Cynopsis: Sports
10/02/12

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 2, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

NBC Sports had a lot to celebrate on Sunday with a one-two ratings punch featuring the Ryder Cup and Sunday Night Football. A European miracle comeback capped 17 hours of Ryder Cup coverage on Golf Channel on NBC over the weekend and delivered the best overnight rating for the final round in 13 years. The channel drew a 4.1/9 for the last day of the event to mark a 71% boost over the last Ryder Cup in 2010, according to Nielsen. On SNF, a down-to-the-wire Eagles victory over the Giants later registered a 15.6 overnight rating and a 25 share, up 23% over last year’s Week 4 SNF game and the best overnight rating for a Week 4 primetime game in 16 years.

On the Air

Saturday’s college football ratings saw ABC’s Ohio St./Michigan St. game take the day with a 3.6 overnight score, according to Nielsen. The next highest rated game was a tie between FOX’s Texas/Oklahoma St. encounter and CBS’ coverage of Tennessee/Georgia, both with a 2.8. ABC’s Wisconsin/Nebraska matchup was next with a 2.6.

On that note FOX Sports Media Group made its college football selections for FOX and FX for Saturday, Oct. 13. FOX Sports will program a Pac-12 contest featuring Utah/UCLA at 3p. Craig Bolerjack, Joel Klatt, and Petros Papadakis will call the action from The Rose Bowl. Then at 7p, the channel will offer USC/Washington with Gus Johnson, Charles Davis and reporter Julie Alexandria handling broadcast duties. On FX, the network will feature Kansas State/Iowa State at noon.

CBS Sports announced its SEC on CBS football game for Oct. 13, with top-ranked Alabama facing Missouri at 3:30p. Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson will call the game, along with reporter Tracy Wolfson from Memorial Stadium in Columbia, Mo.

ESPN’s telecast of the first-day matches in the 39th Ryder Cup on Friday, September 28, set records as cable’s highest-rated and most-viewed telecast of the event. With 11.5 hours on deck, the channel drew a 1.5 household rating with an average of 1,679,359 viewers, according to Nielsen. The highest previous Ryder Cup first-day average cable rating on record was a 1.6 on the USA Network for the 2004 event. That telecast averaged 1,394,064 viewers.

BTN is set to debut two new original programs next week beginning Wednesday at 7:30p with the premiere of The Journey: Big Ten Football 2012, presented by Best Buy. The first episode will feature Michigan’s Denard Robinson, Ohio State’s John Simon and Penn State’s Michael Mauti. Big Ten Elite debuts at 8p Tuesday and offers viewers the complete story behind seven great football and basketball squads, and why they are among the conference’s elite teams of all time.

Longhorn Network locked in its slate of basketball games for the upcoming season, with a total of 22 set to air on the channel this season, including nine men’s games and 13 women’s contests. Rounding out the network’s basketball coverage will be two weekly shows with men’s head coach Rick Barnes: Longhorn Weekly with Rick Barnes and Game Plan with Rick Barnes. The action tips off on Nov. 9 with a men’s game featuring Fresno St./Texas.

NBA TV brings back NBA Real Training Campon Thursday, Oct. 4, at 11a for its 10th season. The first episode will feature the Hornetsand top draft pick Anthony Davis getting ready for their home opener against the Spurs on the network Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 8p. NBA TV host Rick Kamla and analyst Steve Smith will anchor the day-long, behind-the-scenes coverage from Hornets training camp in New Orleans.

CBS Sports Radio drafted Scott Ferrall to serve as host of the network’s weekday evening program, running from 10p-2a. Ferrall on the Bench “will take listeners through the day’s headlines and most talked about topics in sports, generate spirited discussions with callers, and conduct captivating interviews with a variety of special guests.” Ferrall joins CBS Sports Radio from SiriusXM where for the past seven years he has hosted “The Scott Ferrall Show.” The network makes its debut on Jan. 2.

The Southland Conference has extended the contract of Commissioner Tom Burnett through June 30, 2016, the league announced yesterday. Burnett is now in his 10th year as the conference’s chief executive officer.

ESPN Radio is set to offer live coverage of Adam Greenberg’s first Major League at bat in more than seven years during Tuesday night’s Mets/Marlins game. Greenberg first made his MLB debut with the Cubs on July 9, 2005, but was hit by the first pitch and hospitalized. The Marlins received approval from Commissioner Bud Selig to sign Greenberg to a one-day contract, and ESPN Radio has received permission to go live to Greenberg’s one at bat in the game. The cut-in will probably occur sometime between 7-10p.

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team Foundation named Dave Morin as a trustee for the organization. The Co-Founder and CEO of Path, Morin at 31, becomes the youngest trustee to the board, in spite of his accomplishments. Morin grew up in Montana where he was a USSA Junior Olympic alpine ski racer and is the grandson of Amos “Bud” Little, a former president of the USSA.
