Disney Channel Worldwide unveiled a launch date for its Disney Junior channel in the US, as well as a new series, Lab Rats, and Marvel Universe programming block for its Disney XD channel yesterday at the Television Critics Association Press Tour yesterday.
- Disney Channel announced Disney Junior (disneyjuniorthechannel.com), its 24-hr preschool/parents/caregivers targeted basic cable and satellite channel, will launch in the US on Friday, March 23 at 12 midnight, at the Television Critics Association Press Tour yesterday. Disney Junior, which has been running as a daily programming block on Disney Channel US since February 2010, joins the 208 other Disney Junior channels around the world. The Disney Junior block will continue to run daily on Disney Channel. The Disney Junior channel programming lineup will feature daily telecasts of Jake and the Never Land Pirates, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and new programs including the animated series Doc McStuffins at launch. The new channel will also feature new editions of the short-form series A Poem Is… and a weekend movie block, Magical World of Disney Junior. Additionally, new interstitials featuring Disney characters, including Sebastian and Flounder from The Little Mermaid, Mrs. Potts and Chip from Beauty and the Beast, and pups Lucky and Pepper 101 Dalmatians, will also debut.
- Lab Rats will debut with a special 1-hour episode on February 27 at 8:30p, as part of the channel’s Monday Mayhem comedy block. To support of debut of Lab Rats: DisneyXD.com will feature a Lab Rats page, with a new game titled Bionic Heroics, beginning Friday, January 20, followed by another new game on February 27; a preview episode of the series will be available from Friday, February 17, on Disney XD on Demand; along with free download on iTunes and Sony Playstation; Friday-Sunday, February 24-26, series stars will host the evening lineup on Disney Channel and offer a Lab Rats VIP Preview of the series; directly following the premiere on air, the series premiere episode will be available on DisneyXD.com; as of February 28, Lab Rats series premiere will be available on Disney XD Mobile VOD.
- Disney XD will also launch Marvel Universe, a dedicated Marvel programming block, with the new series Ultimate Spider-Man, on Sunday, April 1, 2012. Marvel Universe on Disney XD is designed to be the place for fans to find exclusive Marvel content, including new animated short-form series, live-action interstitials and the series return of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Produced by Marvel Animation, the Ultimate Spider-Man series creative team includes Joe Quesada (Marvel’s CCO), Paul Dini (Batman: The Animated Series, Lost), the great team of Man of Action Studios (creators of Ben 10 and Generator Rex), and Brian Michael Bendis (Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man comic series).

Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) appoints Elastic Rights Hellas to act as its licensing representatives in Greece and Cyprus. Under the deal, Elastic Rights Hellas will license classic properties including Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, Scooby-Doo, and ThunderCats; DC Entertainment properties: Batman, Superman and Green Lantern; as well as new theatrical releases such as the two upcoming Peter Jackson directed feature films, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again.
ZeptoLab, game developers of the game Cut the Rope and its pint-sized monster Om Nom, grants US-based Established Brands Licensing and Canada’s Studio Licensing the exclusive North American Agency Rights. A licensing program is underway for Cut the Rope across a wide array of categories including toys, games/activities, apparel, accessories, confectionery, home decor and stationery. A limited merchandise release is set for spring 2012, followed by a broader rollout in fall 2012.
Okay Hunger Games fans (so, that might include me) – get ready. Lionsgate announces that ticket for The Hunger Games feature film will go on advance sale on Wednesday, February 22, 2012. The Hunger Games opens on March 23, 2012. Shaftesbury (Life with Derek) and its digital media division, Smokebomb Entertainment, is set to launch Totally Amp’d this month. Touted as the first original mobile app series for kids and tweens, Totally Amp’s will debut at the Apple App Store in the US and Canada on Thursday, January 26 ($4.99). Targeted to kids/tweens 8-14, Totally Amp’d is a live-action music comedy series that is comprised of 10 “appisodes” and tells the story of five talented teens who are brought together to become the next big pop group. The app series stars Ashley Leggat (Life with Derek) and Cristine Prosperi (Degrassi: The Next Generation), and features an original soundtrack and interactive activities. New broadcast deals for Little Airplane Productions‘ short-form, animated series Small Potatoes. Picking up the preschool series are Thai PBS (Thailand), HOP! Channel (Israel and Turkey) and RUV (Iceland). Created by Little Airplane’s Founder/President Josh Selig, Small Potatoes first premiered on CBeebies last year, and can now also be seen on Disney Junior (US on Disney Channel), ABC (Australia), and TVO and Knowledge (both in Canada).
Parents, a monthly magazine published by Meredith Corporation, unveils a new look and approach with its February 2012 issue out this week. Turner Broadcasting reorganizes its ad sales division as it aims to better integrate of its sales business units, per David Levy, President/Sales, Distribution and Sports, TBS. The new structure sees Donna Speciale, formerly a media buyer with MediaVest USA, appointed as President/Turner Entertainment & Animation Ad Sales and longtime Turner executive Greg D’Alba named to the newly created position of President/News and Turner Digital Ad Sales.
- Specifically looking at the kid focused aspects of this reorganization. Speciale will be responsible for the ad sales team for Turner’s kids and youth networks, including Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, TBS, TNT, and TruTV. Additionally, she will co-lead Cartoon Network Enterprises, which includes consumer products, licensing, home video/DVD and retail development, with Stu Snyder, President and COO, Turner’s Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media (AYAKM) division.

Canadian-based CCI Entertainment (Cambium Catalyst International) appoints Rekha Shah as VP/Distribution and Co-Production. Shah will be managing CCI Releasing’s international library and executive sales team. In addition to her role within CCI Releasing, Shah will work closely with Co-Chairmen, Charles Falzon and Arnie Zipursky on the packaging of original content. CCI is expanding its international library and development slate, including new kid’s properties, feature films, TV movies, primetime drama, and lifestyle/factual properties.
ZeptoLab expands its licensing and merchandising initiatives by appointing Tanya Haider as Head of Licensing and Merchandising. Haider is charged with helping to make the Cut the Rope game and its character Om Nom a household name.
