Cynopsis: Sports
06/07/11

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 7, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Last weekend’s coverage of the men’s finals of the French Open on NBC earned the network the event’s best overnight rating in 12 years, up 63% from last year’s ratings, according to overnight numbers from Nielsen. The Finals, which saw Rafael Nadal take Roger Federer in a four-set win, earned a 2.6 rating and a 7 share, easily besting last year’s score of 1.6/5 and ranked as the highest rated overnight for the French Open men’s final since 1999 when Andre Agassi became the last American male to win the Grand Slam event.

On Friday, NBC showcased the Federer-Djokovic semifinal match live as well as the conclusion of the Nadal-Murray semifinal match. That telecast drew an overnight rating of 1.3/3, for an increase of 30 percent over last year’s semifinals (1.0/3). Online, NBCSports.com’s live streaming of the semifinal match drew nearly 120,000 video starts, with an average viewing time of 48 minutes per stream and more than 5.7 million total minutes consumed. NBCSports.com’s homepage traffic for the day was five times higher than average.

On the women’s side, Li Na’s victory over Francesca Schiavone scored a 1.7/5, matching last year’s numbers.

On the Air

TNT has unveiled its plans for its turn in this year’s coverage of the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series which will debut on this weekend on Sunday from Pocono Raceway. Among the new toys the network will be offering fans this year will be twice as many camera views through TNT Racebuddy on NASCAR.com, and the debut of Inside Trax, which will offer fans audio and video from select crew chiefs and their teams. Petty and Wally Dallenbach will return as analysts to join play-by-play announcer Adam Alexander in the booth for each race.

The third match-up between the Dallas Mavericks and the Miami Heat in The NBA Finals on ABC delivered the network an 11.1 overnight rating, according to Nielsen, ranking as the second highest-rated Game 3 in the last seven years behind only last year’s faceoff between the Lakers and Celtics. Based on fast nationals, the 2011 NBA Finals on ABC are averaging 15,311,000 viewers, 10,543,000 household impressions and a 9.1 rating, to rank as the most watched since 2004.

CBS Sports is adding Marv Albert to its lineup, tapping the veteran to serve as a play-by-play announcer for the network’s coverage of The NFL on CBS. Albert will also continue on as play-by-play announcer for TNT’s exclusive Thursday night NBA regular-season and playoff coverage. He also serves as play-by-play for CBS Sports’ and Turner Sports’ coverage of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.

After losing an appeal of NCAA sanctions, the BCS has officially stripped USC of its 2004 national title Monday due to violations involving Reggie Bush. The BCS ruling vacated the results of USC’s victory in the 2005 Orange Bowl, which served as the national title game for the 2004 season, and also vacated the Trojans role in the 2006 Rose Bowl, in which USC lost to Texas, 41-38, in the championship game.

One down, two to go. Fox showcased its presentation to the International Olympic Committee Monday with a six-man delegation, led by Fox Sports Chairman David Hill, to make its case to win Olympics rights not only for the 2014 and 2016 Games, as expected, but also for the 2018 and 2020 Games. Comcast and ESPN/ABC will make their presentations today before all three networks submit sealed bids to the organization.

NFL players looking for a football afterlife will take part in the fifth annual NFL Broadcast Boot Camp, taking place at NFL Films in Mt. Laurel, NJ. The program will take place from June 20-23 and cover topics with each of the league’s broadcast partners, including CBS, ESPN, FOX, NBC, NFL Network, SiriusXM Radio, Westwood One Radio, plus local radio and TV stations. Topics will include hands-on work in areas such as tape study, editing, show preparation, radio production, control room operation, studio preparation, production meetings, field reporting and game preparation. Players will also tape segments as a studio and game analyst as well as take part in a networking session with television executives and serve as a live radio host on SiriusXM NFL Radio. This year’s roster of potential future sportscasters includes Amani Toomer, Tony Banks, Antonio Freeman and LeCharles Bentley.

HRTV is gearing up for the final race of the Triple Crown, with coverage beginning tomorrow with the post-position draw at 11a for the Belmont Stakes. Scott Hazelton, along with former New York-based jockey standout, and now HRTV analyst, Richard Migliore, and Zoe Cadman are locked in to anchor the weekend coverage.

Chello Zone has acquired Canadian reality series Mantracker as well Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory, which will be broadcast on Extreme Sports Channel across EMEA in the Spring. Mantracker features teams who have been let loose in the Canadian wilderness to try and reach their end location before expert tracker Terry Grant closes in on them. Fantasy Factory features skate legend Rob Dyrdek’s company set amongst the world’s first all-concrete indoor skate plaza.

Sheffield Audio/Video Productions and Comcast SportsNet Mid Atlantic have inked an agreement for MMA promotion Shogun Fights to deliver six one-hour shows in the 2011 season.  The deal includes five shows that will be produced from two live events as well as a ‘Best Of” special. Executive Producers for the show are Richard Van Horn and John Rallo through Sheffield Audio/Video Productions.

Sponsorship & Promotion

ESPN has officially launched its campaign for the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in “Eleven vs. the World.” The campaign outlines the great expectations of the US team entering the tournament looking to reclaim its crown, while also showcasing the formidable opponents they will face. “Eleven vs. the World” is designed to tell the story of the team between 1999 and 2011, in order to set the stage for this summer’s event. It also features some of the stars and nations who stand in the way of a U.S. Women’s World Cup title, which includes Brazil’s Marta or Germany’s Birgit Prinz. Wieden + Kennedy NY serves as the creative agency for the new campaign.

TEAM Marketing has tapped Simon Thomas as the new CEO of the organization. Thomas will report to Martin Wagner, Delegate of the board of the TEAM Group. Thomas brings 13 years of company experience to the table and previously served as Managing Director Television and Event. In addition, Patrick Murphy has been named Managing Director Sales for the company where he will be responsible for all sales across television and sponsorship. The internal restructuring is designed to create an integrated sales and account management focus for TEAM in its relationship with its main partner UEFA.

After more than one million online votes, World Fishing Network has crowned Roscoe, NY as its “Ultimate Fishing Town.” Representatives from The Roscoe – Rockland Chamber of Commerce will now receive a $25,000 donation to be used towards a fishing-related cause as a result of winning the balloting as well as 10 WaveSpin Reels at a local ceremony emceed by Mariko Izumi, host of WFN’s popular fishing and travel show Hookin’ Up.

Digital Fields

UFC fans need only to turn on their Xbox to watch PPVs. UFC President Dana White stated yesterday that future UFC pay per views will be now available for streaming on demand through the Xbox Live network. UFC inked a deal with Microsoft to be part of the Xbox Live program although no time table for availability was announced.

The NHL has launched its “Goal of the Year” balloting on Facebook featuring five nominees. Fans can vote for their favorite on the NHL Facebook page through June 16, with the winning goal to be announced at the NHL Awards on June 22.

In My Opinion …

Sure you can knock his movies… or his music… or his TV shows, but no one can knock the trailblazing way Shaquille O’Neal could promote and play with his fans. His announcement on Wednesday to retire as a player from the NBA via Twitter was par for the course for the perennial All-Star. Whether it was by constantly connecting with his 3.8 million Twitter followers, landing sly endorsement deals, or promoting his latest project, Shaq’s engagement with fans will leave a legacy that lasts far longer than his feuds on the court. I look forward to following his next venture, be it behind the microphone, as a team owner or wherever (ok, maybe not the movies). .
