Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 2, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Netflix makes its Just for Kids section available on iPad, the first mobile version of its kid-targeted streaming content area. Kids and parents can now browse and instantly watch programming for kids 12 and younger by selecting just for Kids in the upper left hand corner of the Netflix application on their iPad. The Just for Kids section is commercial and ad free. In addition to iPad, Netflix Just for Kids is available on PCs and Macs, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Apple TV and certain Smart TVs, Blu-ray players and streaming media players. Other devices, including Android-powered tablets, are scheduled to launch later this year.

LICENSING

Hallmark partners with teen pop singer/songwriter Cody Simpson to launch a line of Cody Simpson greeting cards. Set to launch in January 2013, the collection is comprised of 40 different greeting cards, including 3D cards and Cards with Sound. Additional Cody Simpson products will be announced soon. The announcement comes as Simpson’s new album, Paradise, releases today. Hallmark and Simpson worked together earlier this year for the debut of Hallmark’s Text Bands, interactive wristbands that allow kids to trade messages by bumping fists or shaking hands.

US-based Dimensional Branding Group (DBG) taps Lisle International as its exclusive licensing agency for the Fight My Monster (www.fightmymonster.com) brand in the UK and Ireland. Lisle will work in partnership with DBG, Russell Binder of Striker Entertainment and the Fight My Monster team to expand the boy 8-12 targeted online game brand in the UK, where it launched.

Rocket Licensing completes new licensing and promotional deals for the preschool property Driver Dan’s Story Train in the UK. Driver Dan’s Story Train is a 3Line Media production in association with twofour54 Abu Dhabi, and created by author and illustrator, Rebecca Elgar. Avanquest Software, a developer of innovative consumer software, is using Driver Dan imagery, branding and content to create and publish a Nintendo DS and PC activity collection of 12-15 mini games, which will debut later this month. Additionally, Thomson, a UK tour operator, inks a two-year promotional deal to feature Driver Dan at its Thomson Family Resorts, all 19 of which offer childcare and entertainment. Toddler Time, Thomson Family Resorts’ parent and toddler sessions, will be themed around Driver Dan, which continue to be popular on CBeebies (UK). Little kids and grown-ups can take part in games and activities based on the adventures of the Driver Dan and his pals, further enhanced by toys, books and train sets as well as promotional material and special gifts.

MARKETING

Online kids channel Toon Goggles (www.toongoggles.com) has launched its premium subscription-base service. Toon Goggles will continue to offer users limited content for free, which includes an option to watch up to three episodes from its content library for free, including free access to all educational programming. The new Premium Service subscription is available for $4.99/month. Subscribers can enjoy a 30-day free trial granting them unlimited access to the full library of entertainment and educational cartoon series and feature films. Toon Goggles will be releasing hundreds of new episodes along with its Premium Service.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Breakthrough Entertainment and Little Airplane Productions team to launch the new original mixed live-action/animated series The Adventures of Napkin Man (13×30 or 26×11). Designed to help preschoolers tackle everyday challenges through age appropriate humor and original music, the series features Mister Anthony, a preschool teacher who draws a superhero named Napkin Man for his students. Napkin Man then comes to life in an animated world and helps kids deal with their feelings. Breakthrough Entertainment will produce The Adventures of Napkin Man, and the recently launched Canadian animation studio Little Tugboat Productions, led by Brenda Nietupski, will render animation services on the series. The first broadcaster to sign on for the series is CBC (Canada), which developed the show with Breakthrough, and will launch the series in September 2013. Little Airplane Productions’ Tone Thyne and Josh Selig created The Adventures of Napkin Man, and the studio will handle US distribution. Breakthrough Entertainment will introduce the series to the international market at Mipcom 2012 next week.

The Hub TV Network (US) acquires the new animated series Sabrina: Secrets of A Teenage Witch, starring Ashley Tisdale (High School Musical, Phineas and Ferb, among others) as the voice of Sabrina. Currently in production, The Hub plans to premiere the new original series in summer 2013. Moonscoop and Archie Comics have also teamed with new co-productions partners, DSK Group India, Laughing Lion (India) and Telegael (Ireland) for the new animated series, which features a modern updated adaptation the popular Sabrina the Teenage Witch character. Writer Dean Batali (What’s Up Warthogs, That 70s Show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) serves as story editor and Trevor Wall (Hero:108) will direct the series. A classic Archie Comics character and this year marks the 50th anniversary of Sabrina’s debut in Comics.

Amberwood Entertainment names Entertainment One Family (eOne) as the international distributor for its new 2D animated holiday TV special The Magic Hockey Skates. Based on the book of the same name, the special is produced by Amberwood Entertainment in association with CBC (Canada). The Canada Media Fund is providing financial assistance for the special.

Rive Gauche Television, Sea World Parks & Entertainment and Litton Entertainment partner to launch the series Sea Rescue (39×30) internationally. Rive Gauche will showcase the series next week at Mipcom. Sea Rescue features stories of the rescue, rehabilitation and return to the wild of marine animals by SeaWorld’s team of veterinarians and animal care experts, with the help of partner organizations. Sea Rescue can be seen in the US as part of Litton’s Weekend Adventure, a Saturday morning programming block on ABC stations.

Indie distribution company Echo Bridge Entertainment will make the 12 season of the teen drama Degrassi, yes it includes the 300th episode, available to international buyers at Mipcom next week. Produced by Epitome Pictures, season 12 of Degrassi (40×30) premiered this summer on TeenNick (US) and MuchMusic (Canada). The 300th episode, entitled Doll Parts, Part One, will premiere on October 25. Previous seasons of Degrassi can currently be seen in 130+ territories.

Spain-based BRB Internacional completes sales for its new short-form animated series Zoobabu (104×2), which features 3D stereoscopic riddles, with TV broadcasters including Disney (Japan), Canal+ (France), RAI (Italy), Pixel (Ukraine), Discovery Kids (Latin America), Minika (Turkey) and Al Jazeera (Middle East). France’s Orange has also picked up the series for different territories. Additionally, The series will be released in “Open broadcast-format” on Canal Clan-TVE (Spain) next month. Co-produced by Screen 21, Televisio de Catalunya and Image In, Zoobabu features 100+ animated riddles – there are some about 104 different hidden animals inside a playful box that kids can find through a guessing game, clue-by-clue. Zoobabu is currently airing on Canal Panda (Spain), and the series was previously acquired by channels including Minimini (Poland), RTV (Slovenia), Hop! Channel (Israel), Disney (Australia and New Zealand), Canal 9 (Costa Rica), Radio Canada and Knowledge (Canada).

Eight-year-old Women in Children’s Media (WiCM) re-brands to become Children’s Media Association (CMA), which also includes the launch of a new website (www.cmanyc.org), and a broader range of resources and forums. Additionally, Sesame Workshop signs on as a new partner to support CMA’s expansion. The first event hosted by the rebranded CMA will be a puppetry workshop with noted puppeteer John Tartaglia (Johnny and the Sprites) on October 10, 2012.

SMC Entertainment Group grows its licensing team with the appointments of Kristen Zimmer as Licensing Director and Lisa Berlin Wright to handle promotions and partnerships. In addition to being a licensing/brand management company, SMC Entertainment is the brand owner of The Jungle Book. Zimmer, who has toiled in licensing, brand and product management for 14-years, has worked in retail and consumer goods for companies including Spin Master, MGA Entertainment, Viacom Consumer Products and PetSmart. Wright, who specializes in strategic licensing and promotional partnerships, previously headed worldwide licensed corporate promotional tie-ins for Universal Studios’ theatrical and TV properties. Prior to that, she oversaw all promotional and merchandising activities for Spelling Entertainment properties. Wright has also developed campaigns for brands such as Atari Games, Fox, IMG, and Belinda Carlisle, among others.

Children’s Media Association (CMA, f/k/a Women in Children’s Media) appoints new members to its Board of Directors including: Jocelyn Christie, VP and Publisher/Kidscreen; David Kleeman, President/American Center for Children and Media; and Nicole Goldman, SVP/Marketing & PR, The Jim Henson Company.
