Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 3, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

Peter Pan swoops by to get Jake and the Never Land Pirates to help him find his lost shadow in his first appearance on Disney Junior‘s preschool series on an hour-long primetime special, Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Peter Pan Returns, which will premiere Monday, February 13 at 7p on Disney Channel.  The special features six original songs and Adam Wylie (Picket Fences) as the voice of Peter Pan.  Beginning Monday, February 6, www.disneynunior.com/peterpan will feature Jake’s Countdown to Peter Pan and introduce a new two-part game, Shadow Shenanigans, where players can take on the role of Peter Pan’s shadow and then play a matching game.  A full-length preview of Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Peter Pan Returns will be available via Disney Channel on Demand on February 6.  Mobile providers Sprint TV and MobiTV will simulcast the special in conjunction with the TV premiere on February 13.  The special will then be available the following day on mobile VOD for AT&T, Sprint and Verizon customers.  Season two of Jake and the Never Land Pirates will debut Monday, February 20 with new episodes airing daily at 8:30a.

LICENSING

American Greetings Properties (AGP), the intellectual property and outbound licensing division of American Greetings Corporation and international licensing agent Exim Licensing Group inks a roster of deals for Holly Hobbie in Latin America, including the first regional publishing deal for the brand in the region. Additional licensing deals expand on an existing program in the region with stationery, books, infant apparel, bags, and accessories for both the Holly Hobbie classic and Holly Hobbie and Friends brands.

  • Under a new deal, V & R Editoras will publish Holly Hobbie inspirational books and agendas for teens and adults. The line will launch for the holidays and the first quarter 2012 and will be available in Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia, Paraguay, Mexico, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Venezuela, and the Caribbean.
  • Other licensing deals include, Kalunga signing on for stationery, Ciranda Cultural for publishing and G Baby Industria for infant apparel in Brazil.
  • Importadora & Exportadora Rosen (bags and accessories) and Lanetex (apparel) have been appointed in multi-territory deals that include the Caribbean, Central and South America

MARKETING

Lionsgate and Universal Republic Records unveil some of the artists that will appear on the companion album to The Hunger Games movie.  Produced by acclaimed producer/songwriter/performer T Bone Burnett, the album will feature newly written and recorded songs and artists including Taylor Swift and The Civil Wars, Arcade Fire, and The Decemberists, among others.  The album will drop ahead of the movie, which releases in theaters March 23, 2012.  The album’s first single, Safe & Sound, a collaboration between Taylor Swift and the Civil Wars and Burnett, debuted on iTunes on December 23, 2011 and was atop the iTunes songs chart and pop chart within 12-hours.  The single is available for purchase at: www.smarturl.it/hungergames.  Meanwhile, Win Butler and Regine Chassagne of Arcade Fire have written a song with Burnett entitled Horn Of Plenty, and the band The Decemberists have contributed an original song, One Engine, both of which will appear on the upcoming album.

MORE KIDS STUFF

CBeebies, the BBC’s preschool channel for US Hispanic and Latin America, celebrates the arrival of the Three Kings (Feast of the Epiphany) with special programming including select episodes of the series Vamos a Celebrar!, airing daily now through January 6, 2012 from 12-12:30p and 4-4:30p.  During the programming event, Especial: Dia de los Reyes Magos will take kid viewers around the world to learn about various traditional celebrations in different communities, with episodes focusing on holidays such as Nowruz, a Zoroastrian festival that commemorates the new year according to the Persian calendar, Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, and preparations for the Chinese New Year, and the Jewish holiday of Purim.

HarperCollins Publishers, Weta and Moulinsart have released The Art of the Adventures of Tintin, a new iPad app that takes viewers into the 3D animated world of the new Paramount and Columbia feature film The Adventures of Tintin filmmakers, directed/produced by Steven Spielberg, and produced by Peter Jackson and Kathleen Kennedy. The app ($6) includes the entire text of the original book The Adventures of Tintin by Herge, on which the movie is based, as well as visual, audio and video enhancements. The App features 360/degree immersive environments and turnaround characters, video clips and exclusive new content, all integrated into the story of how this unique movie was created. New Zealand-based Weta (The Lord of the Rings, King Kong and Avatar) created the animation, visual effects and conceptual design for the Tintin movie. The app was created by Weta and HarperCollins with New York-based developers Holopad using many assets produced by the same Weta artists who brought Herge’s Tintin characters to the big screen.  Based on content from the book, The Art of the Adventures of Tintin by Chris Guise, the app allows readers to delve deeper into Tintin’s story and explore and interact with various features.  Moulinsart, the official organization oversees the world of Tintin, has contributed an introductory chapter on the comic’s creator Georges Remi (aka Herge), and has provided video clips and original artwork for reproduction in the app.  The app will also be available in French beginning January 10, which marks the anniversary of the first appearance of Tintin (January 10, 1929).
