Cynopsis: Classified Advantage

Good morning.  It’s Tuesday, January 22, 2013, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

You Asked What?

The company you applied to has asked you to come in for an interview.  They loved your resume and cover letter, and now they want to talk.

Here are some questions you shouldn’t even think about during a job interview.

How much vacation do I get?
Once you receive an offer, benefits and vacations will be discussed, there is no reason to bring it up, at all.

How much does this job pay?
Again, once they tender you an offer, this will be discussed.  Any mentioning of it beforehand and you will instantly be eliminated from the process.

Any question you don’t have a pretty good idea what the answer will be.
Why?  What if the interviewer asks you a follow up question?  You have to be able give a reasonable reply or you’re out.

How long before I can be considered for a promotion?
Really?  Get the job first, then start worrying about promotions, quietly.

Do I get my own office?
Again, there will be a time and place for this question, your job interview is neither.

Will you have access to my email?
This question put all sorts of ideas into the interviewer’s head, none of which is good for you.

Will you be monitoring my social media sites?
Again, why ask this question?  If you are looking for a job, assume that any employer interested in you has already checked Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter among others, for your accounts.  They should always be professional.

All these questions have one thing in common, they are about you and not the company or the job.  There will be plenty of time to figure all this stuff out… later.  Right now just concentrate on what’s good for the company and get that job.

We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at john@cynopsis.com.

Use LinkedIn to Get a Job
Joel Garfinkle

With more than 35 million members, mostly professional adults, LinkedIn is revolutionizing the job search process. With a wide variety of users, including executives from every Fortune 500 company, you can now connect to people you never knew you were remotely connected to! The old saying, “It’s not what you know; it’s who you know.” comes into the 21st century with this leading professional social networking site. Now, job seekers all over are leveraging their LinkedIn contacts to help with their job search. Following are tips on how to use LinkedIn to get a job:

Create a profile. You can’t see who you’re connected to without a profile. Make sure your profile is as professional as possible. Include information about your past employment and your skills. Think of your profile as an online resume that the public will be able to see.

Make the connections. Once you have a profile active, use your e-mail contact list to find people you know who are already on LinkedIn. Once you’ve connected with people, LinkedIn will continue to recommend people you may know, based on the connections they have in common with you. The more people you connect to, the greater your chances that you’ll have a way to connect to someone within a company with a job posting you are interested in.

Review the job postings on LinkedIn. Many companies know the power of LinkedIn and are posting their open positions on the website. Review the company to see if you know anyone that works there or if anyone you know knows someone who works there that can introduce you to that person. This inside connection can give you a valuable leg up in the job search process.

Let your connections know you’re on the market. Tell everyone you’re connected to on LinkedIn that you’re looking for a new position, and the type of position you’re looking for. With LinkedIn’s fairly recent addition of the “status update” this is a pretty simple process. Ask your connections to let you know if they know of a position that might be interesting to you.

Look for companies that may be interested in your skill set. Using LinkedIn’s advanced search, search for people who have skills similar to yours, using keywords of those skills. See which companies they’re working for and then explore their open positions. If they don’t have a position open currently, you can still try to connect with hiring managers, through your connections, and send them your resume. Sometimes a company will hire a good person, with a valuable skill set, even if they don’t have a specific opening at the time.

You can also order Joel’s book Land Your Dream Job which guides you through a proven, seven-step action-oriented process that helps you to define and land work that matches your natural gifts and passions.

Questions from our Readers
Answered by
Joel Garfinkle

What types of job interviews exist and how do I know what kind of interview will be conducted?

There are several different types of job interviews, primarily divided into two categories  phone and in-person interviews. A phone interview is often conducted to see if your skills and experience warrant bringing you in for an in-person interview.

The in-person interview can be conducted in a variety of forms. Most often, they are one-on-one, informational interviews. In this type of interview, questions are posed to determine your skills and experience, as well as get a feel for the qualitative aspects, such as your personality and communication skills. Panel interviews may also be conducted, where you meet with multiple people during the interview, either all at once or one after the other.

To determine which interview you’ll experience, ask the hiring manager or human resources person who you’ll be meeting with, when they set up the interview. This will also give you the opportunity to do some research on the people who’ll be conducting the interview.

When is the best time for job-seekers to bring up salary in a job interview?

Rarely should a job seeker be the first to bring up salary in a job interview. Salary should only be part of the consideration when evaluating a new position. By asking about salary, you may give the impression that money is the most important thing to you. Instead, it should be about opportunity and finding the right position and company that will allow you to develop your career.

That being said, before you go into the interview, you should have an idea of what an appropriate salary range is. Look at the job posting. Oftentimes employers do include salary range in their postings. Use online salary estimator tools to get an idea of what to expect as well.

Joel Garfinkle’s proven 10-Step Salary Negotiation Program teaches salary negotiation strategies to help you get the pay, benefits and perks that you deserve. See why hundreds of clients have benefitted from Joel’s program. If you are asking for a raise or negotiating a higher salary, order Get Paid What You’re Worth.
