Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 9, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Wimbledon dropped a set this weekend, with coverage of both the Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ Championships taking a slide in year-to-year comparisons. That said, both matches still ranked as two of ESPN’s largest tennis audiences in channel history. Andy Murray’s victory in the Gentlemen’s Championship drew a 1.7 Fast National US rating, according to Nielsen, representing an average of 2,456,000 viewers and marking the second largest audience in ESPN tennis history. Still, that number was off 32% y-t-y. Saturday’s telecast of the Ladies’ Championship-featuring two lesser known players-plus the Gentlemen’s Doubles Championship drew a 0.9 rating for the five-hour telecast, down 18%.

Usage of the WatchESPN app throughout the entire tournament was up 274% in live minutes viewed, while the average number of daily spiked 89%, while minutes per viewer via the app more than doubled, up 110%.

On the Air

Univision Deportes opened coverage of the CONCACAF Copa Oro (Gold Cup) biennial soccer tournament on Sunday night on a high note, with Canada/Martinique and Mexico/Panama drawing an average of 1,228,000 and 3,316,000 viewers respectively on Univision. On the local front, the Mexico/Panama ranks as the highest viewed broadcast station during the time period among total viewers in Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas and San Francisco.

Golf Channel continues to blaze records, announcing that second quarter of 2013 ranked as the most-watched second quarter in network history, delivering nearly 29 million unique viewers. The network scored 124,000 average viewers per minute in 24-hour Total Day tallies, for a jump of 8% of the same quarter in 2012, according to Nielsen.

While we are talking golf, NBC is set to cover the 2013 U.S. Senior Open Championship with third and final-round coverage airing July 13-14. The network will carry three hours (3-6 p.m. ET) of live coverage on Saturday and Sunday preceded by a 30-minute Golf central pre-game show at 2:30p. Golf Channel on NBC’s weekend U.S. Senior Open coverage will be anchored by Dan Hicks and Johnny Miller, who will be joined by tower reporters Gary Koch and Mark Rolfing, and on-course reporters Roger Maltbie and Notah Begay.

MLB announced that recent American Idol winner Candice Glover will perform the national anthem before the league’s All-Star game at Citi Field. Marc Anthony will sing “God Bless America” during the seventh inning on July 16. The league also revealed that Pitbull will perform ahead of the Home Run Derby on July 15.

Outdoor Channel revealed its third quarter slate with 12 new series premieres, including Under Armour Presents Ridge Reaper on Mondays at 11p with Jason Carter and the Under Armour team as they relentlessly pursue some of the largest big-game trophies in western North America. Other series are set to include Primal Instinct, Trip Gone Bad and Razor Dobbs Alive.

Action sport media company Gravity Collection announced a pair of international deals, inking an agreement for international carriage with A Paravision China for distribution in China as well as SES Astra Satellite for carriage and distribution within SES’s platforms in Europe.

The coffers keep flowing for Manchester United, which locked in a deal with Russian airline Aeroflot to act as the club’s official carrier, replacing Turkish Airlines as the 13th global sponsor for United. Specific dollar figures have not been reported.

Under Armour is getting back into preseason football, launching the second chapter of the company’s I WILL campaign, “Ready for August” that features former Baltimore Ravens linebacker and two-time Super Bowl champion Ray Lewis serving as executive producer. The commercial marks the company’s first return to preseason football since 2010 and “captures the passion, intensity and grittiness of the next generation of team sports athletes through grassroots football.”

Digital & Production

Pac 12 Digital and NeuLion announced the launch of a unified network of digital properties that will initially include 10 of the 12 official athletic sites from the conference. The re-launching of the new school websites, operating under the NeuLion College Platform, will look to give fans a more streamlined experience across each site, with a singular platform that delivers a variety of features for a more user-friendly experience, while also incorporating the Pac-12 universal event schedule providing accurate game times, dates and scores across all school sites. Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, Washington and Washington State are all a part of there-launch under the NeuLion singular platform with while Colorado, USC and Utah will be added at a later date.

Sporting News Media announced the hire of Ross Tucker as its lead pro football columnist and video analyst. Tucker will create content that includes a weekly interactive featured column to be published Tuesday mornings in which fans can become part of the discussion later that afternoon via a Google+ Hangout. He’ll also be creating a series of web videos to provide more excitement and color commentary around his weekly column. Tucker played 42 games in the NFL before officially retiring in 2008.

EA Sports is dropping former Patriots player Aaron Hernandez from NCAA Football 14 and Madden 25 due to his arrest for first-degree murder and five weapons charges, according to CBSSports.com.
