Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 5, 2013, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

After The Interview

After the interview may be the most important part of the hiring process. Why? Because most applicants do nothing post-interview.

Because of this oversight, this can be your time to shine and separate yourself from all other applicants.

Always send a thank you note to the interviewer. Hand written preferred over email but either way, this comes first. Make sure you spell your interviewer’s name correctly and touch on something that was said during the interview so the recipient knows you’re not simply dashing off a form letter.

About a week after the interview, call for a status update on the hiring process. It’s important that you are very brief and courteous during this call; you may want to ask if there’s any further information they need from you, or what their timeline is to decide on a candidate.

End the conversation with, “Please let me know either way.” They may not, but you have reminded them, once again, of you.

Even if you don’t get the job but felt your interview went well, call the interviewer and thank them for their consideration and ask to be kept in mind for any other openings at the company. This will demonstrate your professionalism, your eagerness to work, your confidence in yourself and your courtesy toward others. These are all attributes that hiring managers are looking for.

QUANTUM LEAP What Would You Do If You Knew Your FUTURE?

In Quantum Leap, Dr. Sam Beckett travels through time and can see people’s lives through someone else’s body. In setting things right, from life to life, he hopes it will lead to a final leap back to his own life.

Sometimes as a coach, I feel like I am leaping between lives. My clients go through many hardships, and a few go through true devastation. These unfortunate situations have made me a little tougher on my more fortunate clients. I ask them how badly they really want success if they’re not even willing to write a mentor request letter. And as I kick them in the butt, they say to me, “Boy, if I’d only started doing this 5 years ago when I met you…”

That is now officially “NOT OKAY WITH ME.” No more “if I’d onlys!” It’s time to wake up! Do you remember where you were for the millennium on New Years Eve? I do. THAT WAS OVER A DECADE AGO!!! Time flies whether you’re having fun or not. Whether you make that work call or not. Time keeps ticking away.

Come up with 5 accomplishments that you want to achieve in the next year and the fears that are attached to them. Look at those fears right now. And don’t think I’m just preaching to you. I have fears with a capital F, and I am sick and tired of them dragging me along on their imaginary ride! So if this sounds personal, it is! 

I’m right there with you, I know that like me, you look at these fears and you beat yourself up knowing how irrational they are, and yet they stop you, if not paralyze you. But for how much longer? A call that may take you a month to make, can be made RIGHT NOW! Pick up the phone and make it, because your life won’t change until you do.

Are you reading these words and allowing them in? Your life won’t change until you decide that these D@#N fears that have been standing between you and your dreams are going to have to be bulldozed through!

When someone gets hit by a drunk driver and has to have surgeries for the rest of her life, like one of the BRAVEST actresses I know, she is scared, but she fights on.

When someone loses her husband and father of her two children to a brain tumor, like one of my BEST friends, she is terrified, bust she fights on.

When someone gets news that she has breast cancer, and she has two young babies, and can’t work now, and doesn’t get disability because she was a small business owner, like my DEAR young, neighbor, she is horribly frightened but she fights on.

These 3 women, have a glimpse of their future, and are fighting on, fighting for their precious lives. Let me give you a glimpse of what could be your possible future:

You accomplish all 5 actions you set for the next year. These actions lead to you getting 6 different jobs, where you make over 100K in 2013. On these jobs, you meet 42 people who will remain your close contacts for the next decade, leading to job after job. The confidence you get from the work and these close relationships, open you up to better relationships in your personal life. You move to your dream home. You make smart investments. You are happy, successful, and fulfilled, knowing that you will always be ale to create new opportunities and they will be in line with your values.

Does that sound like a future worth fighting for? Because fears are like the leaps Sam takes into the past and future, and like Sam, you’ve got to keep fighting them and leaping forward because the alternative is unspeakable and heartbreaking.

My mentor stinks. He was assigned by the general manager. Anything I can do?

I don’t know in which capacity your mentor stinks (not available to you, not knowledgeable, bad attitude, etc.), so it’s hard to give you a specific solution. Definitely seek out additional “unofficial” mentors.Mentors are meant to answer questions, advise you, make introductions, and in some cases allow you to shadow them. If your mentor stinks, take matters into your own hands and find people who can give you the help and guidance you need. On the other hand, if this is a specialized program created by the company and overseen by the general manager, you may want to have a constructive sit-down, about your needs and how the situation can be improved.

What changes do you see coming in a medium sized company?

I don’t have a crystal ball. Every company is different. If you follow politics there are changes that may happen due to policy changes and economics. I’d want to dig deeper and find out the question under the question. This is such a general question, I’d want to know, “What are your concerns or motives for asking this question?”

Jeff Zeleny joins ABC News as Senior Washington Correspondent covering Congress and politics.  Prior to this appointment, Zeleny was with The New York Times as a reporter covering national affairs and presidential campaigns.

RLTV tapped Marietta Biberman as Marketing Manager based at the network’s New York sales office. Previously, Biberman was with Screenvision Cinema Network where she served as Marketing Manager/Strategic Marketing.

Univision Communications Inc. appointed Mehul Nagrani to the newly-minted position of SVP/Digital Operations.  Nagrani is based at the company’s New York office and will now report to Kevin Conroy, President of Univision Interactive and Enterprise Development.

ABC News President Ben Sherwood announced Susan Saulny is joining the ABC News Washington bureau as a Correspondent.  For the last 12 years, Saulny was with The New York Times covering national news and contributing to the paper’s digital video efforts.

CNBC has hired Fox News regular Carol Roth as an On-Air Contributor.  Roth is also a host of The Noon Show on WGN Radio.

Indianapolis-based advertising agency Young & Laramore added Nick Prihoda as Account Director from Leo Burnett in Chicago and Nick Riedle as Assistant Account Director joining from Milward Brown. 

Katie Brinkley, granddaughter of legendary broadcaster David Brinkley was hired by video communications and PRketing D S Simon Productions and she will be based at the company’s Washington headquarters in the National Press Building.  Jim O’Reilly was also added as Regional VP.

NATPE’s new Digital Advisory Board includes Rob Barnett, Founder/CEO, My Damn Channel; Jason Hirschhorn, CEO, The ReDEF Group; Jordan Levin, CEO, Generate and President, Alloy Digital; Erin McPherson, VP and Head of Video Programming and Originals, Yahoo!, Inc.; Jon Miller, Founder, Fuel Media/Commerce; Lori Schwartz, Tech Catalyst and Principal, World of Schwartz; Quincy Smith, Founding Partner, Code Advisors; and Tim Spengler, Worldwide CEO, Magna Global.  Ross Levinsohn, CEO of Guggenheim Digital Media will head the initiative.

Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products named Rosalind Nowicki to the role of EVP/Global Sales and Retail.  Nowicki will report to Fox Consumer Products President Jeffrey Godsick

NBCUniversal executive Hilary Smith takes on a new assignment as SVP/Communications for USA Network.  Smith will manage strategic communications for USA as well as its programming, digital content, marketing efforts and the network’s pro-social campaign, Characters Unite. She will report director to Chris McCumber and Jeff Wachtel, Co-Presidents of USA Network. Most recently, Smith oversaw communications for the NBCUniversal Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media group.

NBC Connecticut/WVIT appointed Ric Harris as VP/Sales.  Harris’ new duties begin next Monday following more than 25 years in the media industry, mostly in advertising sales leadership roles.

Peace Point Entertainment tapped Fiorella Grossi as Head/Development to oversee the company’s Toronto based development team in addition to the company’s development executives in Los Angeles and New York. Grossi will work closely with Peace Points Digital Team and the international distribution division Peace Point Rights.

ABC News President Ben Sherwood announced that Rick Klein will take on a larger role as the network’s new Political Director. Klein will oversee the political unit as well as lead ABC News’ digital efforts around politics.

Man Made Music promoted Allison Meiresonne to the newly-created role as President/Brand Partnerships, reporting directly to Founder, Joel Beckerman.

Dirk Hoogstra was elevated to EVP/Development and Programming for HISTORY and H2 up from SVP/Development and Programming for HISTORY since 2010.  Hoogstra will report to Nancy Dubuc, President/Entertainment and Media, A+E Networks. 

The NBC Owned Television Stations, a unit of NBCUniversal named Tony Chiulli as SVP/National Sales for the East Coast.  Chiulli will supervise all sales efforts for the national sales organizations in New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Atlanta.  He will report to Frank Comerford, Chief Revenue Officer, NBC Owned Stations. 

Justin Williams will become the new VP/Digital for TNT and TBS in charge of overseeing and spurring awareness and consumer engagement with the networks’ shows an brands across all digital platforms.   Williams is based in Atlanta and reports to Dennis Adamovich, SVP/Digital, Affiliate, Lifestyle and Enterprise Commerce for TBS, TNT and Turner Classic Movies (TCM).

Social Studios TV, creator of YourShow – a personalized TV show produced from individual’s social media feeds, has tagged Tom Grasty as its new Chief Content Officer.  Grasty joins the company from Stroome.

AMC Networks elevated Sarah Barnett to President and General Manager of Sundance Channel, effective immediately.  Barnett is based at the company’s headquarters in New York City and reports to AMC Networks’ COO, Ed Carroll.
