Toronto-based Radical Sheep Productions (Stella and Sam, Yub Yubs, The Big Comfy Couch) acquires the rights to the graphic novel series Fangbone! Third-Grade Barbarian, by author/illustrator Michael Rex (Goodnight Goon, The Runaway Mummy). Under the deal Radical Sheep will develop a K6-11 aimed animated series based on Fangbone! The story revolves around Fangbone, a nine-year-old barbarian warrior from Skullbania who winds up in third grade at Eastwood Elementary in order to save his native land from the evildoer Venomous Drool. With the help of his new pal Bill, a lovable, average, goofy kid, Fangbone outwits his enemies while discovering the modern world.

Spooky Cool Labs, a new producer of branded mobile and social games, inks a license deal with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment to develop and publish a new adventure, city-building online social game based on the classic movie The Wizard of Oz. The deal grants Spooky Cool Labs (www.spookycool.com) the use of the movie’s characters, music and likenesses, including Judy Garland as Dorothy and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West. Closed beta testing on the new social game has begun. Folks who want to learn about becoming a tester can “Like” the game’s new App Page at www.facebook.com/thewizardofozgame. Spooky Cool Labs licensed the cross-platform game engine, Unity, to develop the game.
Rocket Licensing signs five new UK licensing partners for The World of Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The deals were completed at Brand Licensing Europe in London by Rocket Licensing and worldwide agent for the property The Joester Loria Group. The new UK licensees are: designer/manufacturer/wholesaler Wild and Wolf (gifts, homewares, accessories); Dennicci (kid and baby-wear); Kiddie Rides (themed kid-aimed coin operated rides); William Lamb Footwear (footwear); and Universal Cycles.
CreaCon Entertainment, a Norway-based kid’s TV production company, extends its licensing deal with MEI to include live events and theater worldwide shows for its preschool property, City of Friends. The appointment adds to MEI’s current oversight that includes management of all City of Friends mini-shows and character appearances across Asia, Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East. CreaCon launched its new live show, City of Friends Live: Mystery in Friends Forest (90 minutes), based on its TV series, in Norway in September 2012. MEI were partners in the development of City of Friends Live, as well as the City of Friends stage show that in Dubai earlier this year.
Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) and TV1 (Portugal) finalize a new content deal for a range of Nickelodeon programming, which will feature a new co-branded programming block and feature the network’s new CG animated series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Together TV1 and Nickelodeon have developed the new Kid Kanal 2-hour block, which will also include properties such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer and Fanboy & Chum Chum, as well as Kung Fu Panda and Winx Club. Kid Kanal will air on TV1 Saturdays and Sundays beginning this November 2012. TV1 holds 27% of Portugal’s market and airs primarily locally produced programming.
Elsewhere, VIMN and CNBC-e (Turkey) received a Nickelodeon programming block renewal. The new deal includes new seasons and episodes of Dora the Explorer and specials, Fairly Odd Parents, iCarly, Kung Fu Panda, Legend of Korra, Penguins Of Madagascar, SpongeBob SquarePants, Planet Sheen, T.U.F.F. Puppy and Fanboy & Chum Chum.
The fifth season of Galli Galli Sim Sim, the Indian co-production of Sesame Street, returns this month on Doordarshan National where the series airs Saturdays at 9a. The new season of the educational series centers on early learning skills including sharing and caring, new words, eating and healthy living, anti-pollution, as well as showcasing the culture and diversity of India. A co-production between Sesame Workshop and Turner Entertainment Networks Asia, Galli Galli Sim Sim can also be seen daily on national cable channels Pogo and Cartoon Network. Sesame Workshop India manages the Galli Galli Sim Sim initiative in India and spearheads all outreach projects. Michael and Susan Dell Foundation (MSDF) is the primary funder of our outreach activities along with MetLife Foundation and Schwab Charitable Trust and HSBC.
Australia-based Beyond Distribution and educational channel Astro TVIQ (Malaysia, Indonesia) inked a kid’s programming package deal for Asia coming out of Mipcom. Under the deal TVIQ acquires 16 kid-targeted series (230+ hours of programming) including Kid Detectives, Toybox, Get Squiggling!, Buzzy Bee & Friends, Milly Molly, Lab Rats Challenge and Wild Animal Baby Explorers. Additionally, TVIQ renewed its deal for Backyard Science.
Fox International’s BabyTV channel completes new sales and renewals of its original programming across Easter Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
– Pixel TV (Ukraine) makes its first deal with BabyTV, acquiring a package of BabyTV shows for its free-to-air channel, including series such as Charlie & The Numbers, Cuddlies, Draco, Hungry Henry, Oliver and Tulli.
– Renewing broadcast agreements and refreshing content packages for daily branded BabyTV programming blocks are English language learning channel JCTV (Korea), Yoyo TV (Taiwan), VTV3 (Vietnam) and the Fox channel (Middle East).
– Qatar Airways extends its license deal to include more BabyTV VOD programming via its in-flight entertainment system.
Ganz, creator of Webkinz World, expands the Webkinz brand with the introduction of Webkinz Friends, a new kid and parent aimed, free-to-play, social game app for the iPad. Designed to encourage families to work together to play and build their own Kinzville, the interactive town where the Webkinz pets live. The free-to-play version of the social game was introduced to the teens and adults on Facebook earlier this year, and now younger kids can play with the app. The Webkinz Friends game app, which does not require purchase of a Webkinz pet, allows family members of all ages to play together across platforms and register their toys in the game and brings them to life and to send prizes from the tablet to Webkinz World. The gaming experience can be further enhanced by registering a Webkinz pet in both Webkinz Friends and Webkinz World for virtual prizes, which can be sent from the Webkinz Friends game to Webkinz World accounts without disclosing personal identity or information.
Big Idea Entertainment releases a new game app, VeggieTales: The League of Incredible Vegetables App. Based on its superhero themed DVD of the same name, the app was created by Big Idea Entertainment and partner Thruster, the social gaming and entertainment division of Bottle Rocket Apps, for iPhone and iPod touch ($2.99), iPad ($4.99), and Android devices, beginning exclusively on Amazon Android Kindle Fire ($2.99) – to be followed by a wider Android market release on Google Play. Targeted to kids 4+, the VeggieTales: The League of Incredible Vegetables game app features touch-based controls and invites players to help save the town of Bumblyburg in 28 different levels, during which they can collect Courage Coins that can be used to unlock 60 powers and upgrades. The app includes interactive scenes featured in the DVD.
