Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 1, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
I hate my job, I hate everything about it and if the economy were any better, I would happily leave in a heart beat. But that’s the rub isn’t it. If I leave, where would I be able to find another job? And equally important, when?
That’s what a good friend said to me just a few nights ago. He continued:
My job has evolved in many ways in the last few years. So much so, that it bears no resemblance to the job I was hired to do. We lost people, jobs were consolidated, responsibilities were added and changed, all without notice or conversation.
Yet I know I am one of the lucky ones. I am getting a weekly paycheck, while too many are not. And yet, as lucky as I feel in the broad scope of things, on any particular day, I feel cheated and ignored, duped and taken advantage of.
Some of his co-workers feel the same way and talk about going out on their own, or starting fresh. Yet each discussion ends the same way, this is a really bad time to consider any of these options.
Plus they realize their complaints fall on many deaf ears, people who are in real trouble of losing their homes, their lifestyle and everything they have known.
So they suck it up, they do the job that has significant changes on almost a weekly basis, because no matter how much they hate their jobs, they understand it doesn’t come close to not having a job.
So yes, you might hate your job, but for at least right now, don’t change a thing.

Is it a cliche or is it a truism? Whatever. The fact is: the more you put into it the more you get out of it.
There are so many possible triggers to your career advancement and so much advice, but there is no template to tell you which is going to be the one that makes the difference. First you certainly know you have to bring your resume up to date with a clear forward expression of your value. But then there is someone telling you to read the trades, someone else says Facebook is important, someone else says LinkedIn is the one that counts. Go to industry events, they say. Or network with your co-workers and with people from other firms, and on and on and on.
It’s all so overwhelming you don’t really get going at any of it properly do you?
And the channels of communication well I mean really! Some of us remember when we used to send mailers. In the post. Am I glad to have those printing costs behind me!
So nowadays it’s easier right? Well wrong. Because at the key moment that person you want to reach might be checking Facebook, or he could be Tweeting, or she might be scrolling haphazardly through her emails while stuck in traffic on the Ten on her interminable way to Santa Monica. Or texting, or G+ing or i-chatting or goodness knows what else. Can you be surprised she didn’t respond to your message? She never realized it was there.
The odds of a particular piece of communication being read especially if it is not something they are waiting for get longer every day. This proliferation has made the personal introduction even more important than ever before. Not only will you benefit from the validation of a mutual professional acquaintance, but you increase the odds of being noticed by hanging your story onto someone else’s name someone who will not be so easily ignored or “not seen” by the person you are targeting.
Don’t allow yourself the time to get discouraged. You have to be out there – in as many ways as you can manage. Work the personal connections. Work the channels. Be out there at events. Do your follow up “calls” on a different channel from the one that hasn’t worked yet. Be doing interesting stuff and be talking (texting, writing, blogging, whatever) about it. The subject matter you are on about may be just the thing that gets the kind of attention you are seeking.
So there you have it, and I know I did not make it any easier. But the truth is, the more you put into it, the more you will get back.

Aim thus to immediately shift the emphasis to your strengths and to the good points of the company you are interviewing for. Do not be overtly critical of your last employer, but by all means if necessary damn them with faint praise!
Are interviewers allowed to ask about a person’s health?
Questions about your health are not legal. But look out for legitimate work-around questions that an interviewer can ask relative to your ability to fulfill the specific functions of the job.
If you have particular health issues that you are concerned about, you could consult a legal professional before you decide how to respond. If you feel that you have been asked an inappropriate question, you can bring a charge, but this will not endear you to the employer.

KTEN Media in Denison, TX hired Tom Crespo as News Director. He will also anchor the Monday through Friday evening newscasts.
USA Network elevated Bill McGoldrick to EVP/Original Scripted Programming where he will continue to manage all scripted development of drama and comedy series, long-form and evening programming. Bill will continue to report to Jeff Wachtel, Co-President, USA Network and Co-Head/Original Content, Universal Cable Productions.
Kevin Ivey was tapped as VP/Program Research at Syfy and Chiller where he reports to Ted A’Zary, SVP/Research. In his new position, Kevin will manage all facets of Syfy and Chiller’s programming ratings via various metrics in addition to interacting with departments such as scheduling, development, marketing, press and finance. Before this, Kevin served as VP/Multiplatform Research at OWN Network.
TV One hired Jeff Meza as VP/Integrated Marketing in charge of strategic development and creative implementation of multi-platform, integrated marketing solutions involving the TV One brand. Jeff will work in tandem with the Ad Sales group to create marketing programs for the network’s clients utilizing on air, online, mobile and social media. Based in New York, Jeff reports to Linda Finney, SVP/Marketing, TV One.
Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. tagged Raghunadh Polavarapu as VP/Digital Operations for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM). In this newly-minted role, Raghunadh will spearhead the networks’ digital goals. Based in Atlanta, Raghunadh reports to Dennis Adamovich, SVP/Brand and Digital Activation for TBS, TNT and TCM.
Marketing and research consulting company, Rubinson Partners, Inc. added Judah Phillips to its advisory team. Prior to this appointment, Judah headed global analytics for Monster Worldwide and Reed Elsevier among other organizations.
Media and marketing agency, Media Storm named Frank Connolly as Executive Director/CFO, effective immediately. Frank will report to the company’s Co-Founder/Managing Partner, Tim Williams and is based at the agency’s South Norwalk office.
Karl Meyer takes on a new position as VP/Business Development for BrightLine iTV in Los Angeles. Before this appointment, Karl worked for Dish Network managing ad sales on the West Coast.
Lino Alvarez was appointed VP/Sales for Meruelo Media’s KWHY-TV, the MundoFox Flagship station. Lino began his new position as of yesterday.
Tim Hammond has joined independent TV production and distribution group, DCD Media in the newly-created role as MD/UK Production. Tim is based in London.
