Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 6, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Sprout and LazyTown aim to keep kids and families up and moving together with the launch of The Sprout Family Challenge, a new digital initiative and app (compatible with iOS devices), which promotes healthy eating, exercise and imagination. Families can find healthy tips and recipes at Sprout’s special online area at SproutOnline.com. Also at the site, visitors can click on The Sprout Family Challenge link to download the mobile app and join Chica the Chicken, from Sprout’s The Sunny Side Up Show and star of the upcoming new original series The Chica Show, and LazyTown’s SuperHero Sportacus, for various activities. The app features interactive challenges such as Let’s Ride, Let’s Play and Let’s Stretch. After completing the activities players can claim digital rewards including LazyTown music and video downloads. Part of Sprout’s ongoing initiative Kindness Counts, The Sprout Family Challenge is sponsored by The Learning Care Group with content from organizations such as the American Heart Association. The Chica Show is set to premiere on Sprout Saturday, November 24 at 11:30a.

LeapFrog Enterprises and Lionsgate ink a new partnership to develop, produce and distribute four new animated movies that will be released on DVD and digitally beginning in early 2014. The new deal will include DVD movies revolving around the continuing adventures LeapFrog’s updated characters such as Leap, Lily and Tad with new learning curricula and new subject areas. The deal also extends Lionsgate’s distribution rights for the LeapFrog catalog, providing it with worldwide distribution rights to both physical and digital content for the new productions. LeapFrog retains the rights to distribute the new content across its own digital platforms. The agreement comes on the heels of the recent announcement of two new LeapFrog programs, Magnificent Museum of Opposite Words and Adventures in Shapeville Park set to debut this January 2013. Since 2008, LeapFrog and Lionsgate have released twelve animated DVDs that focus on learning phonics, vocabulary, social skills and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

ZeptoLab, in conjunction with, ITV Studios Global Entertainment (ITVS GE), the worldwide licensing agent for ZeptoLab’s Cut The Rope, debuts a line of t-shirts for K6+ at Asda stores as part of its George apparel collection in the UK. Designed exclusively for George by Smith & Brooks, the t-shirt line debuts in a selection of Asda stores as well as online at www.george.com this month. The t-shirts feature Cut The Rope graphics, including the candy loving star Om Nom and will be supported with in-store promotional material and online competitions and give-a-ways.


Nickelodeon UK teams with The Show 4 Kids to produce new original interstitials featuring based on the family-focused musical act The Go!Go!Go! Show. The 10×3 shorts will showcase follow-along dance routines and original music written by UK pop stars Mike Stock and Steve Crosby. Designed to get viewers up and moving, the interstitials focus on topics such as fitness, friendship and healthy eating and are set to air on Nick Jr. beginning February 2013. The Go!Go!Go! Show is a kid/family aimed music/dance-centric live comedy show, starring a cast of six, which has been running in London’s West End and on tour throughout Britain since 2010. The new interstitial series will be produced by the Nickelodeon Creative Services.

Disney EMEA & LATAM begins production in Argentina on a second season of Disney Channel‘s kid/tween targeted, original, live-action telenovela, Violetta. This is the first original live-action series created by Disney Channel Latin America and Disney Channels Europe, Middle East and Africa, in association with Argentina-based production company Pol-ka. The first season of Violetta can already be seen in Italy, Spain, Latin America, France and Israel. Already available in Italy, the series soundtrack will debut across the rest of Europe, Russia, Central and Eastern Europe, and the Middle East and Africa this month. The second season, comprised of 80×45, continues to follow talented teen Violetta as she returns to her home in Buenos Aires after living in Europe for several years. The series also features an international cast including actors from Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Mexico and Spain. This season joining the cast is Spanish actor, Diego Dominguez, as the new bad boy, Diego.

Disney XD picks up a third season of its live-action series Kickin’ It. Set to begin production in Hollywood in January 2013, the new season follows the endearing marshal arts misfits on new exploits outside the dojo. Every Monday this November, during the 7:30p telecast, as part of a Nintendo Wii U sponsorship on Disney XD, the cast Kickin’ It and Disney Channel’s Jessie will be featured in a series of interstitials, going head to head in a Wii U showdown. Created by Jim O’Doherty (Grounded for Life, 3rd Rock from the Sun) and executive produced by J.J. Wall (Til Death, Brothers) and O’Doherty, Kickin’ It stars Jason Earles, black-belt martial artist Leo Howard, Mateo Arias, Dylan Riley Snyder and Olivia Holt. The series is produced by It’s A Laugh Productions.

ABC will air two Peanuts animated specials, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, in HD and with Spanish audio, and This Is America, Charlie Brown: The Mayflower Voyagers, on both Wednesday and Thursday, November 21 and 22 at 8-9p. The specials were executive-produced by Lee Mendelson and created and written by Charles M. Schulz. Bill Melendez is the producer and director and Vince Guaraldi composed the music.

BRB Internacional enters into a deal with Spain-based Imaginarium, a global retailer of toys and other kid/family products, under which BRB’s kid/family animated series will be available on Imaginarium’s kid-targeted tablet SuperPaquito, via its content platform PaquitoLand (www.imaginarium.es/paquitoland). Kid-centric content from this website is available for various devices, such as mobile phones, tablets, iPad and PCs and Macs. So far titles including Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds, David The Gnome, Around the World with Willy Fog, Teo, Nicholas… and Bernard are available, in different languages, on both SuperPaquito and PaquitoLand.

Please include the following information: type of program (i.e. series, special, documentary, movie or holiday-themed episode, animated, live-action or other), title, dates and times of all airings (please indicate when the show first premieres and when subsequent encores will air). A confirmation email will be sent following each submission from Gwen (if you don’t receive a confirmation email, please resubmit).

Hilary Smith upped to SVP/Communications for NBCUniversal, Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media (E&DN/IM). In her new role, Smith will oversee communications and serve as the lead spokesperson for the division, which includes Sprout, Telemundo, mun2, Bravo Media, Oxygen Media, Style Media, DailyCandy, Fandango, iVillage, Television Without Pity and the Integrated Media group. She will report to Lauren Zalaznick, Chairman of the division. Smith takes over the reins from Cameron Blanchard, who was recently named SVP/Corporate Communications, NBCUniversal. A 14-year veteran of NBCUniversal, most recently Smith oversaw communications for E&DN/IM’s digital businesses, Fandango, DailyCandy, iVillage and Television Without Pity. She also led communications, as well as consumer and trade marketing for the company’s Integrated Media business, which includes the company-wide ad sales and marketing initiatives Women at NBCU, Green is Universal, Healthy at NBCU and Hispanics at NBCU. Prior to joining NBCUniversal, she was a Press Manager at CBS News.

Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns signs a new long-term deal keeping him on in his position through October 2017. Burns, who joined Lionsgate’s Board f Directors in 1999 and has served as the company’s Vice Chairman for 12+ years, is credited with teaming with CEO Jon Feltheimer to establish Lionsgate as a worldwide entertainment company. Most recently, Burns was key in Lionsgate’s January 2012 acquisition of Summit Entertainment as well as efforts related to the company’s capital structure, including arranging a new $800 million revolving credit facility and paying down the $500 million Summit term loan more than two years early.
