Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 19, 2013, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Welcome to Leadership Lessons, the column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the TV world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys and how that informs what they look for when hiring new employees. Today, Mark Burchill, Chief Executive Officer, Outside Television.

What was your first leadership position?
I was elected captain of my college lacrosse team by my teammates at Hobart College. We won the NCAA National Championship that year, and I learned that leaders only emerge by first earning the respect of their peers.

What was one of your first management challenges and how did you handle it?
Early into my career, another executive was working for me whose style was completely opposite my own. This person’s approach was never the way “I would have done it,” but over time I realized he was very effective and that style was one of many ingredients that made our entire organization successful. The experience showed me the best teams combine a diversity of styles, personalities and perspectives. 

What do you know about being a leader that you didn’t know early in your career?
I think many of us, early in our career, are searching out or striving toward a leadership ideal.  We want to emulate certain mentors or the people to whom we always looked up in the business before. What becomes more obvious over time is that it’s great to have mentors and role models, but you also need to be authentic to who you are. That’s critical to all leaders, but typically not very easy unless you are doing something you truly love and your personal passions are aligned with your work.     

What do you look for in candidates during the interview process?
We look for dynamic people who possess their own vision beyond the job description. We want the brightest people who are inspired to contribute toward the bigger picture. Almost everyone who works at Outside Television has a deep, personal passion for outdoor sports and an active, adventurous lifestyle. It’s the foundation to our culture and helps us remain authentic and credible.

Do you feel any major differences between operating Outside Television as an independent network rather than part of a larger media operation?
Our culture is very entrepreneurial.  I am lucky to have a very strong team of managers and I feel it’s important to empower them each with a lot of autonomy to run their units. At the same time, I am also closer to the frontline action than most leaders of large networks or network groups and that allows me to be more involved every day in areas like programming which is always the most fun aspect of our business. We’ve been fortunate to enjoy a lot of early successes as an independent network, and because we are smaller and more focused, I think every employee feels as if they have more of a direct impact themselves. I think, at the end of the day, we just allow ourselves to have more fun.

Jorge Granier has been tapped to serve as CEO of Spanish language digital entertainment company GOTV. Granier will continue in his post as managing director of RCTV International.

A+E Networks has named Michael Feeney its Executive Vice President, Corporate Communications. Feeney, who joined A+E Networks in 2001, was appointed Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications, in 2006.

Greg Beitchman has been appointed Vice President, Content Sales and Partnerships, CNN International. Beitchman was previously Global Head of Multimedia Content at Reuters.

Maker Studios has hired Erin McPherson as its Chief Content Officer. McPherson had been Head of Video at Yahoo.

Christa Robinson has joined Tribune Co. as Chief Communications Officer. Robinson had been Senior Vice President at CNN.

P.R. firm Sayles & Winnikoff Communications appointed Yuri Kwon as Senior Account Executive and Michelle Lauren Addo as Account Executive. Kwon had been Senior Publicist at Blake Zidell & Associates; Addo was Production Manager at Appular.

Julian March has been tapped by NBC News to serve as Senior Vice President, Editorial and Innovation, starting in January. Currently March is Director, Online at U.K.’s ITV.

Dawn Bridges was named Executive Vice President of Corporate Communications for Al Jazeera America. Bridges is a former head of communications for Time Inc. and Warner Music Group.

CBS Corporation appointed Larry Tu its Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer. Previously, Tu served as General Counsel at Dell Inc.

Lara Spotts has been upped to Executive Vice President of Development at Bravo, replacing Andy Cohen. Spotts had been Vice President of Development. 

Ricky Ow has been tapped to serve as President of Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific, starting in January. Ow left his position as Executive Vice President of Sony Pictures Television Networks Asia in August.

Film and content company Pulse Films named Kira Carstensen Executive Producer & President of Commercials, U.S. Carstensen had been Executive Producer and Partner at Supply & Demand.

Lara Spotts, Vice President of Development at Bravo, will head the script and non-scripted team at Bravo, replacing Andy Cohen

Mickey Carter has been named Senior Vice President of Television Networks Distribution at CBS Corp. Carter recently served as Vice President of National Accounts at Fox News.

Oxygen Media promoted Brie Miranda Bryant to Vice President, Development and Production, Original Programming. Bryant had been Senior Director of Development and Production.

Live Well Network appointed Judy Mitchell to their Affiliate Marketing and Distribution team. Mitchell had been Vice President, Affiliate Marketing & Cooperative Advertising at Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution.
