Good morning. It’s Tuesday, June 12, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.
Broadcast TV networks including ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, TeleFutura, Telemundo and Univision vowed yesterday to better help guide parents control what their family’s are watching by providing additional media ratings tools relating to programs available on the internet. The commitment is to have this up and running for full-length rated programming posted online beginning December 1, 2012. The networks will apply the TV rating system to these full-length entertainment programs that stream on the websites they control. Each media company will establish its own rating system, which could be complicating to consumers. But they are all in agreement that their rating for a program will appear at the beginning of the full-length video program as well as in the online programming descriptions. Network websites will also include or link to ratings system information. The initial voluntary TV Parental Guidelines system, which is to say not required by law, was adopted by broadcast and cable TV networks, launched in the US in 1997 and generally includes (with further subcategories too): TV-Y (all kids); TV-Y7 (directed to older kids – designed for kids 7+); TV-G (general audiences – most parents would find this program suitable for all ages); TV PG (parental guidance suggested – this program contains material that parents may find unsuitable for younger kids); TV-14 (parents strongly cautioned this program contains some material that many parents would find unsuitable for kids under 14); TV-MA (for mature audiences only – specifically designed for adults and may be unsuitable for kids under 17).

Little Airplane Productions is accepting applications for a unique workshop taught by accomplished preschool TV veterans on each step of creating a high-quality preschool series. Topics include Writing, Pitching, Legal, Design, Music, Directing, Producing, Distribution and more. A panel of noteworthy Children’s TV broadcasters will be on hand to discuss pitching to a network.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT Tonka powers its way to the big screen in a new animated feature film produced by Sony Pictures Animation, Hasbro and Happy Madison Productions. The film will also be produced and developed by Brian Goldner, President and CEO of Hasbro, and Bennett Schneir, Hasbro’s SVP and MD/Motion Pictures, and will be written by Fred Wolf. The new Tonka project furthers the relationship between Sony Pictures and Hasbro, which already includes plans for movies based on Hasbro’s Risk and Candy land game properties. Candy Land is also a Happy Madison project. The popular Tonka toy truck brand was introduced 65 years ago. While Paramount’s Transformers movies, based on Hasbro’s Transformers toy line, have performed well, Universal’s Battleship, the movie based on Hasbro’s game that is currently in theatres, has not done as well.
Walt Disney Animation Studios announces plans to release the computer animated, adventure/comedy feature film Frozen in November 2013. Directed by Chris Buck (Tarzan, Surf’s Up) and produced by Peter Del Vecho (Winnie the Pooh, The Princess and the Frog), the voice cast for Frozen stars Kristen Bell (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Couples Retreat, Hit & Run, among many others) and Idina Menzel (Wicked, Rent, Glee). The movie will feature original songs by celebrated Broadway talents Robert Lopez (The Book of Mormon, which he co-wrote with Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and Avenue Q) and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (In Transit, which is headed to Broadway). The husband/wife team also wrote original songs for Winnie the Pooh (2011), a stage version of Finding Nemo and the new musical, Up Here. Frozen is set in a kingdom trapped in an eternal winter. There a young dreamer, Anna (Bell) teams with Kristoff, a daring mountain man, on an important journey to find the Snow Queen (Menzel) and squelch the icy spell. Along the way they encounter all sorts of extreme challenges, mystical creatures and magic at every turn, as they race to save the kingdom from destruction.
Anne Of Green Gables is set to return TV in a new 13-episode series under a deal between Breakthrough Entertainment and the heirs of Lucy Maud Montgomery, author of Anne of Green Gables, it was announced at the Banff World Media Festival. Breakthrough Entertainment in partnership with the L.M. Montgomery family will develop and produce this new contemporary retelling of the classic Anne of Green Gables novels, which is slated to head into production in 2013 in the Canadian Maritimes. Anne of Green Gables was first published in 1908 and follows the adventures of the spirited Anne Shirley who comes to live at Green Gables.
In Canada, Astral‘s Disney XD and Disney Junior have ordered two Canadian original productions for the 2012/2013 season. Disney Junior commissions the animated short-form and interactive mobile preschool series Yub Yubs (50×2) from Radical Sheep Productions for both its English and French language networks, while Disney XD has ordered its first original movie from Fresh TV with the live-action film Bunks (1×90). Both series are slated to begin production in Toronto later this summer and launch in 2013.
- Yub Yubs revolves around three curious characters who express their feelings by changing into different physical forms. This CG animated series explores sibling dynamics and focuses on communicating ones feelings. Created by Matthew Fernandes of Industrial Brothers Studio and developed by Radical Sheep and Industrial Brothers.
- A live-action coming-of-age comedy, Bunks follows the O’Reilly brothers as they make their mark in the great outdoors. Grayson, Dylan and Dane don’t have the warmest relationship, but that will all be put to the test when they head off to camp together in Ontario’s Algonquin Park.
Guru Studio (The Backyardigans, Guess with Jess, Babar and The New Adventures of Badou) teams with publisher Immedium to publish a new Justin Time book series, based on its preschool adventure of the same name, on September 1, 2012. The first book in the series, Justin Time, The Pancake Express, is based on an episode from the animated TV show, and was adapted and illustrated by Justin Time creator Brandon James Scott. Justin Time launched on Sprout in the US in April 2012, and can also be seen on TV around the world, including on Discovery Kids Latin America and Disney Junior (Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Italy and French-speaking Canada). Justin Time was created by Brandon James Scott and developed by Frank Falcone, Mary Bredin and Scott.
Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE), the licensing and merchandising arm of Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, acquires the licensing rights to the popular preschool property LazyTown in North America from LazyTown Entertainment. Last year, Turner CN Enterprises, the network’s licensing counterparts in Europe, Middle East and Africa, acquired the LazyTown brand and unveiled plans to produce a new series of the Icelandic healthy lifestyle-centric kids TV series that can be seen in 170+ countries.
Rainbow, Italy-based producer/distributor/licensor, appoints new toy distributors for its Winx Club brand. New partners signing on to distribute Winx Club toys include Bizak (Spain), Universal Trends (Germany), Cotiplas (Brazil), Emway (Indonesia), Tisak (Croatia) and OFY (for Serbia). Winx Club dolls are produced for the worldwide market by Witty Toys, which is part of the Rainbow Group, except in North America, Australia and New Zealand and UK where Jakks Pacific is the master toy licensee producing and distributing the dolls. There are more than 10 new doll collections planned for 2012. The new collections are based on the all-new season 5 of Winx Club, which is currently in co-production with Nickelodeon.
Sprout, a 24-hour preschool TV channel, launches its licensing and merchandising business announcing new deals at International Licensing Expo in Las Vegas. This summer new products based on Sprout’s shows including The Sunny Side Up Show and Noodle and Doodle, as well as a collection of merchandise featuring its new upcoming series The Chica Show, which debuts this November 2012. New deals include those with licensees Fiesta – for Chica plush, and NCircle – for Noodle and Doodle episodic DVDs. All of the products will be available at specialty retailers, as well as ShopSprout.com, which will launch this fall. Chica merchandise will be available beginning this month with a 13-inch plush, and will be followed by a 6-inch plush. Additional Chica products, including plush backpacks, will be available in early 2013. The Noodle and Doodle DVD is available now with an additional title set for release in October. Sprout is also exploring other categories such as e-books and apparel.
Endemol’s Endemol Worldwide Brand Division completes new licensing deals for its format series Wipeout. New Wipeout licensees include Mighty Fine, which will lunch its exclusive apparel at Disney Stores nationwide from June 25, 2012. Series fans can personalize their Wipeout gear (T-shirts, totes, iPhone and iPad skins) at DisneyStore.com. In spring 2013 Jakks Pacific will launch its interactive Wipeout toys at retail in the US, followed shortly thereafter by an international rollout. Wipeout will be showcased this week at Licensing Expo 2012 in Las Vegas. The new season of Wipeout, which is not specifically targeted to kid audiences, will debut on ABC (US) on June 28 (9p).
Saban Brands unveils plans for its newest version of Power Rangers TV series, Power Rangers Megaforce, which will premiere in 2013 on Nickelodeon. Power Rangers Megaforce, which introduces new characters, also coincides with Saban Brands celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Power Rangers franchise.
Disney XD picks up a second season of Marvel Television‘s animated series Ultimate Spider-Man, which airs as part of the channel’s Marvel Universe programming block. The second season of Ultimate Spider-Man will feature Spidey teaming up with Marvel heroes including, the Avengers, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the Hulk – while facing classic villains such as the Lizard among others. Man of Action return to the series as Co-Executive Producers alongside Creative Consultant Paul Dini. Consulting Producer Brian Michael Bendis, who has written every issue of the Ultimate Comics Spider-Man since its best selling launch in 1999, will also return to pen some scripts.
FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) inks new international TV distribution deals for the boy 6-11 targeted, animated action/adventure series Monsuno (52×30). Acquiring Monsuno are CITV (UK), Switchover Media‘s K2 (Italy), RTVE‘s kid channel Clan (Spain), YTV (Canada), Spacetoon (Middle East), and Nine Network‘s GO! channel (Australia). Nickelodeon holds the pay TV rights to Monsuno, which premiered in the US on Nicktoons earlier this year and is now rolling out in 60+ markets worldwide. FME is the worldwide (excluding Asia) distribution and ancillary rights agent for Monsuno and will showcase the property at Licensing International Expo this week exploring the second phase of its licensing programming for categories including apparel, graphic novels, sticker and activity books, and phase three, which includes games, outdoor toys, dress up and role play, activity and craft, board games and puzzles. The Monsuno TV series is co-produced by Pacific Animation Partners, a joint venture between Jakks Pacific and Dentsu Entertainment USA, with FremantleMedia Enterprises and The Topps Company. Jakks Pacific is the creator of the underlying Monsuno property and master toymaker for the Monsuno toy line. The Topps Company produces Monsuno trading card games, confectioneries and related products.
MarVista Entertainment, the exclusive international distributor for Saban Brands Power Rangers franchise, inks a TV deal for the series Power Rangers Samurai and Power Rangers Super Samurai with Channel 5 (UK). Episodes of both seasons will premiere later this summer in the channel’s new weekend animation boy-targeted programming block. MarVista recently completed deals with international broadcasts for Power Rangers Samurai, including Boing (Spain), Venevision (Venezuela), Mega (Chile), and Sonic (part of the Nickelodeon platform in India). These international partners join existing International partners, including Nickelodeon (US and multiple other territories), Channel 9 (Australia), TV4 (New Zealand), Canal J and Gulli (France), Mediaset’s Italia 1 and Boing (Italy) and Televisa (Mexico).
Toon Goggles, a free kid-targeted online channel, adds more programming to its slate as it enters into a content deal with producer/distributor Millimages. Under the agreement kids will be able to watch a selection of Millimages kid’s programming, including Pablo the Little Red Fox, Pitt & Kantrop and Pigeon Boy via Toon Goggles (www.toongoggles.com) across the US and Canada.
Animation production company Dinamo Productions (Rastamouse, Iconicles) appoints Hoho Rights, the commercial arm of Hoho Entertainment, to manage the international TV and licensing rights to its hybrid mixed-media preschool series Abadas (52×11). Each episode of Abadas begins when Ben, the 6-year-old narrator, opens his magical pop-up book to look for his friends. At the centre of each episode is a visual word game. Ben introduces the word and helps the characters, through a series of clues, to find the related object. Currently airing on CBeebies, Abadas is a co-production with Dublin-based Kavaleer Productions.
Little Airplane Productions signs three new international TV deals for its short-form animated series Small Potatoes. Picking up Small Potatoes are KiKA (Germany), which will air the series as 13×7, and Rai (Italy) and TV Brasil (Brazil), which will run the series as 26×3. Small Potatoes can be seen on 20+ broadcasters around the world, including CBeebies (UK), Disney Junior (US) and ABC (Australia).
Insight Strategy Group names Stephen Lenzen to the newly created position of VP/ Quantitative Strategy. Lenzen is responsible for leading and directing Insight’s quantitative research team. He will work closely with Insight’s qualitative teams across the company’s business practices and clients. Most recently Lenzen was VP/Advanced Analytics, BAV Consulting, Y&R Brands. During his time there he held a number of positions, including Senior Analyst, Associate Director and VP/Account Director, before being named to his most recent position.
