Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 27, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

With NHL negotiations at a standstill, it’s time for the big guns. Federal mediators are being brought in to help push forward labor negotiations that have the season on the verge of being cancelled. Both the league and its players association agreed to meet with a mediator from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. The first meeting will be held tomorrow, according to ESPN.

On the Air

Viewers were still hungry for football at the end of Thanksgiving weekend, with FOX’s late-game pitting San Francisco and New Orleans drawing a 16.5 rating in Nielsen overnight numbers. That marks a 6% climb over the comparable game last year. NBC also saw year-to-year gains as the Giants smothering of the Packers handed the network with a 13.5 score, up 8% from 2011 numbers. Early game action wasn’t quite as appetizing however; CBS’ coverage off 10% with a 10.5 in overnight numbers while FOX’s early games averaged an 8.7, down 29%.

The NFL and its broadcast partners locked in final Week 14 and Week 15 NFL schedules, with NBC opting to keep Lions/Packers game set for SNF on Week 14 as well as the 49ers/Patriots matchup on Week 15 as part of the flex week option.

ESPN locked in its broadcasters for the upcoming ACC/Big Ten Challenge Presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, which starts today. Key matchups on ESPN will include Ohio St./Duke tomorrow at 9:30p with Brent Musburger and Jay Bilas behind the microphone, as well as UNC/Indiana tonight at 9:30p with Dan Shulman, Dick Vitale and Andy Katz making the calls.

CBS Sports Radio announced the launch of a new morning drive show for the upcoming radio network. The company has signed Tiki Barber, Brandon Tierney and Dana Jacobson to anchor the series beginning Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013 from the brand new radio network’s New York City studio in Tribeca. The program will be broadcast weekdays from 6-9a.

Golf Channel announced the hiring of former NBC Sports Olympics feature producer Israel DeHerrera to serve as Supervising Producer, Teases and Features, joining Jeff Neubarth, former producer for various ESPN sports properties, who also recently joined the network as Coordinating Producer for Morning Drive. In the newly created role, DeHerrera will serve as lead feature and tease producer for Golf Channel’s news and tournament programming. Neubarth will oversee production and day-to-day planning of Morning Drive, Golf Channel’s two-hour, daily morning show hosted by Gary Williams and Holly Sonders.

NBC Sports will present Global Golf Adventure-Kauai on Saturday, December 1st at 2:30p ahead of the network’s live third round coverage of the World Challenge presented by Northwestern Mutual. The program is produced and hosted by NBC Sports & Golf Channel analyst Mark Rolfing and features Rolfing traveling to Kauai to explore several of its top golf destinations including; the Poipu Bay Golf Course, Kauai Lagoons, Puakea Golf Course, the Prince Course and the Makai Golf Club.

Longtime Sacramento sportscaster Creighton Sanders died on Sunday at the age of 85. He served as a sportscaster in the city for over three decades, first joining KXTV in 1960.

NASCAR announced that Mars, Incorporated will be the recipient of the 2012 NASCAR Marketing Achievement Award at the NASCAR NMPA Myers Brothers Awards held at Encore at Wynn Las Vegas on Thursday, November 29. In a recent study, Mars revealed that the brand received a 4-to-1 return on its investment in NASCAR and through its 23-year partnership with the sport, and this past year the company executed integrated marketing initiatives designed to reach its three key stakeholders; customers, consumers and associates in an effort to extend beyond the iconic M&M’S® paint scheme. Initiatives included: consumer-centric promotions like the “M&M’S We Win You Could Win Sweepstakes”; pioneering the now popular TV panel program which places the logo of key retailers on the rear “TV panel” of the No. 18 M&M’S Toyota to drive exposure and incremental sales; Offering the Best Seats in the House program, and more.

With a potential BCS birth on the line, the Mid-American Conference has applied for a trademark of the #MACtion term often used on on Twitter during the league’s mid-week games, according to CBS Sports.  “Shirts could be on the Web site by the end of the week,” Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher told the site.

FIFA announced that the mascot of the 2014 World Cup- a three banded armadillo- will be named Fuleco. The name was determined by an online poll in which almost 1.7 million people from Brazil took part, according to the AP, with 48% of voters choosing the name over other entries such as ‘Zuzeco’ and ‘Amijubi.’

Great Clips is deepening its ties to Kasey Kahne’s Sprint Cup car. The company announced that it will sponsor Kahne and his No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports team for three Sprint Cup races in 2013, serving as the primary sponsor on March 17 at Bristol, July 28 at Indianapolis and Sept. 22 at New Hampshire.

Why stop at March Madness? Northwestern Mutual is launching a series of NCAA bracket contests on its Facebook page for even more NCAAChampionships, beginning with Women’s Volleyball in November. The bracket contests mark the first time an NCAA Corporate Champion its participation to other key championships, including Men’s Ice Hockey, Women’s Softball, Men’s Lacrosse and Men’s Baseball. The deadline for entry into the volleyball tournament is Thursday, November 29 at 12:30p. The winner with the closest final bracket will win a $500 dollar gift card to the NCAA Shop.

The NBA’s holiday video BIG Color has now officially gone viral. The video features five players competing on Christmas Day dribbling in time as a musical ensemble, where the quintet taps out the rhythms of a classic holiday jingle Carol Of The Bells. The video has now been downloaded over 5.4 million times on the NBA YouTube page, with nearly one billion video views, to become the 5th most viewed video of all time on the page.
