Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, July 20, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Nickelodeon is set to debut a special episode of iCarly, iGot a Hot Room, during which viewers see Carly’s bedroom for the first time, on Friday, July 30 at 8p.  Immediately following the episode the network will offer a contest that ties into the episode on Nick.com/iCarly ( www.nick.com/icarly ).  During the episode Carly’s room accidentally goes up in flames and her friends come together to make her a new cool bedroom filled with all sorts of unique items.  After the show fans can log onto Nick.com for a chance to win some of the items in Carly’s bedroom.  Additionally, Nick.com is launching the iCarly Hot Room Boutique, where club members can get accessories and skins based on the items in her room for their avatar.


Michael Bay’s The Institute and Kalliope Films are producing an action-packed special effects movie version of Hansel and Gretel in 3D, per Coming Soon.  Based on the Grimm Brothers fairytale, the movie will feature the characters and things most of know from the story, like the kids, witch and her gingerbread house, but the movie will also include creatures from German mythology.  Joseph C. Pepe, the lead character designer on Avatar, will design the creatures.  Hansel and Gretel is scheduled to begin production in Germany in spring 2011.


Disney picks up a fourth season of the preschool-targeted CGI animated series Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.  Comprised of 13 new episodes and nine “extended specials,” the new season will premiere on the new Disney Junior channel when it launches in 2012.  Season three of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse will continue to rollout on Disney Channel through 2011, including new episodes, a new short-form series, Mickey Mousekersize, and two new primetime specials, including Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Rally that is set to debut this fall.  The series is produced by Disney Television Animation and currently airs on Disney Channel’s Playhouse Disney programming block.

Disney’s Friends for Change, which encourages kids to get involved in helping the Earth, debuts a new video spot this week focusing on the oil spill in the Gulf.  The spot aims to get kids to express their feelings about the situation as well as show how they are and can help protect the planet’s natural resources and wildlife.  The spot features Disney Channel stars, such as Joe Jonas, Brenda Song and Debby Ryan and Moises Arias, discussing the disaster in the Gulf and things kids can do to help keep their local waterways clean.  The spot will run on Disney Channel, Disney XD, Radio Disney and Disney.com.  Additionally tips and information about organizing community waterway clean-ups and resources for kids can be found at Disney.com/ProjectGreen ( www.disney.com/projectgreen ).  Disney has also made a monetary donation to help support clean-up efforts in the Gulf.

In the UK, HarperCollins Children’s Books acquires the worldwide rights to a new six book adventure series for girl 7+.  The series is the first collaboration for two noted authors, Linda Chapman and Lee Weatherly, who will write the books under the pen name of L.A. Peters.  The series revolves around Sophie, a 10-year-old tomboy and would-be stuntwoman, who is the guardian to the mysterious Shadow Woods and must outwit the creatures that live there from wreaking havoc in our world.  The first title in the series, Sophie and the Shadow Woods: The Goblin King, is slated for publication in May 2011.  The release will be supported with a marketing campaign that will include an online experience based on the adventure and mystery featured in the book.  The deal was put together by Harriet Wilson, Editorial Director, HarperCollins Children’s books, with Caroline Sheldon, Sheldon Literary Agency and Philippa Milnes-Smith of Lucas Alexander Whitley.

MGA Entertainment launches Bitty Buttons, its new line of magical rag dolls.  Designed to encourage kid’s imagination and creativity, the line includes different 13-inch dolls.  The mythology tells that each Bitty Buttons doll magically comes to life on its “sewn date” (aka birthday), and is made from a specific unique fabric and has its own personality, all a reflection of its birth date, and each has a pet  for example: Crumbs Sugar Cookie  Sewn on December 4 (National Cookie Day)  she is made from pieces of a baking apron and has a “sweet” personality, good manners and likes to have friends over for tea and snacks  she has a mouse; Spot Splatter Splash  Sewn on October 25 (Picasso’s birthday)  she is made form a painter’s overalls and is cute and creative and loves bright colors, messes, and eating spaghetti  she has a zebra.  The doll line also has its own 3D world at bittybuttonsworld.com ( www.bittybuttonsworld.com).

Licensing agency Gator Group announces that Cosmic Debris and Ashton-Drake, a collectible doll division of Bradford Exchange, are set to release a custom-designed limited edition Emily the Strange doll for San Diego Comic-Con 2010.  Donning a reversible cape (with the words “Save Yourself”), mask and kitty ears, the Emily doll features nine points of articulation and comes with her feline sidekick also in costume.  The limited edition doll (there are 250 pieces) and will be available at select booths during the convention and online at Emily’s Facebook Fans for $69.99.

Dimensional Branding Group (DBG) inks a new licensee deal with Kids Preferred to create products for Biscuit, the preschool book series from HarperCollins Children’s Books. Under the deal Kids Preferred will begin by creating a line of plush and soft toys based on the Biscuit books, written by Alyssa Satin Capucilli and illustrated by Pat Schories.  Additionally, Kids Preferred will develop bath toys, accessories, lunch bags and activity kits.


DCD Rights, an international distributor, promotes Amanda Eringer to VP Sales.  Eringer’s purview, which has included for TV sales in territories such as Middle East, Africa, Mediterranean, Southern and Eastern Asian, will now grow to include broadcasters in Benelux and Central and Eastern Europe.  Prior to joining DCD Rights in 2008, Eringer was with Precious Media, and before that with Zeal Entertainment.

Saban Brands, Haim Saban’s newest endeavor and a unit of Saban Capital Group, appoints Brian Casentini as VP/Development and Production, per Variety.  First up for Casentini is to head development on the new incarnation of the new Power Rangers series for Nickelodeon, as well as overseeing multiplatform content and acquisitions for Saban Brands.  Casentini previously toiled for ABC Family and Fox Family.
