Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 22, 2013, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Welcome to Leadership Lessons, the column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the TV world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys and how that informs what they look for when hiring new employees. Today, meet Mike Henry, CEO of Outrigger Media, offers his view on what it really means to be a leader.

What was your first leadership position?
Well, you can lead from whatever role you’re in. If you wait to lead before someone tells you to, you’re probably too late. In a more linear answer to the question, I ran ad sales at The Wall Street Journal for a number of years. It was a time for setting the vision, and participating in that vision by being both a player and a coach.

What do you know now that you didn’t know then?
The smaller you are in company size, the more gratifying the success feels. “There are thousands of people who work [at the WSJ] and contribute to that success, so its hard to know how much you actually impacted things.” When you’re at a launch – I started Outrigger four years ago – or you’re working with 100-200 people, it’s much easier to see the connection between what you did and what actually happened because of your work.

If you could be in any profession other than the one you are in now, what would it be?
I would be a charter airline pilot flying small planes to somewhere warm. I’m actually a pilot now, but doing it as a full-time job would be fun.

Fox Networks President of Distribution Mike Hopkins is joining Hulu as CEO, reports Bloomberg. Hopkins would replace interim CEO Andy Forssell.

Laureen Ong is stepping down as President of Travel Channel at the end of the month. “I feel my mission at Travel Channel is complete,” Ong said in a statement from the network. Scripps Network President Burton Jablin will serve as interim overseer.

Lauren McGuire was promoted to Senior Vice President, Client Services and Brand Development at Man Made Music. McGuire had been Vice President.

Jonathan Sarrow has been named CBS Senior Vice President of Television Network Distribution. Sarrow had been VP of Distribution for Fox.

David Bernath was promoted to Executive Vice President Programming and Multiplatform Strategy at Comedy Central, and Steve Grimes was upped to the newly-created position of Senior Vice President, Multiplatform Strategy and Development, part of the net’s effort to unify its TV, online and mobile platforms.

Toronto-based 11 Television Canada has tapped Phil Hutchins to serve as Vice President, Production. Hutchins moves over from Primevista Television.

NBCUniversal named Maggie McLean Suniewick its Senior Vice President, Strategic Integration. Suniewick most recently was Vice President, Programming for Comcast Cable.

Scripps Networks Interactive upped Mark Kroeger to Executive Vice President and Chief Communications Officer. Kroeger had been Senior Vice President of Communications and Investor Relations.

Bravo Media promoted Christy Dees to Vice President, Development. Dees had been Director of Development.

FremantleMedia Kids & Family Entertainment President Sander Schwartz is stepping down. “I have decided it’s time for me to take on a new challenge,” said Schwartz in a statement.

Carat Global has hired Sanjay Nazerali as Chief Strategy Officer. Nazerali had been Global Director of Marketing, Communications and Audiences at the BBC.

In an executive reorganization, Thinkfactory Media‘s Joanne Rubino has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Production, Adam Freeman to Creative Director, and Aaron Fishman to Executive Producer. Rubino has been with the company for 13 years, Freeman since 2006 and Fishman since 2012.

Fox International Channels appointed Christian Barcellos Vice President of its new lifestyle and reality division, effective next month. Barcellos had been Vice President of Production and an Executive Producer at Bravo.

Josh Lieb is joining Late Night with Jimmy Fallon as producer, replacing Amy Ozols. Lieb had been Executive Producer at The Daily Show.

Louise Holmes has been appointed Vice President, Programming of Comedy Central U.K., effective November 25. Holmes is currently Head of Marketing at BBC.

Steve Berger and Scott McHugh join newly formed Patriot Media Group, a division of US International Media. Berger will serve as President, and McHugh as Vice President/Client Services.

Mike Hopkins has been named CEO of Hulu.A Hulu Board Director since 2011, Hopkins has served as President of Distribution for Fox Networks Group, a division of 21st Century Fox, since 2008. Andy Forssell, who has served as acting CEO since March 2013, is leaving the company.

Neeraj Khemlani and George Kliavkoff have been promoted to Co-Presidents of Hearst Entertainment & Syndication. Both will continue their current management roles with Kliavkoff overseeing Hearst Ventures and Khemlani heading the Digital Studios.

Revolt TV has named trends expert Jake Katz its Vice President of Audience Insights and Strategy. The music network founded by Sean Combs is set to launch on October 21 on Comcast and Time Warner Cable in top markets nationwide.

Time Warner Cable has named Jeffrey Painting as Senior Vice President and Chief Sales Officer, Business Services.  Painting last served as President of Business Sales and Care at CenturyLink.

Media veteran Cheah Chee Kong (CheeK) has been appointed Head of Content, Creative and Marketing of Asia Pacific for Scripps Networks Interactive, Inc. CheeK was a founding member The Group Entertainment and Executive Vice President of Creative.
