Cynopsis: Kids!
01/11/11

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 11, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Disney Channel selects Valentine’s Day, Monday, February 14, 2011, as the launch date for Disney Junior, the network’s newly re-branded preschool block (currently known as Playhouse Disney).  The Disney Junior programming block will be available on Disney Channel in the US weekdays (4a-2p) and weekends (4-9a).  The Disney Junior block kicks off February 14 at 6:50a with a play of the movie Finding Nemo, which will be followed by the new animated series Jake and the Never Land Pirates.  The preschool block will also introduce five other new series, including the short-form programs Mousekersize, Special Agent Oso: Three Healthy Steps, and A Poem Is… (narrated by Jennifer Garner, Katie Holms and other celebrities), and long-form series Babar and the Adventures of Badou and Ting Tinga Tales.  The Disney Junior re-brand will also debut on 25 Disney Junior channels (also currently known as Playhouse Disney channels) and free-to-air broadcast partners around the world.  In 2012 Disney Junior will launch as a 24-hour basic cable and satellite channel in the US.  Disney’s current preschool series will also be seen on Disney Junior.  Disney Junior will also be supported by a new website and content on Disney Channel on Demand (SVOD):

  • DisneyJunior.com (www.disneyjunior.com ), which debuts simultaneously to the block, will feature storybooks narrated by Disney characters, activities that encourage creativity, 150+ full-length episodes of series including Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Handy Manny, Special Agent Oso, and Imagination Movers, and a range of games.  The site will also launch a Jake and the Never Land Pirates supersite, offering adventure-themed games such as Jake’s Treasure Hunt and Izzy’s Flying Adventure, as well as a parent/caregivers-targeted section with party tips, recipes, crafts, and how-to videos.
  • Beginning Monday, February 7, a full-length preview of Jake and the Never Land Pirates will be available on Disney Channel on Demand (SVOD) and an 11-minute preview episode will be available on DisneyJunior.com, Disney Channel on Demand (free VOD), Disney Channel mobile VOD providers and iTunes.  As of the February 14 TV premiere, the series will be simulcast on Disney Channel’s mobile providers Sprint TV, FloTV and MobiTV. New episodes will be available on DisneyJunior.com, Disney Channel on Demand, Disney Channel mobile VOD and simulcast providers, as well as iTunes and Xbox.

In other Nickelodeon series news, George Takei joins the cast of the net’s new live-action comedy Supah Ninjas (26×30), which gets a special preview next Monday, January 17 at 9p, following new episodes of Victorious.  In the series Takei plays the holographic grandfather and supervisor of Mike Fukanaga, an awkward high schooler who discovers he is a descendant of a long line of ninjas.  Mike and two of his pals team up to become the Supah Ninjas, a secret team of crime fighters that also have to get their homework done.  Takei is, of course, best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu on Star Trek.  He has also been featured on Heroes, and lent his voice to characters in Mulan, The Simpsons, Scooby-Do and the Samurai Sword, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Smurfs and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, as well as narrating the PBS series The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.  Supah Ninjas was created by Eric Garcia and Leo Chu (Afro Samurai, Afro Samurai: Resurrection) and is executive produced by Garcia, Chu, Mitchel Katlin and Nat Bernstein, Brian Robbins and Sharla Sumpter-Bridgett under the Varsity Pictures production banner.

Disney Channel will premiere its new original movie Lemonade Mouth on Friday, March 25 at 8p.  Based on the young adult book of the same name by Mark Peter Hughes, Lemonade Mouth is a music-driven TV movie that revolves around five average music-loving teens meet and form a successful band.  Lemonade Mouth stars Bridgit Mendler (Good Luck Charlie), Adam Hicks (Zeke and Luther), Hayley Kiyoko (Wizards of Waverly Place) Naomi Scott (Life Bites), as well as Blake Michael, Nick Roux (Suite Life on Deck), Chris Brochu (Soul Surfer), Tisha Campbell-Martin (My Wife and Kids) and Christopher McDonald (Boardwalk Empire).  The movie’s soundtrack, which includes original songs, will be available Tuesday, March 22 on iTunes and in stores nationwide. The soundtrack features three songs written and preformed by Hicks.  Lemonade Mouth is directed by Patricia Riggen (La Misma Luna) from a script by April Blair, and executive produced by Debra Martin Chase (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Cheetah Girls movies), co-produced by Gaylyn Fraiche (Just Wright, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2) and choreographed by Chris Scott.  A production of GWAVE Productions, Lemonade Mouth was filmed on location in New Mexico.

MTV Networks International inks further TV deals for Nickelodeon‘s live-action series iCarly around the world.  Picking up episodes of iCarly are Network 10 (Australia), and season two of the series are Vrak (youth-targeted Canadian French-language cable channel) and NRK (Norway), while City TV (Colombia) picks takes episodes 1-52, and Monte Carlo TV (Uruguay) acquires season 1.  Also in Latin America, Medcom (Panama) renews the first season of iCarly and picks up season 2 episodes, while TeleNica (Nicaragua) acquires new episodes from season 2.

ABC Commercial has sold the CG animated preschool series the WotWots (52×10) to South Korea’s C4U Entertainment to air in Korean on its Kids Channel, Kids 1 from March 2011.  The series is already available in the market with Korean Distribution Company, Kenny & Co, which placed it on Kids Talk Talk and JEI TV, with the latter set to dub each episode in Korean.  The WotWots is produced by Pukeko Pictures and made at Richard Taylor’s Weta Workshop.
