Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 29, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

Warner Bros. Digital Distribution (WBDD) has expanded its offering of movies for rental via Warner Bros.’ Facebook movie pages.  Based on the success WBDD must have had with making The Dark Knight available this way a few weeks ago as a test, it is now making Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret, Inception, Life as We Know It, and Yogi Bear, available through each movie’s official Facebook Page using Facebook Credits (between 30-40 credits per movie, or $3-4).  All of these movies are rated PG-13, except Yogi Bear that is rated PG, which is not necessarily an indication of who watched The Dark Knight on Facebook – but is interesting.  Then again maybe making R and NC-17 rated movies is more complicated.  Consumers can stream the movie through their Facebook accounts for up to 48-hours from their initial purchase of the movie.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Universal‘s Candy Land movie will be penned by the writing duo of Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger, the duo that wrote the screenplays for both Kung Fu Panda movies, per Heat Vision.  Kevin Lima is still set to direct the movie, which is based on the Hasbro board game of the same name.  Prior to this Etan Cohen and Chris Morgan worked on the Candy Land movie screenplay.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon and Common Sense Media ( www.commonsense.org ) team to launch an anti-bullying campaign and promoting online safety.  The multiplatform, interactive initiative is part of Nickelodeon’s long-running The Big Help effort and will include a website that will support Common Sense Media’s digital citizenship and anti-bullying program, Rules of the Road, which aims to help kids practice safe online and mobile behavior.  The campaign includes a series include PSAs, the first of which launches this week, stars Nickelodeon talent from its live-action series providing tips developed by Common Sense Media’s digital citizenship curriculum that advises kids on avoiding and reporting cyberbullying.  The PSAs feature iCarly’s Miranda Cosgrove and Nathan Kress, True Jackson, VP’s Ashley Argota and The Troop’s Gabe Golightly, and will air on Nickelodeon channels and website beginning this week.  The Big Help area at Nick.com ( www.nick.com/thebighelp ) will feature the Rules of the Road videos and lessons (at the Digital Citizenship tab), including anti-bullying quiz and other content.  Kids that participate in the campaign will get digital rewards for their Nick.com avatars.  Nick’s ParentsConnect.com will feature a special Rules of the Road section and discussions board.  Additionally, a new anti-bullying microsite, developed by Common Sense, will debut later this year.

Canadian broadcasters CBC and SRC have ordered the new CG animated preschool series Monster Math Squad (30×12) from Halifax-based DHX Media.  Created by DHX Media’s Jeff Rosen (Poko, Animal Mechanicals, Bo on the Go), Monster Math Squad follows three loveable monsters, Bob, Lily and Goo, who work together and use their math skills to help out other monsters.  With a goal of promoting a love of numeracy and understanding that math is everywhere, the Monster Math Squad uses developmentally appropriate skills (counting, measuring, sizing, sorting, shape exploration, patterns, time etc.) to solve problems.

Turner Broadcasting Europe acquires the kid-targeted series Connor Undercover (26×30) and the tween series Baxter (13×30) from Shaftesbury Sales Company for air on Cartoon Network Nordic.  The series are slated to debut on Cartoon Network Nordic in fall 2011.  A spy/adventure series, Connor Undercover is co-produced by Shaftesbury and Heroic Film Company, while Baxter, which follows kids at a performing arts high school, is produced by Shaftesbury.  Shaftesbury Sales Company will attend MIPTV 2011 next week where it will offer its slate of 300+ hours of programming to buyers.

HIT Entertainment completes a pre-sale deal for the new CG animated series Fireman Sam (26×10) to both Turner Broadcasting for its preschool channel Cartoonito (UK, broadcasts daily 4a-8p), and S4C (Welsh-language channel).  Both Cartoonito and S4C currently air earlier Fireman Sam series.  The new Fireman Sam series, the eighth, will be produced by China-based digital animation company Xing Xing, which also collaborated on series six and seven of the series.

Nelvana Enterprises will showcase new kid-targeted animated comedy series next week at MIPTV:

  • Sidekick (80×11) – the series follows the almost heroic adventures of two superhero sidekicks who are waiting for their super powers.  Aimed at K6-11, a second season has recently been commissioned.  Sidekick airs on YTV (Canada), and is set to premiere on Canal J (France) and K2 (Italy) this year.
  • Spliced (52×11) – the series revolves around two mutant best buddies, on a failed experiment and the other a combo of chicken/cow/pig/shrimp, who live on Keep Away Island.  Targeted to K6-11, broadcasters include Teletoon (Canada) and ABC Australia.
  • Scaredy Squirrel (52×11) – Scaredy is a quirky squirrel that attempts to make everything just right in his world.  Aimed at K6-11, the series can be seen on YTV (Canada).
  • Mr. Young (26×30) – a live-action comedy aimed at K8-12, the program revolves around a 14-year-old boy who has just graduated form college and has begun his first job … as a high school teacher.  Created by Dan Signer (The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, The Suite Life on Deck), the show airs on YTV (Canada).

Toronto-based Wizard Hat Productions will showcase two series at MIPTV in Cannes:

  • The Thinkheads (26×30) – the K5-7 targeted series focuses on a recycling-centric family, including the three youngest members of the family, hip-hop dancers Beany, Dribble and Melvin.
  • Grim Hill (26×30, 1×44 Halloween Special) – based on a tween-targeted book series, the show follows Cat Peters (13) who has been touched by dark Faerie Magic, but has a charmed feather who helps her see the truth when all is not as it seems. Cat and her friends must keep Grim Hill safe from powerful Faeries who enchant kids to make themselves stronger.

Milan-based Atlantyca Entertainment in partnership with Italian publisher, Edizioni Piemme, launch the new Geronimo Stilton ( www.geronimostilton.com ) website for kids.  The new portal, which debuts initially in seven languages (English, Italian, French, Dutch, Flemish, Catalan, and Chinese), features a range of Geronimo Stilton-themed games and activities, a social community, and links to the book series, animated programs and merchandise.  The site launches with the support of the Geronimo book series publishers Scholastic, Edizioni Piemme Albin Michel, Baeckens Book, De Wakkere Muis, Grup 62, and 21 Century Publishing House.

Knowledge Adventure grows its kid-targeted educational Math Blaster brand with the launch of a Spanish-language version of MathBlaster.com ( www.mathblaster.com ).  MathBlaster.com, the English version of which Knowledge Adventure debuted earlier this year, features arcade-style math challenges in 3D and a Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) world.

Sesame Workshop and Impelsys launch the Sesame Street eBookstore iPad app (at the Apple app store) that provides access to 150+ Sesame Street eBooks, which are also available via an online subscription at ( www.ebooks.sesamestreet.org ).  The app allows users to browse for free, and to read all the eBook titles users will need to subscribe ($3.99/month or $39.99/year).  The eBook titles are available in several formats: eBooks; Audio eBooks; and Animated eBooks. Subscribers of the Sesame Street eBookstore can use the app to access their bookshelf with an iPad and do not require an additional subscription purchase.

MARKETING/LICENSING

In other Geronimo Stilton news… Atlantyca Entertainment enters into a five-year deal with noted Japanese publisher Kodansha to release the Geronimo Stilton Funny Tales book series in Japan.  Kodansha plans to release the first title in the book series in June 2011 via its Kodansha Children’s Book division.

Chapman Entertainment enters into a licensing deal with Jumbo Games for a line of games and puzzles based on the preschool series Raa Raa the Noisy Lion.  Raa Raa the Noisy Lion is set to premiere on Cbeebies in May 2011.  Jumbo plans to launch its products in early 2012.

Entertainment One Distribution inks a deal with Star Rock to release the new audio CD Star Rock for Kids on June 14, 2011.  The Star Rock for Kids CD series features popular songs from the last fifty years performed by kids.  Created by Lisa Damiani (Star Search teen winner 1989), the Star Rock for Kids music series will release a new CD every four months.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Turner promotes Courtenay Palaski to VP/Public Relations for its Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media Group.  Palaski’s expanded role includes oversight of all public relations strategies for Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Boomerang series.  Palaski, who is based in LA, reports to James Anderson, SVP/Public Relations, Animation, Young Adult & Kids Media Group.  She will also work closely with executive and creators at Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank, CA, and Williams Street Studio in Atlanta.  Palaski joined Cartoon Network in 1998 and had served as Sr. Director/Public Relations, Cartoon Network.  She previously worked in development at TNT, publicity for Turner Pictures, and prior to that for the Samuel Goldwyn Company, and The New Yorker.

RATINGS

Disney Channel‘s premiere of The Suite Life Movie on Friday, March 25 (8-9:30p) was the top scripted show of the night with Total Viewers (2.5 million), and the top telecast of the night among K6-11 (2.4 million) and Tweens 9-14 (2.2 million).  From beginning to end The Suite Life Movie increased viewership with K6-11 by +40% and Tweens 9-14 by +39%, and doubled the year-ago time period in both demos.
