Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 7, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

Arc Productions (Gnomeo & Juliet) partners with Platinum Films UK and Dream Mill to produce animation for Matt Hatter Chronicles, a new original 3D animated series for Nickelodeon UK and Teletoon Canada.  Endemol Worldwide will distribute Matt Hatter Chronicles globally.  An adventure/comedy, the series revolves around Matt, an ordinary kid until he discovers the Hatter family secret – they are the defenders of a portal to a different dimension – the Multiverse.  Matt must go up against a range of evildoers from movies, myths and legends in order to protect both the Earth and the Multiverse.  Canadian-based Arc Productions was formerly known as Starz Animation.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney Junior will include a new interactive feature with the new multi-platform programming event, Yo Ho, Let’s Go Summer!, beginning Monday, June 13, across Disney Junior digital platforms including Disney Junior On Demand, Mobile and iTunes.  Yo Ho, Let’s Go Summer will feature characters and episodes of Disney Junior original series Jake and the Never Land Pirates, as well as episodes of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Handy Manny, and others.  June 13-August 26, Jake and his pirate crew gold coins will appear throughout the Disney Junior programming block.  Kids with their parents can go online ( www.disneyjunior.com/summer) where they can enter the number of coins they saw throughout the week, and unlock various treasures, such as episode previews, games and activities.  Parents can also download gold doubloons for their kids to decorate and then upload a photo of their kid with their coins to the site, which might be used on-air.  Each Friday at 9a, from June 17, Disney Junior will premiere a new episode of one of its series on-air and online.

Mind Candy, a UK-based developer, reports that its two-year-old K6-12 targeted Moshi Monsters ( www.moshimonsters.com ) online virtual online game/social network has reached 50 million registered users worldwide, with 15 million of those in North America.  The brand has recently grown into the real world with the launch of (or soon to launch) Moshi Monsters toys, books, video games, trading cards, and in the UK and Australia a Moshi magazine.  Spin Master, the US toy partner for the property, will launch its Moshi Monsters toy in North America this summer.

Nickelodeon has begun production in Vancouver on its new original TV movie Rags, starring Keke Palmer (True Jackson, VP, Akeelah and the Bee, Madea’s Family Reunion) and Max Schneider (on the upcoming How to Rock, the Broadway musical, 13).  Slated to premiere in 2012, Rags is a music-filled Cinderella story set in NYC.  Brought to the network by executive producer Nick Cannon, Bille Woodruff (Honey, Beauty Shop) is directing Rags, which features original music produced by Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins (American Idol, lady Gaga, Beyonce).  Cannon says the movie concept was inspired by his love of the movie adaptation of The Wiz.   Rags revolves around Charlie Prince (Schneider), a boy who can sing and write songs and dreams of stardom, but is stuck living with his unloving stepdad and spoiled stepbrothers and can’t catch a break.  On the flip side is Kadee Worth (Palmer), the talented daughter of a music mogul, but she too is stuck  but for her it is singing other people’s songs and wearing what is chosen for her.  Charlie and Kadee find one another and find their way and an audience.  Rags is also executive produced by Nickelodeon’s Marjorie Cohn, Lauren Levine (Bridge to Terabithia, Best Player), and Jessica Rhoades (Best Player, Spectacular!) in addition to Michael Goldman.  Palmer will serve as Producer.  Based on a screenplay by Jason Fuchs, Scott McAboy’s Pacific Bay Entertainment is producing.

Elsewhere, Nickelodeon‘s The Big Help partners with the President’s Challenge, part of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition, to help promote the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) Challenge  the “Million PALA Challenge.”  The goal of the Million PALA Challenge is to encourage 1+ million US kids and parents to sign up and maintain a healthy lifestyle by taking part in moderate to intense physical activity for an hour a day for five days over six weeks for kids and 30 minutes a day for adults between now and September.  Nickelodeon will support the PALA Challenge with an on-air and online campaign, which encourages kids to get up and get active.  Beginning this week the network will start running PSAs on-air featuring Big Time Rush and offering tips on various activities.  Online, the PALA Challenge will be featured within a dedicated section of The Big Help site.  Additionally, Nickelodeon will host its eighth annual Worldwide Day of Play on September 24, during which the channel will go dark from noon to 3p.  Nickelodeon continues its ongoing partnership with the First Lady’s nationwide Let’s Move! ( www.letsmove.org ) campaign, which aims to solve the problem of childhood obesity.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Marvel Entertainment partners with Peavey Electronics, a manufacturer/supplier of musical instruments, for a line of Super Hero inspired instruments featuring comic Super Heroes of Marvel Universe.  The Marvel line will feature Captain America, Thor, Wolverine, X-Men, Spider-Man, Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk in detailed artwork on guitars, percussion instruments and accessories.  Set to debut this summer, the first instrument in the line will be a half-size Peavey acoustic guitar featuring Marvel Super Heroes, followed by a three-quarter size Peavey electric guitar and full-size Peavey Rockmaster electric guitar.  Peavey will also debut guitar picks and straps featuring the Marvel characters, including Ghost Rider and Punisher.

The Jim Henson Company will debut the new preschool series Pajanimals at the Licensing International Expo next week at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, with the goal of launching new merchandise in 2012 in categories including toys, publishing, sleepwear, slippers, bedding, bath, personal care and developmental.  The series is a global co-production between Henson, Sprout and Northern Ireland’s Sixteen South Television, with funding from Northern Ireland Screen.  The series, which helps kids ease into their bedtime routines and is based on music-based interstitials of the same name, is set to premiere in the US exclusively on Sprout this fall 2011.  NCircle Entertainment released a Pajanimals DVD this month featuring the interstitials.  Jim Henson’s Creature Shop created the Pajanimals puppets from original concepts by designer/artist Jeff Muncy (Pet Alien).

Alli Sports appoints The Joester Loria Group as the exclusive licensing agency for Dew Tour, the action sports series.  The Dew Tour is owned by NBC Sports and MTV Networks and can be seen in 75 countries.  The Joester Loria Group will launch an integrated merchandising program for Dew Tour including authentic action sports gear, with the initial merchandising effort targeted to teen and young adults and will feature action sports apparel, accessories, interactive, protective gear and sporting goods.  The Dew Tour features seven major action sports (4 summer, 3 winter) over the course of the year including skateboarding, BMX, snowboarding and freeskiing.   Broadcast partners NBC, USA Network, MTV2, Universal HD, Eurosport, Extreme Channel, Fox Sports Australia and ESPN Brasil feature 5+ hours of programming around the world.

Digital brand licensing firm Dimensional Branding Group (DBG) expands its suite of client services, to focus on promotion and business development.  DBG has been named to represent Angry Birds for promotional programs (not licensing) in North America and global gam publisher MiniClip for business development.  Additionally, DBG will debut its new logo and website on June 12.  DBG’s digital licensing client lineup includes Skee-Ball, Jenga and PlayStation.

The preschool animated characters Max & Ruby will be featured in a Chick-fil-A Kid’s Meal promotion in the US later this summer.  Each of the Kid’s Meals will come with one of five Max & Ruby storybooks. Based on the Max & Ruby books by author/illustrator Rosemary Wells, the animated series is produced by Nelvana Enterprises in association with Chorion, with 26 new episodes in production.  A Max & Ruby live show produced by Koba Entertainment is touring the US this year.

Mega Brands extends its multi-year global deal with Microsoft Game Studios to develop construction sets based on the video game franchise Halo.  The new pact will see Mega Brands work closely with 343 Industries, a division of Microsoft Games Studios, to further develop the Mega Bloks Halo Authentic Collector’s Series.

Scholastic Media will release I Spy Super Challenger for LeapFrog’s Leapster Explorer in September 2011.  Targeted to K5-9, the new I Spy title features 50 different I Spy riddles across 20 photographic scenes, as well as four re-playable action games where player race against the clock using thinking, matching, memory and math skills to solve puzzles.  This is the third I Spy title for LeapFrog mobile learning systems.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

NY and NJ-based Sayles & Winnikoff Communications and LA-based Maggie Begley Communications (MBC) are joining in an exclusive strategic alliance, establishing a permanent presence for both companies on the East and West Coasts.  Sayles & Winnikoff and MBC will work in tandem on new business development, and share services and combine resources.  Together the two firms already partner on behalf of clients such as Skechers Entertainment, 3d Entertainment Summit and Mobile Entertainment Summit.
