We’ve got kids news covered for you daily during Upfront season…

Yesterday, game manufacturers and distributors launched a public service campaign to educate the public about parental controls and ratings, particularly the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) system. The video game industry is at the nexus of the discussion surrounding violent content in the media in the wake of Sandy Hook school shootings, as well as rising pressure on Capitol Hill. The announcement also comes on the heels of a similar campaign launched by the television and film industries.
The Entertainment Software Assn. is additionally pushing to have the ESRB ratings extended to smart phones, tablets and social gaming sites. “By channeling our industry’s medium, we will instantly provide proven, practical, and effective information to millions of consumers,” said ESA president Michael Gallagher.
The campaign’s agenda includes enhanced public education efforts around game ratings and parental controls; coordination among video game retailers to use both their physical store footprints and dedicated online networks to educate their customers; cooperation with policy makers; and support for educational and other pro-social purposes.

Programming Picks

Selena Gomez may be busy spring-breaking, but Disney Channel this week starts production in Puerto Rico on Teen Beach Musical, an original movie about a teen couple who on the last day of summer magically teleport into a bikers-vs. surfers musical, set in the ’60s. Slated to premiere July 19, the movie stars Ross Lynch (of Disney Channel’s Austin & Ally and Hollywood Records’ R5) and Maia Mitchell (ABC Family’s upcoming “The Fosters”) and will be music-heavy, with a soundtrack influenced by surf rock, Motown R&B, rockabilly and pop due out July 16.

Al Jazeera is on a roll beefing up its children’s offerings. On the heels of its programming agreement with BBC Worldwide, Al Jazeera Children’s Channel (JCC) entered a free TV agreement with Disney in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The Disney deal gives JCC rights to telecast series including Phineas and Ferb, Kim Possible and Lilo and Stitch, plus Disney and Disney/Pixar movies and Disney Channels’ live action and animated series.

Thanks to a new carriage deal with Turner, Sri Lanka IPTV service PEO TV has started carrying Cartoon Network and POGO. The channels, both available in English, bring series including Ben 10, Scooby Doo and DreamWorks’ new Dragons: Riders of Berk to Sri Lanka.

9 Story Entertainment is upping the social media presence of its Almost Naked Animals property with an online campaign through kids online community Swapit. The 9 Story campaign, which runs through mid-March, includes display ads, an email newsletter, games, an Almost Naked Animals blog review and a themed competition.

Distributor Union Media nabbed four new international broadcasting deals for Komixx Entertainment’s hot series Toby’s Travelling Circus. Following recent sales to Finland and Israel, Komixx signed NRK (Norway); MediaCorp (Singapore); ABC TV (Australia) and S4C (Wales). Australia’s ABC TV also has secured DVD and digital rights.

Digital Update

Digital toy app developer Toca Boca is bringing Toronto-based new media studio Zinc Roe’s Tickle Tap app series and the company’s 10-person development team into its fold. Zinc Roe founder Jason Krogh will serve as CEO of the new company, Sago Sago. Designed for children ages 2-4, the Tickle Tap apps include a Sound Shaker sound toy, and Doodlecast, an app that records the users’ voices as they draw to create short videos.

Streaming kids site Toon Goggles (www. ToonGogglesinc.com) is entering the live-action realm through a new deal with Australia’s Southern Cross Austereo, to add the series The Workers to its library. The Workers is available to all Toon Goggles subscribers in North America.

Henry does digital: Long-running animated U.K. CITV series Horrid Henry is making its debut on iTunes this week. Indie producer Novel Entertainment and Abbey Home Media are releasing the first batch, each containing 13 eleven-minute episodes, with three additional volumes to follow. Additionally, Novel is beefing up the Henry web site horridhenry.me with a new subscriber portal containing exclusive content.
