Good morning – it’s Tuesday, July 12, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage!

Every classified is actually a series of questions.  Can you help us with this, can you make us more money doing that.  So next time you read a classified, write down the question or a series of questions the classified is asking. 

Once you’ve done that, not as simple as it sounds, make sure your resume and cover letter answer all those questions.  Make sure your “answers” are in the most readable part of your documents, such as with bullet points and bold face.  Use the rest of the document to explain and fill in detail.  But always, answer their questions.

Once you have completed that, bring the classified and your papers to a smart friend.  Let them read the ad, and see if they come up with the same “questions” you did.  If not, discuss.  If yes, show them your resume. 

This is where it gets good!  Grab the resume from them after twenty seconds.  Ask what they remember about it.  Is it the information you want the hiring manager to know before everything else on the resume?  And does that information answer the questions posed by the ad?

If not, you have more work to do.  If yes, you’re still not done.  One person isn’t enough.

Do this with as many smart friends as you have.  Agree on the questions, give them the resume and after twenty seconds, GRAB!

Keep revising your cover letter and resume until most, or all, of your friends agree on what the ad is asking for, and, that your resume and cover letter answer those questions. 

Once you have completed this process, get ready for an interview.

Four Pitfalls of Asking Questions

In business, the art of asking questions is an essential skill for virtually everyone.  Asking good questions enables us to obtain needed information in an easy to understand manner.  Here are four pitfalls that can get you off the track of asking good questions:

Pitfall 1.  Acting as though you understand something when you don’t.  People are reluctant to ask for an explanation for fear of  not appearing smart.  Yet this strategy can cause embarrassment for the questioner and responder.  There is one simple solution:  Just say “Can you tell me more about that?” 

Pitfall 2.  Failing to keep the communication style of the speaker in mind.  A great communicator is able to quickly assess the speaker’s style so that he/she can adapt the questions to that person’s preferred style.  For example, if you are communicating with an aggressive, direct person, asking them to “kind of explain” something will be met with resistance, and quite possibly irritability on the part of that direct speaker.  Conversely, a polite soft spoken person may just jumble thoughts and words if he/she is met with a very direct and aggressive questioner. Observe the style of the questioner and adjust your response to match the person’s style.

Pitfall 3.  Asking complex, seemingly scholarly questions that have multiple parts.  This is called the  “stacking” technique and the responder often  doesn’t know where to begin. They need to dissect what the person asked, process it, and then come up with a response.  So the tip here, as with many things, is the KIS method: Keep It Simple!

Pitfall 4.  Asking closed ended questions.  These are questions that have a yes/no response, and it usually closes communication.  In most conversations, the open ended question is better to lay out a game plan, solve a problem or make a decision.  Before you ask a question, see how you can begin it with the old journalist technique: who, what, where, when, why, and how.
Keeping these simple techniques in mind will help you perfect the art of asking questions.  Not only will you improve your communication skills, but also obtain much more relevant information.  In the process, you’ll likely find out how easy it is to create really meaningful conversations.  Now that’s a skill that is useful in all walks of life!

As a frequent interviewer of candidates I’d love to know what questions should be asked of potential candidates that helps uncover true tendencies as well as ensure that the fit on both sides is a good one.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

In order to uncover true tendencies, it isn’t so much that any one question will uncover this. Rather it is the way in which the questions are structured. 

One very good method of structuring interviewing questions is the Behavior Based approach.  In behavior based interviewing, structure the question to gain an understanding of how the applicant performed/thought/approached problems in the past.

This will then give you insight into how they think, act, and react, to specific issues that they will encounter in the position for which they are applying.

The way to structure the behavior based question is to begin with: “Tell me about a time when you…”  This draws on their past experience. Once they give an answer, build on it by asking “how” they approached the situation, and what results they achieved. 

For situations in which the applicant doesn’t have the requisite experience, which is mainly in entry level jobs, ask about how they approached school/college projects, but you can also ask Opinion based questions. Rather than say “Tell me about a time…” you can say “Tell me how you would handle …” This gives insight into their thinking style and how they are likely to handle a situation.

What is the customary amount of time you give notice to your current employer when you accept a new job?  My current work is “at will” with no contract.

While there is no law regarding how much notice an employee must give to leave a job, the customary amount of time is two weeks.  However, in higher level managerial positions, it is best to give three to four weeks when one is leaving on good terms. 

The real key here is not to burn a bridge based on not giving enough notice.  Of course, you want to be ready and available for the new employer, and most employers recognize that a minimum of two weeks is appropriate.  It is also important to understand the policy of your current employer regarding notice.  In some companies, if the employee doesn’t give two weeks’ notice, they can forfeit accrued vacation time. 

I was recently on a job interview and I mentioned the word, “Lady,” and the female interviewer almost took my head off.  When did this become a no-no and really, should it be?  It was not said in a degrading manner at all.

Every individual and company has its own understanding of what they deem to be acceptable language.  While the term “Lady” still has a very respectful tone for many, there are some situations in which “Lady” may be construed as too gender laden.  The safest word to use for a female is “Woman.”  That way you are not likely to run into any cultural issues.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

WGN America hired Mike Perciaccante as Director/Research where he will manage all program and sales research for the cable network.  Prior to this appointment, Mike was Director/Research and Marketing for Univision’s stations in New York, WXTV and WFUT+.  Based in New York for WGN America, Mike reports to Josh Richman, VP/Marketing.  

Mike Green named Honorary Treasurer of Britain’s Royal Television Society.  In his new position, Mike follows Grant Murray who left the Royal Television Society after taking a new appointment with Johnson Press plc as CFO.  Previously, Mike was the Deputy Group Finance Director at ITV.

Nickelodeon Australia tapped Ben Richardson as its new VP/GM.  Ben succeeds Katrina Southon in this position who was elevated to SVP/Managing Director, Viacom International Media Networks Australia and New Zealand last February.  In his new position, Ben will provide daily oversight of Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. which are subscription television networks reaching more than 2.3 million households.

Marketing/design specialist studio, FIVE33 added Leigh Rodwick as Head/Global Partnership Marketing.  Leigh joins from Hot Topic where she was Marketing Director for the national retailer. 

Former Outdoor Channel EVP/Marketing and Research, Denise Conroy-Galley hired for the role as SVP/Marketing and Creative Services at HGTV.  Denise will focus on branding, consumer marketing, creative and on-air promotions for the network in addition to media strategies designed to spur ratings and attract new viewers.  Based at HGTV’s headquarters in Knoxville, Denise reports to Jim Samples, President. 

Starz Entertainment appointed Michael Thornton as EVP/Business and Legal Affairs  Programming, Digital and Worldwide Distribution.  In his varied position, Michael will head the company’s strategic direction of business/legal affairs related to the acquisition of programming for Starz Entertainment’s linear channels, on-demand and online outlets.  He will further manage business/legal affairs for distribution of the company’s content with online/broadband distributors, transactional VOD/EST and the international syndication of proprietary Starz Original programming and Starz Media content.  Previously, Michael was EVP/Business and Legal Affairs with Disney/ABC Domestic Television since 2005.  In his new post, he will be based in Englewood, Starz Entertainment’s corporate headquarters in suburban Denver.  In addition, Starz Entertainment announced Richard Turner, SVP/Business Affairs  Programming is leaving his position this summer after a dozen years with the company. 

Effective immediately, Marc Mannino named Director/Music Synchronization with Imagem Creative Services USA.  In his new role, Marc will oversee the synchronization sales for the company’s music catalogs in addition to working on behalf of the company’s copyrights working with music users in the advertising, film, TV, online and video game businesses.  Marc will further manage a five-person staff located at Imagem offices in New York and Los Angeles.

Turner Broadcasting named Anthony Lukom as VP/GM, UK and Ireland.  Anthony will spearhead Turner’s roster of entertainment brands including Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Cartoonito, TCM and Adult Swim.  He reports to Pete Flamman, SVP/GM, Northern Europe.

Daryl Mintz elevated to CFO with Sesame Workshop where he manages all financial duties for the organization that operates Sesame Street.  Daryl reports to H. Melvin Ming, COO. 

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) hired Andrew Berman as VP/International Distribution for Children’s and Family Entertainment.  Effective immediately, Andrew will work in tandem with executives to find properties that work with FME’s portfolio and additionally will deploy strategies to distribute content and formats to media companies in international markets.  Based in Los Angeles, Andrew reports to Sander Schwartz, Head/Children’s and Family Entertainment.

Ryan McDermott tapped by Crown Media Networks, a division of Crown Media Holdings Inc. and operators of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel to become Director/Distribution in charge of Comcast, Time Warner and Bright House Networks accounts in the eastern region.  Based in New York City, Ryan reports to Lisa Barroso, VP/Distribution.

Dan Silberman advances to SVP/Publicity for A&E Network and BIO Channel.  Dan heads the development and implementation of corporate and trade communication strategies and oversees all program-based consumer press functions, talent relations and awards strategy for the cable networks including A&E Network, BIO Channel as well as the Crime & Investigation Network and the company’s documentary division, A&E IndieFilms.  Dan continues to report to Bob DeBitetto, President/GM, A&E Network and BIO Channel. 

Moxie Pictures employed David Casey as Director/Creative where he joins Jesse Korwin, Director/Development within the company’s growing TV unit, Moxie Pictures TV.

Saul Adams promoted to Executive Producer of PIX11 News at Ten with PIX11 in New York.  In his new role, Saul will manage the station’s PM News broadcast airing nightly at 10p. Most recently, Saul was the station’s Senior Producer the 10p news broadcast and he has been with PIX11 since 2003.

Shine Group Americas announced three staffing changes: Steve Shikiya appointed as CFO and Lee Rierson elevated to Chief/Business Operations and Legal of Shine Group Americas while David Kekst was added as EVP/Business Operations and Legal with Reveille
