Cynopsis: Sports
10.01.13

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 1, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

A looming standoff between DISH and The Walt Disney Company got a temporary reprieve yesterday when the companies reached a short-term extension to continue carriage of ESPN; Disney Channel; ABC owned stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Houston, Raleigh-Durham and Fresno; ABC Family and other networks from The Walt Disney Company. The carriage deal was set to expire at midnight.

On the Air

The 2016 NBA All-Star Game is heading north, and will take place in Toronto and mark the first time the league held its showcase weekend outside the US. The game and peripheral contests will be anchored at the Air Canada Centre, home of the Raptors. In 2016, the All-Star competitions will tip off on Friday, Feb. 12, with the Sprint All-Star Celebrity Game and the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge.

TBS launches the 2013 MLB Postseason with the network’s Wild Card presented by Budweiser pitting the Cincinnati Reds at the Pittsburgh Pirates in the National League Wild Card Game tonight at 8p. On Wednesday, Oct. 2, the Cleveland Indians host the winner of the Tampa Bay Rays/Texas Rangers tiebreaker. Ernie Johnson calls the NL game with analysts Ron Darling and Cal Ripken and reporter Craig Sager. Brian Anderson offers commentary for the AL game with analysts John Smoltz and Joe Simpson and reporter Rachel Nichols. The LDS will see Johnson, Darling and Ripken take the Dodgers/Braves series, Dick Stockton and Bob Brenly handle the Wild Card/Cardinals games, Don Orsillo, Dennis Eckersley and Buck Martinez handling Tigers/Athletics and Brian Anderson, Joe Simpson and John Smoltz taking the microphone for the Wild Card/Red Sox.

Around the dial, ESPN announced plans for multiplatform coverage of the MLB postseason across ESPN, ESPN Radio and ESPN.com. Baseball Tonight will anchor the coverage with nightly telecasts throughout the postseason led by host Karl Ravech. ESPN Radio enters its 16th consecutive MLB postseason tonight beginning with the Wild Card games. Dan Shulman and analyst Orel Hershiser will call the National League Wild Card game, the NLDS between the Dodgers and Braves, the NLCS and the World Series. Jon Sciambi and Chris Singleton handle the American League Wild Card game, the ALDS between the AL Wild Card winner and the Boston Red Sox, and the ALCS. Dave Flemming and analyst Rick Sutcliffe call the NLDS between the NL Wild Card winner and Cardinals while Michael Kay and analyst Aaron Boone take on the ALDS between the Oakland Athletics and Detroit Tigers.

The postseason is bumping the week 5 NFL game pitting the Chargers/Raiders on Sunday, October 6 to 8:35p where it will air on NFL Network and on Westwood One as well as local stations. The game was originally set for an afternoon kickoff but with the A’s hosting a game on Oct. 5, there wasn’t enough time to convert the field.

The NFL Today crew is hitting the road with analysts Bill Cowher, Boomer Esiason and Shannon Sharpe leaving the studio on Sunday, Oct. 13 to hit the broadcast booth to call a game involving their former teams. Cowher joins Jim Nantz and Phil Simms to call the game between the Steelers and Jets. Esiason teams with Kevin Harlan and Solomon Wilcots to call Cincinnati/Buffalo and Sharpe returns to Denver for the Jacksonville/Denver game. Host James Brown, Dan Marino and Insider Jason La Canfora will anchor the studio with CBS Sports Network analysts Bart Scott and Amy Trask.

The 2012-13 NBA Coach of the Year George Karl is heading to TV, where he will join ESPN as an NBA analyst. As part of the multi-year deal, Karl will offer analysis for various studio shows, including SportsCenter, NBA Coast 2 Coast, NBA Tonight and other news and information programming. He will debut on the 11p edition of SportsCenter on Saturday, October 5.

ESPN is prepping for the 2013-14 NBA season with 31 original vignettes on top NBA storylines that will run throughout the 31 days of October. The vignettes will focus on a different storyline each day and start today on SportsCenter and ESPN/com’s NBA section. Stephen A. Smith narrates the first vignette, which focuses on the defending NBA Champion Miami Heat and their chances of a three-peat this season.

ESPN is set to offer the WNBA Finals 2013 Presented by Boost Mobile pitting the Minnesota Lynx and the Atlanta Dream starting Sunday, Oct. 6. Ryan Ruocco, Rebecca Lobo and Holly Rowe take on microphone duties while Carolyn Peck offers analysis from Bristol.

CBS Sports made its pick for the SEC on CBS football game for Saturday, Oct. 12 at 3:30p, choosing Florida/LSU. Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson will call the contest, along with reporter Tracy Wolfson from Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, La.

Around the dial, FOX Sports unveiled its own matchups slated for FOX and FOX Sports 1 on Saturday, Oct. 12, anchored by a Oregon/Washington on FOX Sports 1 at 4p. On the broadcast network, the channel will showcase Baylor/Kansas State with coverage starting at 3p.

USA Hockey will reveal its roster for the Winter Olympic team during the NHL’s Winter Classic broadcast on January 1 on NBC. Each country is allowed to choose 25 players, up from 23 from the last Winter Games.

ESPN’s E:60 airs its 100th episode tonight at 7p with a look at Bushwacker, the top-ranked bull at the Professional Bull Riders. The seven-year-old has had 11 outs in 2013, and ranked as the high-marked bull of the event 10 of those 11 times and set a new record of 42 consecutive bull riders tossed to the dirt. Wright Thompson profiles the animal in the episode.

NBC Universal has locked in $800 million in advertising for the 2014 Winter Olympics, according to Ad Age, marking a new record for the event. The network told the publication that with local support its total might approach $970 million for the Sochi games, which is slated for Feb. 7 to 23, 2014. First time buyers include Liberty Mutual and BP, along with returning stalwarts Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble, McDonald’s, Visa, AT&T, General Motors, BMW, Citibank, Kellogg’s and General Electric.

Pfizer Consumer Healthcare inked a deal with the NHL to make Advil an Official Partner and the Official Pain Reliever of the NHL and the 30 NHL athletic trainers in North America for the 2013-14 season. Under the agreement, Advil will also be an Official Partner and the Official Pain Reliever of the 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic and the 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series.

Catalyst, an IMG Consulting Company, released results from its annual Fan Engagement Study, and found that nearly 70% of sports fans who “like” or follow brands on social media are willing to take additional action, including purchasing, commenting or sharing brand content. Fielded by REPUCOM in August 2013, the survey drew data from more than 2,100 avid sports fans aged 16 – 64, with takeaways that included:

  • While Facebook remains the most widely used channel, fans are increasingly using Google+ and YouTube to disseminate and acquire sports information
  • Fans frequently engage with content that advances story lines or provides a point of view
  • Game day social network interaction is on the rise

espnW revealed its roster of sponsors for the fourth annual espnW: Women + Sports Summit presented by Toyota, which runs from Oct. 9-11 on Dana Point. In addition to Toyota, Gatorade, JBL and Under Armour will also sponsor the conference, with branding and on-site integration as well as digital and social activation across espnW’s platforms. Gatorade will be the official sports fuel partner of the Summit for the third year, providing guests with Gatorade products at all “points of sweat” throughout the venue including morning runs, core training, yoga and cycling. Under Armour returns as the exclusive training partner of the espnW Summit and will provide apparel, footwear and accessories from their new training and studio collections to all guests. JBL joins this year and will be the official audio partner of the conference and will gift all guests with the newly introduced Synchros headphones.

WWE and Susan G. Komen expanded their joint “Rise Above Cancer” campaign to include all WWE Superstars and Divas, who all began wearing pink ring gear starting last night on Monday Night Raw. The campaign will continue throughout National Breast Cancer Awareness month with WWE Superstars and Divas wearing customized “Rise Above Cancer” t-shirts to help raise awareness and funds for Komen. WWE will donate to Komen 20 percent of the retail sales price of all specialty “Rise Above Cancer” merchandise sold through December 31 on WWEShop.com and at WWE live events.

Digital & Technology

ESPN reports that ESPN Digital Media accounted for 30% of all sports category usage across digital platforms in August, according to comScore’s Multi-Platform data. In total, ESPN digital properties attracted 57.9 million unique visitors, logging 5.1 billion minutes of usage and 579.2 million visits.

NASCAR action is coming to The Whistle. The sports site will create short form, kid-friendly NASCAR features across all of the sport’s racing series that will be produced by NASCAR Productions, and feature NASCAR content across all its digital platforms including website, mobile apps and YouTube. Additionally, as part of the partnership, NASCAR Digital Media, LLC will be taking a minority equity interest in The Whistle.

Roster Moves

Commissioner Bud Selig named Robert D. Manfred, Jr. to serve as Chief Operating Officer of Major League Baseball. Selig, who steps down in 2015, will continue to lead the industry and will focus on significant baseball policy matters while Manfred will now oversee day-to-day management of the commissioner’s office in New York.

Matt Hutchings is leaving his post as President and GM of Comcast SportsNet Houston to become COO of Kroenke Sports and Entertainment in Denver, where he worked as president of CEO of Altitude Sports & Entertainment before returning to his hometown of Houston to launch CSN Houston.

The Main Event

A double dose of bliss as the Capitals & Blackhawks launch the NHL season stateside on NBCSN at 8p, the same time TBS delivers NL Wild Card action with the Reds/Pirates.
