellence unveiled two initiatives to support the rising tablet advertising market: the “First Tablet Buyer’s Guide for the U.S. Mobile Marketplace,” which seeks to help marketers understand and take advantage of the rise in tablet use amongst consumers; and “A Call for Submissions for the IAB Tablet Creative Advertising Showcase,” which looks to put a spotlight on the best tablet advertising programs via an interactive gallery that is scheduled to be launched later this month.
Yesterday at MIPCOM in France, VisualOn announced that Netflix will use VisualOn’s software to power its app for the Android operating system.
Two new Nielsen reports, “Reaching the Right Audiences Online” and “Beyond Clicks and Impression,” have some interesting revelations about audience reach and effectiveness measurement of online ads, such as:
- Online campaigns are consistently delivered to people who are not a part of the intended audience.
- Campaigns with high impressions only manage to reach a small percentage of the intended audience.
- Online is more effective than some popular TV shows in delivering audiences.
- Click-through rates are not a strong measure of brand impact as there is almost no correlation between click-through rates and brand opinion or offline sales.
- However, brand metrics for online campaigns can predict offline sales.
Shaftesbury, in conjunction with its digital media division, Smokebomb Entertainment, announced the launch of “Totally Amp’d,” a mobile app series targeted towards kids between 8 to 14 years of age. The series, about the formation of a music band, combines live-action seven minute episodes with interactive elements such as the ability for users to remix songs, direct their own music videos and design outfits, posters and album covers. The app will be available for purchase via iTunes in November 2011.
Spreecast is a social video platform that lets up to four people broadcast a live stream to an audience. The live videos are also recorded so they are immediately available for playback. The service was just recently launched in beta.
Victor Kong is joining the Cisneros Group of Companies executive team as Vice President of Digital Media. Based out of the company’s headquarters in Miami, Kong will be responsible for designing and developing business strategies for new digital ventures and will report to President & COO Miguel Dvorak.
thePlatform, a white-label video publishing company and independent Comcast subsidiary, has appointed Michael Horwitz as its new Vice President of Engineering and Tina Santos as the In-House General Counsel. Mr. Horwitz will be responsible for core product development and the company’s operational business ingelligence, while Ms. Santos will oversee all legal matters. Both will be based out of Seattle.
Stephen Riome will be the new Managing Director at On Demand Group, a SeaChange Company that develops and manages the on demand businesses of numerous service providers including Virgin Media in the U.K. and SFR Neuf in France. He will oversee day-to-day operations and profitability of the company’s global business and will also be responsible for adding new clients to ODG’s content processing and third party promo production business.
PubMatic has hired Kirk McDonald as President, which is a newly created position within the ad management and monetization technology company.
