The Hunger Games will make its TV premiere on ABC Family, under a deal with Lionsgate. The agreement gives ABC Family the basic cable rights for The Hunger Games, as well as to its sequel Catching Fire, which is set for release November 22, 2013. The Hunger Games movies will begin airing on the network in 2014. ABC Family also has the cable TV rights to the blockbuster Harry Potter movies. In case you were out foraging for food this weekend, The Hunger Games opened over the weekend with an estimated $155 million at the North American box office, making the third highest-grossing opening weekend ever. The Hunger Games is the first title in a young adult book trilogy written author Suzanne Collins, who also co-wrote the screenplay and serves as an executive producer on the movie, and published by Scholastic.

Random House Children’s Screen Entertainment (RHCSE), a UK production house created by Random House Children’s Books and Komixx Entertainment, has optioned Dog Loves Books by noted author, Louise Yates, from the Random House Children’s Book (RHCB) portfolio. Dog Loves Books revolves around a dog that owns a bookshop and embarks on an imaginative adventure through his love of storybooks. Dog Loves Book was published in 2010, the sequel Dog Loves Drawing was released in the UK in February 2012. A third book, Dog Loves Counting, is slated for publication in 2013. Last month RHCSE inked a deal with Wish Films to develop the kid-targeted series Wanda and the Alien, based on the book series about a little girl rabbit who meets an alien by author/illustrator Sue Hendra, also published by RHCB.
Nickelodeon‘s Gak and Floam are back – yeah it is kinda that long ago – it was the 1990s. This week NSI International and Nickelodeon launch all-new Nickelodeon Floam (www.floam.com) and Gak (www.gak-is-back.com) products at retail – and it will no doubt be a battle between kids and parents who gets to play with the compounds and make those memorable noises. The new Gak and Floam, reformulated to make cleanup easy, are aimed at K6+ and designed to encourage creativity and open-ended play and are reusable.
Bulldog Licensing, the UK representative for the Garfield brand, completes new deals for a range of Garfield-themed products. New licensees include Somerbond (men’s nightwear and underwear) and J Fox (accessories including bags, belts, wallets, hankies and toiletries in wash bag). These two new partners join a roster of licensees that already includes Blues Clothing, Brand Alliance and Silverknit for apparel, Sert MST for pet products, Whitehouse for amusement plush and Smiffys for dress up, among others.
The Hub TV network will celebrate a wedding in the kingdom with the premiere of special back-to-back episodes of the animated series My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, Saturday, April 21, 1-2p. The network will also feature wedding-themed interstitial programming starring Tori Spelling (Beverly Hills 90210, Tori & Dean: sTORIbook Wedding), who will also host a celebrity “bridle” shower event. The special two-part wedding episodes, A Canterlot Wedding, will be supported in a number of ways, including with exclusive digital content available at the new mini-site, Hubworld.com/royalwedding (www.hubworld.com/royalwedding), which launches on April 2, and will also feature six new interactive, wedding-themed games based on each of the show’s main characters. The site will also offer a downloadable “viewing party pack” that includes printable party invitations, wedding hats, coloring pages and stickers. Additionally, The Hub will offer sneak peeks of the royal wedding episodes via its Facebook page and Twitter account, particularly important for engaging with the show’s tween, teen and young adult audience. The two-part episode finds the kingdom preparing for the wedding of Princess Celestia’s niece, Princess Cadance, to Twilight Sparkle’s brother, Shining Armor. But, when Twilight Sparkle discovers a secret about the bride… it could ruin her brother’s “happily ever after.” My Little Pony Friendship is Magic is produced by Hasbro Studios.
The second season of the live-action comedy Kickin’ It debuts Monday, April 2 at 8p on Disney XD. New episodes of Kickin’ It will air Monday nights on the network, and will be showcased via Disney XD on Demand, DisneyXD.com, Disney XD Mobile, Sony Playstation, Xbox Live and iTunes. Among the plans for the new season is a guest appearance by the Harlem Globetrotters.
Disney Channel will host a Whodunit Weekend, featuring two nights of mystery-centric episodes of its series, including premiere, the weekend of April 13-15. On Friday, April 13 the network will premiere new whodunit episodes of Jessie (8p), A.N.T. Farm (8:30p) and Fish Hooks (9p). On Sunday, April 15, special mystery-themed premiere episodes include Austin & Ally and Shake It Up. Throughout the weekend the DisneyChannel.com homepage will feature Whodunit polls, riddles and photos, including three exclusive bonus scenes from the Whodunit Jessie episode. Fans can also play the new mystery-themed A.N.T. Farm game.
Imira Entertainment signs further broadcast deals for its new 2D animated series Lucky Fred (52×12), while it also prepares to launch a new interactive component for the series. Broadcasters acquiring Lucky Fred, which has already sold in 155+ territories, are RTM (Malaysia), e-Vision (UAE), TG4 (Ireland) and Kidz (Turkey). Other broadcast partners include TF1 (France), Disney Channel (Spain, France, Italy, Germany, India, Israel and Australia) and Nickelodeon (Benelux, Scandinavia, Latin America, Asia and South Korea). Targeted to K6-12, Lucky Fred is an Imira co-production with Spain’s Televisio de Catalunya, RAI Fiction in Italy and Top Draw Animation in the Philippines. At MIPTV next month, Imira will launch the Lucky Fred cross-platform app features a web and mobile-based interactive geo-localized aliens hunt. As recruits fans act as special agents to find and neutralize aliens, and can earn daily rewards. The app includes multi-layers, collectibles from the series, and puzzles among other things. The app will be available around the world for iPhone and Android. Lucky Fred follows the comic adventures of Fred, an average 13-year-old boy who accidentally becomes the owner of a super-powered, shape-shifting robot (named Friday) that can turn into any object Fred can dream of just by saying so. The team is completed by Fred’s new neighbor Brianna, known as Agent Brains – or Brains – she is a highly skilled member of a secret, intergalactic security force.
BBC Worldwide appoints Walker Books at the global master book publisher for the preschool animated series The Adventures of Abney & Teal, which premiered on CBeebies (UK) in 2011. Based on artwork created by illustrator Joel Stewart and launched by Ragdoll Productions, the series revolves around two friends, Abney and Teal, who live on an island in the middle of a lake in the middle of a park in a big city. Abney and Teal’s days are full of discovery and explorations, which they share with a group of quirky characters. Walker Books is publishing the first three Abney and Teal titles for release in time for holiday 2012. They will launch with stand-alone picture books and a novelty title also illustrated by Joel Stewart. Rainbow Designs is the master toy partner for The Adventures of Abney & Teal.
Jewel, the popular singer/songwriter/actress, and new mom, signs a publishing deal with Paula Wiseman Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, to publish That’s What I’d Do, a picture book and CD a lullaby honoring her newborn son and their bond. That’s What I’d Do, Jewel’s first picture book, will be published on September 18, 2012. Inspired by the song What I’d Do, music and lyrics by Jewel and Patrick Davis, from the bonus edition of the album The Merry Goes Round, the picture book features illustrations but Amy June Bates (Hilary Rodham Clinton: Dreams Taking Flight by Kathleen Krull, The Dog Who Belonged to No One by Amy Hest, You Can Do It! by Tony Dungy).
