Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 22, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

UK-based Mind Candy‘s CEO Michael Acton Smith, the company/creator behind the kid-targeted virtual world Moshi Monsters ( www.moshimonsters.com  ), unveils plans to launch a new viewing platform, Moshi TV.  Currently in development, Moshi TV will combine elements of user generated content, in-house production and animated content from partners.  The platform will, of course, also draw on the social aspects of the Moshi Monsters website, which allows kids to rate content, talk about it with friends and vote for what they want to see.  Moshi Monsters boasts 35 million registered users and 7+ million monthly unique visitors.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Paramount will now distribute Martin Scorsese‘s movie Hugo Cabret, a 3D adaptation of Brian Selznick’s book The Invention of Hugo Cabret.  Now slated for release Thanksgiving Week on November 23, 2011, the mystery stars Asa Butterfield, Chloe Moretz, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Sir Ben Kingsley, Jude Law, and Emily Mortimer.  Directed by Scorsese from a screenplay by John Logan (Gladiator, The Aviator, Hugo Cabret is produced by Scorsese, Graham King, Tim Headington and Johnny Depp, and is financed by GK Films.  Paramount will handle worldwide distribution of the movie excluding the UK, France, Italy, Switzerland, Turkey and the Middle East.  Prior to this the movie had been set up with Sony Pictures for distribution.

MORE KIDS STUFF

DisneyToon Studios is working on Planes, a full-length CG animated direct to Blu-ray/DVD title set in the sky and inspired by Disney/Pixar’s Cars.  Slated for release in spring 2013, Planes is a comedy that will feature a new group of flying characters from around the world.  The Planes storyline revolves around Dusty, who dreams of entering the around-the-world air race, even though he is scared of heights.

Beyond Distribution acquires the international sales rights to Dick ‘n Dom Go Wild! (20×30), a new series from UK-based True North Productions.  Featuring the popular duo, Dick ‘n Dom Go Wild takes viewers behind the scenes at some of the UK’s busiest vets, wildlife hospitals and animal sanctuaries. Dick and Dom team up with kids, some who love and respect animals and some who need some convincing, as they volunteer to get their hands (and feet and everything else) dirty as they work to help animals in need.  The series will debut at MIP this spring.

VIZ Media acquires the US rights for the CGI animated series My Giant Friend, which it will shop to potential US TV partners.  A co-production between SAMG Animation and Timoon Animation, My Giant Friend is targeted to Boys 7-12 and revolves around Linus (12) and his best friend, a giant alien named Boom, as they help lost aliens return to their home planets.  The series can currently be seen on TV in France, Korea, Italy, Norway, Czech Republic, Turkey, and Spain, among others.

Production has begun on season two of Disney XD‘s live-action series Pair of Kings, which stars Mitchel Musso and Doc Shaw.  Produced by It’s A Laugh Productions, the new season of Pair of Kings will debut on the channel later this year.  On the heels of the successful Pair of Kings online game based, Wild Island Rampage, DisneyXD.com will introduce four new themed games based on the series throughout the year beginning with Super Surf Scramble ( www.disneyxd.com/kings  ), which is available now.

HIT Entertainment heads into pre-production on a new season of the CG animated Fireman Sam series. The new season, its eighth, is comprised of 26×10 episodes and will deliver in spring 2012.  China-based digital animation company Xing Xing, which collaborated on seasons six and seven of Fireman Sam, is producing the new season of the series.

Nickelodeon‘s music group Big Time Rush, stars of the series of the same name, will perform this newest single, Boyfriend, live at Nickelodeon’s 2011 Kids’ Choice Awards on Saturday, April 2, at 8p.  Last night the network premiered a Big Time Rush hour-long special, Big Time Beach Party, which starred comedian/actor Russell Brand.  Big Time Rush is a co-production with Sony Music.

The animated series Gasp! (52×11) joins the lineup of Nine Network (Australia) this Saturday, February 26 at 11:30a.  Gasp! will run on Nine Network February 26-April 23 2011 at 11:30a, and then shift to air from April 30-June 25 at 12:30p.  Targeted to K6-12, the series is based on the popular Gasp!, Zapt!, Splat!, Squish!, Crash!, Chomp! comic book series by Australian author/illustrator Terry Denton.  Produced by SLR Productions, the series already airs on Canal+ in France and Nickelodeon New Zealand.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Lisle International Licensing, the master licensing agent for Cepia and ZhuZhu Pets, names Character Licensing & Marketing (CLM) as the sub licensing agent for South Africa.  CLM is seeking licensing deals for ZhuZhu Pets across a range of categories in South Africa.

In other Moshi Monsters news, Mind Candy launches the monthly Moshi Monsters Magazine, in association with SkyJack Publishing, in the UK this month and will then roll out around the world in key territories in Q1 2011.  The new magazine (52 pages) features Moshi content such as comic strips, competitions, gifts, puzzles, secret hints and tips, character fact files, and user generated content.

Italian publisher Giochi Preziosi Group appoints Arnoldo Mondadori Editore as a new Puppy in My Pocket Adventures in Pocketville publishing licensee to produce licensed narrative and play books also for Italy.  The first titles will be published this spring, beginning next month with a novelization of the TV series, in a series of mini-books, Stick and stack albums and interactive coloring books.  The Puppy in My Pocket Adventures in Pocketville TV series is a co-production of MEG, which created the original Puppy in my Pocket toy property, Giochi Preziosi and Mondo TV.
