Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
01.03.12

Good Morning. It’s Tuesday, January 3, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Resume Review

Another year has just begun, so let’s review the resume.  Don’t fool yourself into thinking  now is not a good time to send out resumes, jobs have to be filled during this time of year as any other, so send away.

Do’s

Simple, easy to read format.

Name and contact information up top.

Brief profile statement explaining what you can do for the company.

Three bullet pointed accomplishments that prove your profile statement. (The items mentioned above are the most important aspect of your resume, the rest might not even get read, but it’s still important to have a complete and professional resume.)

Experiences – keep the description very brief and mention only one or two highlights, but sell them!

Mention as many buzz or industry words that were used in the classified, in your resume.

The classified is asking a question, does your resume answer it?

Be as transparent on your resume as possible, you don’t want the person reading it, guessing as to why you left a job.

Quantify as much as possible, being a team player means nothing compared to increased sales by 25%.

Don’ts

Don’t include a goofy email for contact or have a bizarre voice mail. Don’t state that references are available upon request, they know that.

Don’t write about how the job would be great for you, write about how you would be great for the job.

Don’t over use words such as managed or oversaw.  Get out your thesaurus.

Make sure there are no typos and have someone else read the resume aloud to you, this will help with your editing.

Do not include a photo unless requested to do so.

Do not squeeze information into one page by using a small font.

Unless you are applying for a creative job, keep your resume professional and on white or off white paper.

Remember, a resume’s purpose is to sell yourself to the company.  Think of it as an ad you see in a magazine.  Everything is there for a purpose, to sell you.

Next Issue: The Return of McSnarky!

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~
Put Up or Shut Up
by Lisa Kaye

Knowing when to put yourself on the line for what you believe in these days can be a precarious task.  Trusting yourself more than you trust your co-worker may be your first line of defense.  Finding your footing when you feel that every misstep may lead you closer to the front door all the while looking over your shoulder determining whom you should trust.

Speaking up for yourself when you feel slighted in the workplace is a gamble. There was a time when being vocal and expressing yourself was considered a true sign of your leadership and personal integrity.

Now you have to weigh the odds even when the top brass encourages you to “speak freely” under promises of providing an “open work environment.”  Not true.  When in doubt you have two choices: 1) Put up or, 2) Shut up.

The workplace is a very strange land these days offering little in the way of comfort, stability and security.  Not knowing which end is up is a common complaint among people who find them selves struggling to keep the job they have and hate, vs. trading it for a new one.

Feeling reluctant at every turn, the only trust you have is to know you have a choice when it comes to putting up with your less than desirable work situation. Many of you have lost faith in corporate America, knowing there is no such thing as “retirement” and that having a “safety net” in the way of a pension plan, retirement plan or any other plan that may take care of you when you need it most is a thing of the past.

You need to look to only one person to take care of yourself and that is you. Sorry to have to deliver the bad news but these days nothing is for certain as companies reinvent themselves or moreover, just struggle to try and survive.  The least of their worries is whether there will be any money left over to fund a retirement plan let alone pay for an annual bonus.

This sad fact really forces you to make two choice: 1) whether it’s time to put up with your current situation or is it time to 2) shut up and stick to what you know. No one wants to put their neck on the line for anything or anyone unless they think it will pay off in the end.

The risk is too high.  When there was once some integrity and nobility about speaking out against the status quo, now there is just fear, intimidation and the threat of losing your job.  That’s not a risk these days that anyone is willing to take-no matter how noble the cause.  It’s not that we are creating a corporate culture of naysayers and mediocrity.

We are creating a fear of freedom of speech which we now categorize as your ability to be “politically astute” when it comes to dealing with complex situations in the workplace.

Let’s face it, it’s just not that much fun working anymore.  But, unfortunately, we are not left with too many alternatives including the choice of retirement. So when the odds are against you what do you do?  It’s not that easy but you have one thing going for you and that is you still have a freedom of choice.

You can choose whether you want to work for a particular company or individual and you can choose under what conditions you will allow yourself to work.  The difference between putting up and shutting up is really a timing thing.  Knowing when to assert yourself and realizing when it’s really a good idea to just sit it out, is a precision decision and nothing more.

Making the choice to put up with a situation that is anything than desirable means you are biding your time until the right opportunity comes along to, 1) either assert your point of view, or 2) quit.  Knowing when to shut up is no different.  There is a time and place for everything as someone, (I have no idea who) once said and this is a perfect time to know when to use it.

Ok, now that you are thoroughly depressed here’s the good news.  You are not a quitter or have not sold yourself short by any stretch.  You are a survivor and when the tide is rolling in and out your ability to survive depends on how well you can do one thing-float.

It’s easy to give up and to give in- quitting is just one option you have any time you want to exert that choice.  But there is a certain discipline, elegance and dignity in knowing when to listen, nod and just keep yourself focused knowing that you don’t need to put up with an undesirable situation for too long.

Learning when to shut up is really an art form.  It takes a great deal of patience, composure and above all discipline to know when the battle is not worth fighting and you are best served by remaining silent.  Don’t take this as a sign of weakness or giving in. Having the good sense to know when it’s your turn to speak up or speak out is something only you can teach yourself.

So next time you feel the need to “tell it like it is,” just remember, is it really worth it and is there a better way?  At times like these you don’t always have to fight the tide-sometimes it is better to float.

Questions from our Readers
Answered by
Lisa Kaye

What should be mentioned when writing a reference letter?

If you’ve been requested to write a reference letter on behalf of someone it’s always good to stick to the facts which include, date, title and specific job responsibilities.  Because of all the legalities surrounding “negligent hiring” you’ve got to be factual yet careful in just how much information you disclose.

Sometimes, it’s good to request a written reference form from the company so you are only responding to questions that may be relevant to the job your former employee is applying to.  Disclosing too much about the individual’s character and worth ethic could get you in trouble if there was something in the employment past you were unaware of and could potentially be harmful to the prospective employer if you did not disclose it.

Gone are the good old days when writing a glowing letter of recommendation was a standard practice in offering your unbiased opinion of someone’s value to a new organization.  You could be held liable if your recommendation in any way led the employer to hire someone based on your feedback and that person had a checkered past even if unbeknownst to you.  I’m not saying don’t write a recommendation for one of your employees if asked, but be careful about how much or little you choose to disclose and request perhaps that you are listed as a reference instead so that someone can phone you to discuss the applicant rather than memorializing it on paper.

Most employers prefer to speak with someone rather than accept a blanket reference letter anyway, so it’s like better for all concerned to phone this one in rather than to put too much in writing lest it backfire on you.  In this case less is more but always remember to be factual.

How does one become a consultant, and what is the most efficient way of letting people know of your expertise? The term “consultant” use to be code for “unemployed” or “in-transition.”  Now with unemployment still at an all time high, more and more senior level executives are finding consulting a desired and often times lucrative career choice.

To become a consultant you have to have an expertise in a particular area that sets you apart from the rest.  Consultants typically will have in excess of 15 years work experience and would have worked for many companies both public and private and will possess a proven track record in delivering results within a specific period of time.

Most consultants create a website and have a bio, much like a press release, outlining the companies they’ve provided  services to and the types of quantitative results they have delivered. Building your LinkedIn profile with SEO friendly terms will also help drive visibility and networking your expertise to the industry

you are serving.  Whether you are a marketing, programming or business executive you can promote your expertise by serving on boards and in speaking on panels in order to promote and advertise your expertise and availability for hire.. The term consultant does not hold the negative connotation it once did and more and more experienced executives are opting for roles which allow them to use their expertise directly and to develop a list of competitive clients that only serves to make them more marketable.

Being a consultant does not mean you are unemployed and can’t find work.  Choosing to be a consultant allows you to be more flexible in your work assignments, pick and choose the people you would like to work for and gives you the freedom to work at the rate you feel you deserve.  Being a consultant is good work if you can get it!

Do HR people believe that a good sales person can sell anything?  Or will the hiring professionals just employ people who have sold items related to their industry?

In my experience, depending on the level of sales position you are applying for, hiring professionals will usually require direct sales experience related to the industry.  If you have general sales experience and are applying for an entry level position, most companies would be willing to pay to train you on the products and services the company is offering.

Generally and if the company is seeking to hire more experienced sales people, they will want the prospective candidates to have direct industry related experience. It’s not that a good sales person can’t sell anything.  I believe that sales is such a relationship driven business and is based on the quality and quantity of your relationships, that’s it essential to develop a good client base in order to succeed in the position.

Developing your relationships whether they are clients or prospects can help you leverage your ability to move up and over to more challenging sales opportunities if you are in the market.
